Hey Eric, great review! I have this bag, and it’s by far, the best crossbody/sling I own (and I have a lot, LOL)! There are a few things I think you forgot to mention in your review that I think are worth noting:
    1. There IS a pen pocket, but it’s located on the left side wall of the main compartment. The slip pocket to the right of the keychain is actually a great place to put a small flashlight, multi tool, or other EDC gear.
    2. The materials they used plus the positioning of the hypalon wings not only allows the bag to stay close to your body, but also prevent a ton of flapping around if you have to move suddenly.
    3. A standard 500ml water bottle that you’d get at a store actually fits in the main compartment (as long as you don’t pack it out)!
This bag might not be great for everyone , but it’s darn near perfect for me!

I have this and it grew on me a lot! I love the design of it. I only dislike 3 things about the Ember Kompaq -- but you learn to accept it. First it gets dusty pretty quick. So you need a lint remover. Second the clasps on the sides are very hard to take out. But the workaround is to just attach a small carabiner like a Nite Ize on both of the clasps. Third I wish it held just a 'little' more. But it's fine. These make an amazing dop kit, toiletry kit or if you're feeling fancy an amazing EDC toolkit which imo looks a million times better than the fugly ones (ie Maxpedition).

The clamshell design is an awesome idea for a sling!

I do like the look of this one. I prefer a vertical sling like this. Thanks Eric and team

Ooh, a clamshell crossbody! I really want something like this for an art kit type thing, though I might modify some of the "lid side" pockets to be more pen friendly so they're kept in place better. An iPad Mini is pretty much exactly A5 sized so an A5 sketchbook should fit pretty great in the back pocket, too.

Nice and thorough review. Just received mine and I love it. All the remarks are on point. In classic Black ember fashion, the bag is quite rigid, especially the front flap. Curious to see how that will wear in.
    Thanks for the review!

Just preordered on. I wonder the front magnetic flip side if u can tuck it in and fit a slim full size keyboard with 10 key so that it sticks out for those in-a-pinch situations where u may prefer to bring a keyboard too. Thoughts?

I overall like the Kompak, the only thing I did change was the straps as I did not like them.

Ipad mini fits in back pocket, BUT ONLY if not using a case. These days ipad cases are essential / basic protection, so one would expect to have it on the device at all times. This bag does not allow that. To me this is a dealbreaker. Other comments I have is that the material, while very durable, is a dust magnet. Regarding the access to the "black side" of the bag, I'm still struggling to get accustomed to it. So far it's a humbug to get to stuff stored in there. So I ended up not using the bag as much as I would, despite it is very comfortable to wear.

The bag has a dedicated pen holder and that wasn't it. It is in the very middle, right side of the hinge

Do you have any recommendations for a replacement strap to replace the original strap. I like the clamshell design and front pocket but not so much on the strap.

this might be a year too late, but i hated my black ember kompak strap too. It was too long for a short person like me and I am unable to adjust it any shorter because of the permanent pad stitched to the strap making the bag sits really low below my hip. I switched mine with an alpaka strap & now I am able to adjust it according to my preferable length. It might not be as comfortable as the original BE strap due to the lack of padding but I am ok with that, I just make sure that I dont overpack my bag.

I’ve had mine since September, the shoulder pad will eventually break in.

I was worried about this. Though I just got mine, and I found that massaging the strap or twisting it frequently allowed it to soften up significantly making a huge difference. The strap looks great already!@@PackHacker2
