  • In this video from the Know More Risk series, learn about the arrangement, operation and alarm testing of a wet sprinkler system that uses an alarm check valve and water flow pressure switch. This is one of two typical riser configurations for wet systems.

    Notify the alarm company first so as to not send any type of accidental signal. Get operator number to verify call,

    What about sensing lines of fire pumps and its positioning with respect to ACV, is it connected upstream or downstream from the ACV? and what about the jocky pump operation, is ACV open each time of jockey pump operation?

    Question : if the system pipes above the.Riser and check valve all the way to the sprinkler branch lines and heads are full of water why is it that the water is going from below the wet check valve / through intermediate chamber and out the ITV or pressure switch ?

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I could see the unit but if water is making it to the pressure switch it indicates that although all appears set ,the clapper is not sitting properly and the intermediate is taking in water.basically a false alarm.

      A regular check valve only stops water from flowing back to where it is fed from. But since you mentioned an intermediate then I'm thinking you are talking about an Alarm Valve ,which is basically a check valve with gauge , drain and alarm ports as well as a test valve for alarms and a bypass which allows water to flow into above clapper without lifting it to cause false alarms. These days a lot of systems are straight pipe as well with a water flow switch eliminating the Alarm Valve.

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the system fills with water the clapper kind of waggles a little bit ,equalizes ,then sits flat. If she doesn't sit completely flat with the pressure equalized on top and bottom, it's because there could be a pebble ,or obstruction on the seat, then the water will still swallow in through the intermediate and trigger the Alarm Pressure Switch or Water Motor Gong. Sometimes small leaks come from a bad rubber gasket or soiled seat.This type of tiny seepage can cause a false alarm that builds up over time, maybe a few days or a week,, the build up of water pushes the pressure switch alarm .The seat can be cleaned with a little emory cloth or the gasket may need to be replaced. A quick trick is to open up the drain all the way allowing the water to flush through Alarm Valve chamber and knock out whatever could be obstructed , then closing the drain the system will equalized again and the clapper has another chance to reset itself flat . Don't tell anyone, just kidding.

    why must the pressure gauges show same reading?

    • @fitter5426
      @fitter5426 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pressure gauges don't need to be the same. Alarm checks and riser checks are nice because you don't have to drain the entire system to work on something before the system riser. The purpose of an alarm check is the operate the system without a flow switch. Most alarm check especially older ones have a retarded chamber on them that allows a flow of water during a pressure surge so the pressure switch don't operate. That system this guy has in the video the pressure switch would trip every time there was a pressure surge cause there's no allowance from a retarded chamber. And when there is a pressure surge that alarm check locks the pressure surge in above the clapper. So more often than not the gauge above will be higher than the one below.

      @caldershot9702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fitter542 nfpa requires 50psi above city or 125 psi whichever is greater. This is clearly American though. No retard chambers used in Canada for the most part. Excess pressure pumps are used.

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pressure on wet systems can show higher readings above clapper because when at night water pressure rises with less neighborhood use ,water pressure goes from below clapper to above clapper through Alarm Valve bypass and stay locked in above. I believe some older models allows water to go from top to bottom through an intermediate bypass(small hole from below to above and vice-versa ) as to not lift the clapper causing a false alarm ,this type of bypass keeps readings looking balanced. When they get clogged the can cause false alarms.

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does not always show the same, if you just filled system at that moment and presure doesn't match, one or even both gauges need changing would should be calibrated every five years anyway.

  • @austinhologroski
    @austinhologroski 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why doesn't the alarm get set off everytime system is filled? Water is still going from the intermediate chamber into the flow switch.

    • @caldershot9702
      @caldershot9702 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin Hologroski probably because he closed the ball valve on the alarm line which is, by code, not supposed to be there. That’s the one with the yellow handle he said must be open at the beginning. At 50 seconds...

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it does go off ,its possible the alarm shut off valve is closed or the switch itself could be bad.

    Why is it so loud? We have a sprinkler room where i work and one day i was getting my chemicals and it randomly kicked on and the room is small, and you can hear it thoughout the entire facility, it blasted my ears and I still can't hear right

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's a Dry system the compressor can kick on once in a blue moon to upgrade air pressure that holds back water pressure. If the compressor kicks on every few minutes or less indicates a small leak on air supply line from compressor to system. Sensor line.Yes the compressors are loud and should be braced as to avoid excessive shaking.

    Alarm valves don't have intermediate chambers.

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they do

    • @sambarreto9639
      @sambarreto9639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alarm valves have intermediates because when a head pops and the clapper opens water flows into the intermediate ,then into the alarm line triggering signal
