  • Dr. Roman Muller and his team conducted a clinical trial in which they compared Ketogenic Diet vs Control Diet vs Periodic Fasting in patients with Autosomal-Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease ADPKD. The results were revealed at the Kidney Week Convention of the American Society of Nephrology in Orlando, Florida.

In this video, Dr. Thomas Weimbs, the President of Santa Barbara Nutrients SBN discusses the results of the KETO-ADPKD Clinical Trial with Dr. Roman Muller of the University of Cologne.
    2:00 Dr. Roman Muller Introduction
Introduction of Dr. Roman Muller of the University of Cologne and how he turned his work into a clinical trial for ADPKD.
4:36 Keto ADPKD Clinical Trial explanation
Dr. Muller will tell us what this Clinical Trial actually looked like, how many groups are involved in this clinical trial, whether they were randomized or controlled, and share all the other trial details.
    10:20 Is Ketogenic Diet feasible?
Dr. Muller will explain the feasibility of the Ketogenic Diet. One of the outcomes and key interests in the study was "Is Keto Diet Feasible?"
12:15 How did you look at the feasibility of the Ketogenic Diet in the trial?
15:22 What did you find when you looked at Total Kidney Volume TKV and Kidney Function eGFR?
19:15 Summary & Upcoming Future Trials
The trial was only meant to determine whether Ketogenic Diet or Periodic Fasting is feasible in ADPKD. They were indeed feasible and all the patients were successful in ketosis.
Surprisingly, the study shows that the Ketogenic Diet appeared to give benefit patients even during the short duration of this Clinical Trial. Kidney function (eGFR) and Total Kidney Volume (TKV) appeared to improve in patients on the Ketogenic Diet.
The worst diet appeared to be the Control Diet and the best diet turned out to be the Ketogenic Diet and somewhere in between was Fasting.

Thank you both for this video and outstanding work. I'm already convinced keto works. I've been on a keto diet for about 3 years now and doing better by every measure.

@@garyohare4764 I use KetoCitra, various types of fasting, very low carb (target 50 grams net carbs), and liberal use of quality fats. I eat some meat (natural grass fed) in generally pretty small portions.

That’s awesome Steve! 🎉 I would love to try the KetoCitra as I am a ADPKD recipient. I am 37 and was diagnosed 2 years ago. But it is currently not affordable for me. I want to be on a keto diet and need to reach out to a dietitian. It is my intention to help improve my well being. Thank you so much for this video !

Drs Weimbs and Muller, thank you for this interview, poster and research! Truly fascinating stuff. The statistical significance explanation also matters. As I understand it there is a 9% chance that the decreased kidney volume that you measured in the diet group is down to chance, and a less than 5% chance that increased kidney function is down to chance. Turning this on its head, it seems to me that there is a 91% chance that the first effect is, indeed, caused by the diet, and a 95% chance for the the second, even more important effect. Now the 'statistical significance treshold' is, to an extent, an arbitrary number (though I'm not suggesting we can disregard it). I could imagine that if the study had been carried out with larger numbers of participants and the same graphs of both effects would have come out, the treshold would probably have been cleared. That, of course, is a jump that a scientist is not allowed to make. But I am.... and I do. Good luck with those further trials!

Increased LDL is only a problem if many of the particles are small particles. This will vary with different patients as some are more prone to produce small LDL particles than others.
