Meet Analytical Chemist, Prof Philiswa Nosizo Nomngongo (NSTF-South32 Award Winner) Career Talk

Prof Philiswa Nosizo Nomngongo is an Analytical Chemist at the Dept of Applied Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Prof Nomngongo was raised in the rural village of Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape. As a youngster with a highly curious mind, she used to fetch water from the river as one of her part-time jobs to help pay for her school fees. Her scientific career has been dedicated to environmental analytical chemistry and nanotechnology aimed at solving different environmental problems in the field of water quality and environmental protection.
This video series serves to inspire young minds to follow a career in science, engineering and technology (SET). The NSTF Share ‘n Dare programme provides a platform for NSTF Award winners to act as role models and ambassadors for SET and innovation.
Prof Nomngongo is a '2021 NSTF-South32 Engineering Research Capacity Development Award’ winner for her training, nurturing and mentoring students through her research focused on analytical environmental chemistry of organic and inorganic pollutants in environmental, biological and other matrices.
As a scientist she understands the importance of access to clean water for communities in rural areas. Her research includes the application of various nanomaterials in fields such as wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, water quality monitoring, development of water quality sensors, treatment and recovery of precious metals, among others.
