    I enjoyed your explanations of why you’d use each modifier, particularly your pointing out where you wanted the light to fall.

    Great video Vanessa., The best advice I ever received was to ignore the people that want to criticize my work unless they are my customers. There are tons of armchair photographers and critics out there. But if your customers love your work then who cares what anyone else thinks.

    The way you setup the umbrella/ defuse is genius. I’ve always opened the umbrella first and struggled to get it on 🤯

      I ran and got my umbrella to try that set up. Ive had my umbrella for a year and always have struggle putting it on. If it wasn’t for your comment I’ve would have missed it. Thank you J!

    Impressed how comfortable you are shooting all day with the heavy 28-70 f2.0 lens and a battery grip - that combo is an arm workout for sure!

    Love it! Given the big jump for content creators and competition to afford camera equipment. I was thinking what kinds of flash or strobe should I buy to over power the sun that uses rechargeable batteries? Thanks in advance

      I’m a fan of the Profoto B 10 personally but I hear the Profoto A2 is great as well. All use rechargeable lithium batteries

    AMAZING - such a helpful video Vanessa 🙌🏼 Thanks for sharing! Just to be sure I understand - which umbrella is it you use at 3:27 (which size)? Is with light inside this modifier turning towards the subject or away and being bounced? Would you recommend getting a white material like this for my umbrella (I meant what is the advantage of the white cover)? Thanks a lot in advance ;-)

    Great results, simple mods....used effectively. Bonus: Vanessa mastered vertical grip! Been shooting w/ the same equivalent since the 70's; can't shoot w/o the accessory. For me.....easy/no problems- even w/ a Manfrotto plate/QR. NATURAL for me- and I think required for Portraiture. Bonus: extra juice. I have NEVER run out of power since DSLRs hit the scene, because w/ a grip, you always have (2) batteries per body.. It's the Reviews/Playback that take up the majority of power resources.

    Vanessa what type of c-stand or portable stand do you use with the profoto equipment. There is no link for that particular device under you Gear Links.

    15:07 - Hate to be that person but...
    With mirrorless cameras, if the camera is still turned on when you change lenses, the sensor acts as like an electromagnetic vacuum for charged dust particles to enter and stick to it.
    Something I learned the hard way from using Cinema EOS cameras in the field... and sometimes in actual fields.

    Can someone tell me why using a grid AND e difuser on the beauty dish? Not questioning, just want to learn. Tks!

    • @VanessaJoy
      @VanessaJoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grid directs the light, and while the diffuser helps spread it to reduce skin shine, it doesn’t spread it back out to what it would be without the grid

    And one thing I've always said when people ask me what I do, or what I shoot: I just say "I'm a visual problem solver." Because what you start with NEEDS a solution; you have a "problem" that via concept, lighting, in-camera wizardry, and even more so in post afterwards.....hopefully provides an answer, a fix, a solution that works.

    Why shooting at iso50 instead of 100 or even 200? Surely R5 and 1DX III would be able to handle that without any noticeable noise. Dynamic range wise, using external lighting helps a lot to avoid extremely contrasty scene. I mean B10 is powerful enough but saving 2stops of output gives you faster cycle time and a lot more headroom.

    Question...when you first had the umbrella close, the fill was too bright. My first inclination would be to increase shutter speed. Im always afraid moving the light back might look harsh. thoughts? TY BTW...

    • @natestain7103
      @natestain7103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m guessing HSS would produce a different light effect with faster shutter. Darkening the background too much, causing you to need to up ISO when not ideal.

    The only problem with this video is that the first music track is played back only for ten seconds. How come Vanessa?!! It is the most funky and groovy one. You should have used it as a major one threading through the entire video.
