Thank you Vanessa! On camera flash is tricky as hell and I really welcome each and every video you make, you are a true inspiration for me and I really mean it!
Great, easy video. I love how you used the bounced card and circular bounced tool one handed
Fantastic video! I look forward to trying some of these techniques. I will be searching out more of your videos on this as well.
This was AMAZING Vanessa!!!
A big fan!!
Just starting out with a t2i with a canon 430ex speedlite..archaic I know..but excites me to watch professionals using "normal" equipment I can relate to and not think I will never get thise pics the pros get! Thank you so much for your variety of work!
Hey Vanessa, great video. This is a huge point in photography (Flash). As a Pro i have shot a large number of subjects over a period of about 50 years. When talking to young or older starting out shooters, i push to them the need to learn flash photography. Thanks for the Awesome Video...Jerry M
Thank you so much!
excellent, clear instructions.
Useful tips as always. Thanks!
So happy you think so. If you think of as well like it, do share ☺️ pretty please
Nice job Vanessa! I think it’s great that your using different cameras even the t7 on the last one .
Great video!!!
Awesome.
Thank you Vanessa :)
Love it I once belonged to a camera club that the "mentors" eschewed me for suggesting that a new photographer just use the pop-up flash for some quick fill in an informal portrait outside, with them everything had to be off camera flash, needless to say I quit shortly afterwards.
That was the first flash I'd seen where it didn't have a white card to pull out in the head with the diffuser! I've never thought TTL was a good idea with bounce flash, but I'll have to try it again. Thanks!
On camera flash is something I need LOTS of practice with. Thanks for you tips…. I’m always afraid I’m blinding people when using my flash
My god Vanessa, im in 💕💕💕 love
I shoot with a Profoto A1X on my camera a lot of times and get good results by using the Profoto Soft Bounce accessory. When I need more power than a portable flash can provide, I attach a Profoto B2 to my camera bracket, then attach a Wimberley Plamp II articulating arm to the camera bracket as well, then attach a 12" x 16" white board to the "clip" end of the Plamp. I adjust the Plamp, which can be formed as needed, but solidly, so that it holds the white board angled forward above my camera. I pivot the B2 head back and upward on my camera so that it bounces the light off the white board when I take a photo. It does a great job with providing a nice, soft light on my subjects. This also comes in handy with any light source on your camera when there's nothing else to bounce the light off of.
Great video as usual, very instructive. At 4.00 the ceiling seems a bit too high to bounce though. :-) I love my Godox Speedlight round head. the battery lasts a lot longer than the AA's in my Canon Speedlights.
good tips mem
1st time watcher & now subscriber. Great job Vanessa. I definitely picked up some good tips. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for subbing! Appreciate you!! Hope you find some more tips here ☺️
Vannesa check flash bracket for vertical shoot. you will go to next level.
Totally unrelated to the subject of the video, but could you share what your background and lighting is for your videos? Love the blue. Is it seamless paper? White with blue gels or just blue and lit with daylight balanced light? Looks great. And thanks for the on-camera tips.

Great tut Vanessa, Although I know how to use flash I've never used flash with mirrorless cameras, On the R3 am I supposed to be in mechanical shutter and also have exposure simulation off? If so anything else I need to change in camera menu? Thanks!
I personally like mechanical shutter but I’m also single shot most of the time
Haha- of course everyone weighing in on _correct flash_ usage. I don’t understand it either but like you said, direct light is all the rage right now. 😂 great vid!
When using flash outdoors. Do you set your camera white balance to flash mode or say sunny/cloudy mode? This confuses me ty Vanessa….. you are such an inspiration!!
Happy to help!
So sunny and flash mode are very similar, about 5600K. If you set your WB to those while shooting with a flash (or a sunny day) you’ll get a well color balanced photo (not too warm or too cold). But if you set your white balance to cloudy day while using flash, then you’ll get a very warm look.
hello Vanessa very nice video, I just wonder if you don't loss quality in your photos when you rise The ISO, I see that also indoor you rise the ISO.
That was a wonderful video production discussing flash photography. May I please ask what is the difference between TTL and ETTL flash modes? Thank you 😊
Same thing :) different brands called it, something different for some reason, but it means exposure through the lens, or through the lens
Happy you liked it!
You model is supremely beautiful. & you're absolutely fabulous photographer
Vanessa...when utilizing bounce flash off a wall or ceiling, I recommend attaching an inexpensive black flag with rubber bands or similar so that it prevents unwanted direct light from the flash spilling onto your subject. The flag should be attached to the light head on the part of the flash that faces the subject so that the light coming out of the flash cannot be seen by your subject. This way, you're assured that only the soft, bounced light hits your subject.
Vanessa, you are so pretty and nice. 🙂
Thanks for your tutorials.
Is that the Halo 32 deflector your using towards the end? Seth did a few videos on it, and its on my new gear list.
Useful info, thank you! But just being honest, you could talk about how light detracts through a lens filter and how it influences exposure and I’d watch it. Especially if Julianna is the model. 🤷♂️
So, when using ETTL and aperture priority, do you need to worry about flash sync speeds. My flash has synch speeds of 1/60 and 1/200. Do I need to be thoughtful of my shutter speed? Or use high speed sync?
Yes you always want to be aware of your maximum sync speed, because then you have to go to high-speed sync after that and that lessens the power output from your light. That applies whether or not you’re shooting in ETTL and no matter what camera exposure mode you’re in
Great video, Vanessa and very informative. Your teaching skills are terrific. You give a lot of info without cramming it together. Great to see Giuliana, again, too. So, then, this location must’ve been in NJ. Where was it? Or did she fly down to TX? Hope you’re enjoying it down there and I hope the family is well too. Keep up the great work
Hi Vanessa! What kind of "single connection part" do you use for your camera strap at 4:14 min? That´s what I´m looking for... 😀
@@VanessaJoy Oooh ok, what a pity, looks very simple as I like these stuff. Thanks anyway...🙌🏻😃
Greetings! A tutorial and/or gear review I haven't seen much of is one dealing with camera harnesses. There are plenty of straps and harnesses out there but each one seems to own its own awkwardness.
Would you do a vid on camera harnesses?
Best
@@VanessaJoy What is your favorite one and why? I'm looking into replacing the one I have. Thanks!
Some very creative ideas 💡 Were you using 2nd curtain for the shot @ 1:14? I really liked the look of the light swirl. 😎
I found the diffuser to be useful when I cannot bounce the flash. I've got an ex 430 III RT speedlite. The diffuser gets rid of red-eye if aiming the flash at the subject directly even if setting FE to 2/3 of a stop. I still have to compare that to a catch light card which my flash comes with. I found the diffuser useful for closeup macro too since it pushes more light towards the sides, up and down too.
@@VanessaJoy thanks, learning by experimenting asking what if I do this or that.
What bounce modifier are you using on the flash at the “indoor on camera flash” section ?
You are THE photographer I aspire to be , except you wear a dress better lol , I been following , shooting and involved in photography since 1980s and you inspire for sure , I love on camera flash photography, there's so many ways you can shoot them
Hello Vanessa, great video as usual. I don't know what your experience has been, but I find that when you use on-camera flash in portrait mode and pointing at the subject, you tend to have that nasty sideshadow, especially when the scene is not back-lit. I suppose the angle of the light dictates where that shadow would fall. What do you think?
Oh you absolutely do get a nasty side shadow, but that nasty side shadow is very trendy right now
You can avoid that by keeping your light above the level of your lens by mounting your bounce cards or other modifier on the narrow side of your flash instead of the broad side. That way, when you tilt your camera in Portrait Orientation your light is still above your lens and not at an extremely low angle and to one side. Of course, that's if you're not using bare flash.
@@jasonbodden8816, you kind of lost me with your answer. Based on my experience, there is no way that you can flip your flash above the lens in portrait mode unless you are using some sort of flash bracket, which many people find to be quite cumbersome. The flash will always end up on the left side of the lens.
Just out of curiosity, you have such amazing cameras. Why are you using a M 50 mark 2 for examples? Asking cause I’m about to sell my m50 since I have an r6
Bc i like that camera and I like showing what can be done with it for people who don’t have the more expensive cameras
Vanessa. How does the On-Camera Flash affect the battery life? During the inside shots you had the battery extension but outdoors you did no?
Thanks,
Donald E.
The cameras battery life? I can’t say I’ve noticed much of a difference. I just happen to have the battery grip on for those. Not intentionally because of the flash though ☺️
what's a good flash for r6?
Depends on your budget and needs. High end I like the Canon EL-1 or the Profoto A10. Mid level the Canon 630 ex ii or used profoto A1X. Budget level I can’t say I have great recommendations but if you have the r6 I imagine you’re going to have a mid to high budget anyway ☺️
What lens do you used in the video?
Check out the gear list in the description, and to film the talking head we use the canon RF 85 mm 1.2 L
Vanessa, you keep referring to ETTL, but not every flash has it. Could you offer some tips for those of us that don't have ETTL?
You could use a light meter or just get a feel for the environments and how bright you’ll need your flash.
For example bounce flashing off of a wall or ceiling I know I’ll need a really bright flash, so I would probably start at half power.
If I was doing direct flash, even with the lower ISO, I would probably not need a very powerful flash with my subject nice and close to me so maybe I would start around 1/16 and adjust from there.
I've got my first photoshoot going in a few hours and I got to admit that I have learnt so much just by watching a couple of your videos.
I'm very thankful of your tips and yeah, amazing content Vanessa!
Good tips but the flash has a bounce card built in. 👍🏻
no not every flash does so best to teach without - but even if it does, that's a very flat way of lighting and bouncing off a wall will give you a more dynamic image. That being said, I use a bounce card if there are no walls to bounce off of :-)
Have not mounted a flash directly on my R3, which seems more robust, but even with limited on-camera flash (I should mostly off-camera flash), my 5D3, R6 had already been sent to CPS for loose hot shoe repair at about just below $300 (with Gold membership 20% discount) each time. If I need a flash on my camera for crowded parties, I mount it on a cold shoe on a cage, and use a transmitter to trigger it (and other strobes)
useful 18mins.
@4:39 wrong settings... Could've been very usable with lower shutter speed and higher ISO. Also, that lens has f2.0...
Lol what a cute little troll.
I’m teaching flash my dear… not how to get a proper exposure without it. I’m showing settings for how I would set my shutter on any given dance floor and I don’t shoot those with a lower shutter speed because I’ll get motion blur, and don’t like shooting them below 2.8 either because I’m usually focusing on multiple moving people on different planes of focus - not to mention a lot of people don’t have F2 lenses so it’s better to teach with a more obtainable example.
But even IF all of that wasn’t true, there’s nothing “wrong” about the settings. As opposed to how you wrote the aperture value. It’s written F2. Not f2.0.
Cheers.
@@VanessaJoy Vanessa, I'm not trying to troll. The issue is that the camera that was recording the video had a completely normal image and the ambience didn't look that dark but on your camera it looked so dark it didn't make any sense... And I'm sure other people are scratching there heads too.
BTW the f-number has actually a upper case N letter for symbol. And the f letter we use is the symbol for focal length which is lower case letter. So no, it's not F2, it's technically f/2.
THE T7 PROFESSIONAL
Honestly....where have you been all this time? Why did I have to wait 5 Years to get your videos recommended by youtube? (If you've even been that long on here)
I've seen videos by Zack Arias about flash usage but even he hasn't made a better tutorial than yours, at least in my opinion.
Well I’m glad you finally found me! Thanks so much for being here. I hope you stick around ☺️
These are just basics, nothing creative, just a click bait.
Maybe basics for you, but your comment is horribly rude for those learning. Not everyone knows what you and I know sir. Check yourself.
Vanessa you're a gem, I enjoy every one of your videos. It's refreshing to see a professional teach using affordable equipment. Demonstrating that beautiful portraits can be obtained without investing thousands of dollars into equipment.
Wow, thank you! So happy you like what I'm making. Please share if you think others will like it too!
