Great playing from one of the most sadly -- and unjustly -- underrated pinists in history. The second movement here is exquisite for it's depth, subtlety, delicacy and understated eloquence. Maybe it's because Cziffra looked more like a champion football player than a concert artist, but it's TRAGIC the way so many, apparently, missed perceiving the extredinary FINENESS of this wonderful artist.
Now THAT is how to play this sonata. Many others fall for a romantic approach, often arguing the circumstance in which it was composed. Well done, Maestro! A finest interpretation.
Super! Superb! etc. I've never heard a Mozart sonata played so beautifully with such intensity and absolute control at every moment. Amazing timing. What a great pianist. I must admist that I'm quite ignorant when it comes to knowing all of the genius pianists, and some of the true greats from "yesteryear" but that was an amazing performance. I am going to listen to more of Georges Cziffra and enjoy it! Thanks
Cziffra wasn't only a great Liszt player as many would have you believe. He also recorded a number of Beethoven Sonatas and Variations which are equally stylish.
I've been playing and listening to this for 60 years, always thought of it as hope, then loss of hope; darkness intrudes little by little until it overtakes all.
Veramente...
I'm not too surprised at the wealth of the repertory in this guy's possession. But, for this sonata? Lately, I don't want to hear any other than Glenn Gould's playing of this piece: Dinu Lippatti not withstanding. ' though it's a testimonial to the passing of his ( Mozart's) mother. It's still kind of a Romp. Certainly not what he intended when he composed it. The finale is joyous. Like a victory over death, if you will. Kind of like Mendelssohn's finale to his sonata in e minor. Also a romp. ' love it!!
Listen to Klien; several passages sound superficially similar to this rendition but in essence he plays very differently. I do not think it's Klien. Perhaps we don't really know whose rendition is this one but - I think it's perfect. Just perfect.
Cziffra just plays like what people thought in the 1950s how Mozart's music should sound like. He's audibly very out of his element here, even bored - I kind of feel sorry for him in a way.

unexpectedly the best Mozart I have ever heard...!!!
Georges Cziffra is my new favorite artist. Love his playing very much.

The sound of pure genius!

Excellent !!! This is the definition of sonata playing!!!.

that is a beautiful description; you have captured the essence of this sonata, of mozart himself. thank you.
oh yes, you are right
that is the best description of this sonata I've ever heard or read. thank you for your insight.
Beautiful ! 💐💐💐
Thank you.
Cziffra's insight for and affinity to the music he plays never fails to surprise me. Very moving!
instablaster.
Beautifully done! His enormous technique is evident in the brilliant rapidity of the trills but all very tasteful, all in the service of the music.
He made it breathe!
Magnificent

I respect this Mozart...
beautifully expressive 2nd movement
Is he sitting on Glenn Gould’s chair? Hmm
with a very good 2e movement too
De l'excellent Mozart !

The funny thing is Glenn Gould didnt even like mozart. He actually said it would have been better if Mozart died earlier 😅
I read some people think this sonata is dark...I don't find it so, do you?
only the first few measures
💕
He could do this too....and also many things that nobody else but Him!
Why the artist says Walter Klien? Is it really Cziffra?
Listen to Klien; several passages sound superficially similar to this rendition but in essence he plays very differently. I do not think it's Klien. Perhaps we don't really know whose rendition is this one but - I think it's perfect. Just perfect.
A change from Liszt
3:13 is a kind of nice piano dissonance
hai proprio ragione, è un po' monotona
Lipatti is more passionated and exuberant, I prefer this Sonata played by him, althogh I like this too. Mozart deserves 100% exuberance
1. Allegro maestoso
Effortless teqnique

He is very in his element after the first mvt imo . But yes the first movement does sound bland .
too lyrical. i call this sonata 'patetique'
listen to Richter.
yes Richter ! Richter plays with the sadness the anger that is in it too ( 2e movement )
but this performer is the same good as Richter
Good but not the best recording
