Happy New Year! Here are my top 11 Logic Pro tips to improve your workflow. What are your favorite Logic Pro workflow tips that were not mentioned in today's video? Let us know in the comments below ⬇
hey, thanks for all the work you do! would you mind sharing an example of when the playback behavior is a better default? WAIT**Real Time Edit: thought about this for 5 more seconds and it became immediately obvious. save dependency on looping sections, less "shift + ," close enough rewinds back to what we're listening for. however, i can also imagine situations this would be unhelpful. hard to weigh in my mind, but it must be a major net positive for you to lead by this and swear by it without explanation. will try!
I've been using Logic for almost 15 years and 4 minutes in I've already learned three things that would be incredible time or click savers .. Wow .. Thank you so much
Tip 7 is super super useful for pad instruments! When you have a chord sustained across a whole bar or two, but you wanna playback to just hear a section from beat 3 or something, it’s so jarring (and inaccurate) to NOT hear that pad under everything because you’re midway through the midi notes. Great tips!!!
Spent so much time looking for Low Latency mode or clicking between Display mores etc. Great way to start off the new year saving me time and effort. Keep up the good work man!
Thanks for the always great videos!! I have been using Logic Pro for approx 14 years now but never got deep down into more sophisticated use. I hit record, use Compressors - mix; but there so much more to it. I do think Logic rules 😉 Happy New Year !
Chris, brother. Thank you for all of these incredible videos. My praise and worship band are just about to kick off our journey of recording. Our first album. As a blind keys player, I am also the one recording/ producing/ and mixing our projects. You are very detailed in all of your explanations and I am grateful for that! Look forward to more tips and tricks this upcoming year!
Thank you so much . I updated to 11.1 but then could not hear myself in the mic when trying to record my vocals. You have just erased my frustration Chris. You are a legend.
Love it. great suggestions. For myself I am almost always set to "snap to relative" because much of my editing will be several ms before grid markings. "relative" allows me to cut paste to another position in the song and maintain that exact offset edit.
15:12 This is very true. It makes producing music much faster. My "Full Band" template consists of 1. Electric Guitar 1L 2. Electric Guitar 1R 3. Electric Guitar 2L 4. Electric Guitar 2R 5. Acoustic Guitar L 6. Acoustic Guitar R 7. Bass Guitar DI 8. Bass Guitar MIDI 9. Horns (Multi-Out) 10. Solo Violin 11. Hammond Organ 12. Electric Piano 13. Synth Keys 14. Drums (Multi-Out) 15. Very dope video. I've been using Logic for 10+ years (Logic Pro 9 and recently Logic X) and you've shown me some setting I'm sure I would have never known. Keep up the dope content! #YupYup
Another amazing video, Chris! I wonder how to change my playhead, and now I’ll do it immediately and yes, it really saves me a lot of time. Appreciate every detail that you share with us. Wish you plenty of inspiration this new year. Thanks again! 🙏🏼
Thanks very much! I’m sure I‘m going to use many of these suggestions, except the automatic colour coding which in my opinion makes the overview more difficult than easier. I‘d rather use a certain colour for different types of instruments (drums, basses, keys, vocals, etc.). All the rest is very good to try out respectively to use it., except the chase function in midi which I already know. Thanks. This brings me a step further. 💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Great tips. A few caveats though. At least on my system, I’m on Sonoma, the LCD won’t display sample rate and buffer size when I load a template. I have to choose Apply Defaults to make them appear. And setting the snap behaviour to Absolute isn’t saved, neither in a Project nor a Template. A bonus tip, if you use a lot of FX-busses as standard. You can name the busses (and the input and outputs). So much easier and quicker to find the right Send. Go the Mix menu and choose I/O labels. In my basic Template I have over thirty busses/channels of my favourite reverbs, rooms, delays… I have a Universal Audio system, so I can afford it, without taxing the Mac's system. This means I don’t have to go through the process of finding the right effect plug and load and tweak a preset for it. I real time saver for me, who generally use different processing for each instrument, to create a unique character. And then run them through a common room (or two😉). ✌✌
Chris: Thanks for all your help with Logic over the years. I have been using it to write and record since the magic days but you still find things that I didn't know so thanks. I have a question that you may be able to help with. I like to record to an external thunderbolt drive is there a way (like I did in Luna) to be able to have Logic always use this external drive to record to without always hav ing to select it and tell Logic to record there every single time I set up a new session in Logic?? Always wanted to know how to have proper time in the time line and you solved that in this video, thanks
Wow - I just stumbled over your channel and I loved your video. Since I experienced burnout 10 years ago I have a hard time managing the cluttered interface of Logic - do you have any tips how to make the user interface more minimalistic? Thanx!
Hi Chris , thank you for your next awesome video. I have question about the best method of how to divide long live recordings into separate project files. I can't find it anywhere. Do you know how to do it?
Got a logic sample question I need answering ASAP! So I saved all my logic projects onto an external. Factory reset my old mac and reinstalled Logic. All my projects are there and the samples work but only within the project. I can't seem to find them outside of the project it was saved in. Where are my samples and how do I get them into new projects? Hopefully someone can help me out.
Thank you Chris for all the great tips! My workflow is getting more efficient from all your great advice. I’m having an ongoing issues with my play head not continuing to show where it is in the song. As soon as the play head reaches the edge of the page it disappears. Have you experienced this and if so, do you have a fix for it? Thanks and Happy New Year!
I’ve just discovered your channel! Love it. I have a template setup for one drum kit can I duplicate the template but change the track numbers? I have enough tracks available on my mixer and additional mics. The goal is that whichever kit I decide to use I can just pill up that template and I’d be ready to go. How can I reassign a track number. Ie if the snare is on track 4 and on a new template I want to change it to track 1.
Thanks for the video. Is there any hope for the option to change the waveform color to something other than white, or are apple firm on this? Also scalable mix window to get taller faders?
I have an age old question that no one seems to be able to assist me with, I have ask this under a few of you episodes I believe but no answer hope you did see it. Important a song or a clip, tell it to follow tempo, increase or decrease project tempo and try to reverse the song or clip. That function is greyed out. It you remove the follow tempo it comes back. Important for making scratches when doing mixtapes. Please assist and continue making these amazing videos ❤
yeah this is something with Logic that has frustrated me too, for some reason when using any of the Flex functions on an audio region it doesn’t allow you to reverse it. So you basically have to commit to any Flex edits and bounce the audio before being able to reverse it if that makes sense
Do you know if there is a Delta button option in logic? I use logic for years but never found anything about this, but i know that there is one in reaper for example, you can actually hear what your plugins are doing
dope tips! Got any tips for logic freakin the fook out when your working at speeds from 10 years ago and moving the playhead or selecting a few regions didn't lock up logic ... or cause it to go into a "spazz" mode where it constantly restarts it self (to bar 0 or beginning of the loop cycle), either at random or whenever you are trying to just play your track back. Seems like Logic has fallen apart in recently updates. I am hoping its some sort of configuration issue that causes it to do wacky things, but all the forums seem to just be asking the same questions I am lol. SAVE US!
Regarding playback, seems to me that using a cycle loop does the same as "Play From Last Locate Position." Then you can keep the default setting to continue playback from where it had stopped. So you have a choice of either for each situation.
I don't understand why in DAWs like Logic that "time" begins with the one hour mark. Chris, you said oh it's 2:30 seconds long but it says 1:02.30. Why??? It's really confusing to me visually.
I believe that it’s related to the video world. Hour 1, minute 2, seconds 30. Personally, I changed mine to start at 0. Project settings > Synchronization < (after Plays at SMPTE) change the initial 01 to 00.
just upgraded to 11, now when I push my midi events velocity all the way up it only goes as high as the hardest velocity I played, it used to be that when I pushed a selection up I could bring all the events to 127.
I have to disagree with your way of using auto-colour for tracks. So you create eight audio tracks as you did. Sure, they’re coloured, but they’re not “colour-coded” are they? What’s the code? Is it “this colour denotes a guitar track”? No, because they’re all different colours. If you really want your tracks colour-coded, you can definitely do it, but you have to put the work in manually. Decide on particular colours for your drums, bass, guitars etc. and set them up by hand. Then save them in your template…
Logic pro 11 and sonoma has ruined my workflow… the electronic drum kits like 808 flex and so on don’t work…can’t find my recently opened projects in recent folder… logic freezes every now and then.. tried deleting plist, reinstalling logic but nothing works…plz help! Edit : Try updating to sequoia.. I did and it solved all of my problems. Hope this helps!
And whatever you do and need to update macOS Ventura to Sonoma (because Seqoia is not compatible with your external plug-ins) in order to update to Logic v11.1.1… brace yourself for all kind of problems and mentaly prepare yourself for doing a clean USB install. of Sonoma 14.7.0.
