- Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. We are finally done with the overhaul and restoration of the rear differential of a 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne. This 8.2" type 3 differential was used by General Motors from 1955-1964. The differential design utilizes threaded adjustable side bearing spacers to control side bearing preload and backlash.

This video helps satisfy the requirements of the following NATEF tasks - 3.E.E1:
1. Clean and inspect differential housing; check for leaks; inspect the housing vent.
2. Check and adjust the differential housing fluid level.
3. Drain and refill differential housing.
4. Diagnose noise and vibration concerns; determine necessary action.
5. Inspect and replace companion flange and pinion seal; measure companion flange runout.
6. Inspect ring gear and measure runout; determine necessary action.
7. Remove, inspect, and reinstall drive pinion and ring gear, spacers, sleeves, and bearings.
8. Measure and adjust drive pinion depth.
9. Measure and adjust drive pinion bearing preload.
10. Measure and adjust side bearing preload and ring and pinion gear total backlash and backlash variation on a differential carrier assembly (threaded cup or shim types).
11. Check ring and pinion tooth contact patterns; perform necessary action.
12. Disassemble, inspect, measure, and adjust or replace differential pinion gears (spiders), shaft, side gears, side bearings, thrust washers, and case.
13. Reassemble and reinstall differential case assembly; measure runout; determine necessary action.
Questions:
1. Why should a new pinion nut always be used?
2. What problem can occur when installing a pinion seal?
3. Why are the splines of the pinion gear supposed to be coated with Teflon sealant?
4. Why, when installing the pinion gear into the front pinion bearing, does the pinion gear not just slide inside the bearing. In other words, why must the bearing be pressed or tapped down slightly before installing the pinion flange?
5. Google "Bearing Brinnelling" What can cause bearing brinelling?
6. Why does there need to be endplay in the front bearing when installing it?
7. Google the datasheet for Loctite 271 thread-lock compound. How many hours are required before the liquid thread-lock is fully cured?
8. What is the purpose of the blue pinion flange holding tool?
9. How much torque is required to start crushing a crush sleeve?
10. How much torque must be applied to a 4:1 torque multiplier to obtain 350 lb*ft of torque (assuming a 20% frictional loss)?
11. If you still have up and down endplay in the pinion gear, are you preloading the bearings or are you still crushing the crush sleeve?
12. How can you tell if you are actually preloading the pinion bearings?
13. Why should you always rotate preloaded bearings a few times before measuring their actual preload?
14. What should you do if you apply too much preload to the pinion bearings (on an axle with a crush sleeve)?
15. What do I mean by taking "baby steps" in the video?

Rewatching this video I've come to realize this is the best instructional video on setting up a rear differential..Besides watching a lot of videos,I've been setting up diffs for 46 years...Never too old to learn things, especially from a good teacher like your self..Much respect from this old mechanic err technician professor..

Very thorough. If I was having my stuff worked on I would want a person like you doing it. I have been a precision Tool Maker for 44 years and greatly appreciate care in settings, precision in movement and loading and a clean orderly working environment. I'm glad my 1963 SS 409 never needed this repair as I was a young man then and wouldn't have taken the time or had the tools to do this correctly. This type of education is getting harder and harder to come by. Most are more interested in quick, fast, cheap and this kind of care and attention to detail gets lost. Thank you.

When I saw these videos, chills ran up my spine. My first car was a '63 Chevy. I swapped out the 3.36 gears for 4.56's. When you install a "posi" in an open housing, you have to grind out the internal webbing. I was eighteen; NONE of my procedures were correct. (ha ha) Of all the "stuff" I have seen on TV and TH-cam, this is the FIRST and ONLY correct procedure for installing differential gears. Thank You for another great presentation, and a nice trip down memory lane.

Rebuilt my M78 Ford diff on the weekend, by F#£{ it was diff iclt 😏 Thanks to your video I now know that I got the pre load incorrectly set… Oh well, always this weekend, back up on jackstands for the ole Ford Ute.

" Attention To Detail " I started my career as a aircraft mechanic , then I assembled satellites , and eventually became a Flight Test Engineer , and a Propulsion Engineer.............I think the most important thing I have learned is every step , every procedure , and every design , every task is only done correctly when you know every detail , and execute every step with ..............." Attention To Detail " ........... and this is a beautiful example of it ..............I got the opportunity to work with many young engineers and technicians at the end of my career on the launch pads at Vandenberg AFB , and I was happy to see that we have great young people that take this approach to hart . Again Great instructional presentation from a truly professional Teacher.

I had a difficult time finding any relevant information on this style differential.
This rear differential was used till 64 in the Impalas. The brand new 19*64 Chevelle got the newly designed differential with the shims not the adjusting nuts on the carrier.

I'm doing a 7.5 CHEVY locking differential never done one before so after watching this video step by step I think I'm able to do it with cautious thank you so much for posting this amazing video. I did all my bearings and raises now I'm exited to get my 85 Ls1 camaro going with my new 4:10 gears :)

since my last post I finally this week did it from scratch on my 64 chevy 1/2 ton pickup and it worked out perfect....your attention to detail is what made it happen for me...mic'd the pinion shim was .027 ...put the same .027 back in but different shim.....also managed to get the stock side shims in (you do have to tap them in if you want preload).022-.015=7 x 3.73=26.11.....pattern was great.......no noise an working perfect ....couldn't have done it without your video.......thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those threaded rotator adjusters are the bomb.
Watched the entire series. Excellent quality, well documented. The last 1/8th turn from the multiplier was an eye opener when it came to how much it affected torque measurement.
Getis Realis Thank you for watching. I am glad you noticed that 1/8th turn. It is so tough to not over tighten the nut and exceed the preload.
Great series John. I drank a few cups of coffee too many watching it. One little tip I found useful was when installing the pinion oil seal ,if I didn't have a stepped install tool that expanded the garter spring I would apply grease on the back side of the seal. That would help avoid what happened to you in the video. Setting up a new crown wheel and pinion from scratch can be time consuming and frustrating. I haven't rebuild a diff in a long time but this bought back memories!

I've been an installer of gears for more than 25 years and I don't have anything I can say that he failed to cover and he did it correctly. If your looking for a instructional video on gears he demonstrates the professional knowledge and he does an excellent job. I highly suggest following his methods in this video. Great job!

wonderful John , many thanks all the way from South Africa - after watching your videos I am busy doing my own differential for a 1971 Mazda (Courier) pickup that I am completely rebuilding from naked chassis upwards, its almost exactly the same design as the 1963 differential you exhibited

As for the girdle spring popping out of the seal when being hammerd in, apply a coat of grease to the inside and over the girdle spring before installing it. The grease with it's sticky substance, will hold the pring better in place and keep it from popping out while hammering the seal in place.

Sir, I just want you to know that you are a MASTER of your profession. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I just put together a 1956 Chevy 3200 rear and was worried I set the preload on the carrier side bearings too tight. After watching you I think I did it correct. They have to be very tight I guess. It was hard to tell what they (GM Manual) mean by "firmly into contact etc..." Thanks again!

John, i remember doing my first ring and pinion on a 1927 Fordson Tractor back in the early 70"s when i was 16 and i was taught by an old Swedish Engineer and i remember it took me a couple of days to get that darn thing correct.I think i took it apart like 3 times just to get all the preloads correct.,because i was dealing with shims and bronze gears and wow was he tough on me and watching your video was like i was being taught by him.Excellent and Thank you.

I haven't set up a rear end in 40 years, but I watched the whole thing just to be transported back to Steve Mcgee at Salina KS area vo-tech in the mid 70s....
I remember a classmate setting the read wheel bearing on his Dodge pickup so tight he had to pack snow on them to get home from the shooting range...He was NOT amused, but we thought it was great....:) I kind of miss being able to work on cars....
