  • This is day 2 for this student learning new range skills. Most important is a good set-up. Backing up one to two yards to the rear cone. Will post better training videos in the weeks ahead. For this range skill

    Steve, again I'm thoroughly impressed. You instruct your students step by step, to follow directions to a science, correct them and explain why, all while allowing the student just enough freedom to think for themselves to better internalize mentally what they are doing each step of the way. I wish our school had a more designed approach to learning this craft. There's a lot of things you're doing here, and a lot of markings and cones that I'm assuming most schools aren't using. There's many good truck drivers at these schools. I'm learning more and more that there isn't nearly as many good instructors. Maybe their own school administration is holding them back from acquiring the neccessary TEACHING skills that should be required to instruct students properly. Either way, the student suffers for it, and the instructors will have tougher days in being successful with what they teach, more than is neccessary. Lastly, you're encouragement is genuine and your student corrections are direct, yet professional. Very impressive.

    • @truckerstevecdlinstructor

      Cannot thank you enough for your kind words. Please keep me updated on your progress. Was you able to do the offset to the left? Mirrors properly adjusted.
      Do your setup- turn the steering wheel to the right fully. Backing up looking into the left mirror stop when the tractor is about at a 45 degree angle. Your instructor can help you with this. Also in your left mirror, you can see the trailer heading to the left. Next follow up with the right and back up until you can see the left trailer tires .
      You are now straight. If needed, make any adjustments going backwards. In the right mirror, you should be able to do the left line. Back up until the left trailer tire is just over the line. ( also once again, if space between the cone and the line is large- make the needed adjustments. Now the left tire is a little over the line - hard left to bring the tractor trailer into the left lane. Use your pull up If needed .

      @@truckerstevecdlinstructor Oddly enough, I performed the best today on my 4th lesson than before, and my instructor was only a 5 year experienced Class A driver. She got her Class A at the same school, and during the same time I was going for my Class B. Now she's an instructor on the side when not driving trailers full time every week. You can't teach something like proper driving if you yourself aren't also a good driver. But just being a good driver won't guarantee you'll be a good teacher. She had a gift for teaching. A gift that most truck instructors don't have. You have that same gift. I hear it in your explanation and the way you instruct your students. You would've made a fine school teacher. Fortunately for us, you found your heart in truck driving and found an untaught skill in being naturally good at teaching others. Keep it up my friend. My class went better today, and although I have to leave for work soon, I picked up some graph paper today, and when I get home, I'm going to start visually and geometrically draw out my offset maneuvers with the aid of the graph paper. I've also asked my wife to help me find a proper toy truck semintrailer on Amazon. Does it matter if the front tires don't turn like a real truck? The truck I found at Walmart had fixed front tires, so I passed on it, figuring if the front steer tires don't literally turn, it wouldn't be much help in understanding how the tractor controls the trailer in backup maneuvers. Is this true, or it doesn't matter for a toy truck? Thanks.

      If the rear left most tire goes past the line, when the student backs in the trailer will most likely encroach on the right side. Stop just before the line or close to it. If the tire is just off or very close to the cone , the tire will need to be on the line. Where are you an instructor at?

    I have been struggling at school getting the truck straight after I come out the box and get up to the green cones. My trailer always ends up crooked to the left then I’m not lined up properly to do the reverse offset. At the MVA test, do they let you straighten out your trailer before you back up to do the reverse offset if you are crooked?

    • @truckerstevecdlinstructor
      @truckerstevecdlinstructor  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you are not straight, you will have to back up Then pull up straight and you will get a point. That skill, there is no free back-ups. When your right tire goes between the cone and the line, go a little to the right then start straightening out. Where are you testing at?

      I assume you are referring to backing into the alley. After you do your forward off- tracking skill, you should be straight and parallel to the outermost boundary line (to your left). You blow your horn and the examiner explains the final skill. You can do your setup where you can at. A true offset back. Or you can back up until your right trailer tires is aligned with the cones. Don’t go to far past the cones. ( just near it).

      The convex mirror should not have to be adjusted. The big mirrors on the right and left side, you should be able to clearly see the side of your trailer walls and the right/ left tandems. Also you should see the areas to the right and left of your trailer.

    Certain instructors at the school that I'm currently at just leave it up to us to do it on our own then certain ones tell us step by step what to do which pretty much teaches us nothing. I'm really struggling badly with this and wish I had found a school with instructors like this cuz I think I would grasp it much easier cuz right now the way things are going I'm not sure I'm even going to get my CDL A at this point.

    • @truckerstevecdlinstructor

      A good CDL instructor will teach - let the student try a skill on his own - if necessary more instruction. Telling a student every turn of the steering wheel is not teaching. If a student drifts to the left and does not fix it, I say STOP 🛑. Ask the student What went wrong? How would you correct the drift on your next try? Now take a deep breath and let’s do it again.

    I am a professional Moroccan professional driver, and I have been working here in Morocco for several years, but unfortunately the price in my country is very deficient, as we do not exceed 700 euros per month, even though we work day and night and we do not have time to rest except for a few hours after we are completely exhausted, for example we sleep from 24 hours Only three or four hours and we work for the other 20 hours. I know that you will be surprised by this and you may say that it is impossible, but it is the truth, gentlemen. I have been searching for work in Canada or America for three years, but no one answers me. I hope to find someone to help me move there.
