I just want to let you know, I just started my first local trucking job. Our terminal is small and I was having difficulty backing a 53ft into our dock. I watched this video really quick before doing it and was able to dock successfully between two other 53fts. Thank you very much for this information!
Ive been driving 27 years, have pulled all sorts of equipment, oversize, and backed thousands of trailers in virtually every kind of scenario. Just want to say to all of you just starting out...the more you do it, the better you get! Really awesome of this channel to give references to help! Stay safe out there and we will see ya on the flip
Tried it, unfortunately I didn't make the cut, a couple of hrs for 2 days of training and 3 days total is not enough time in my opinion, this is only for pulling & backing trailers in the yard.
2 months in my trucking career and never had to do a alley dock parking maneuver before and was never taught in school. Until last week where I Ended up hitting one of my company’s trucks and did some damage. Nothing to bad just cracked the bumper. Watched this video and was able to pull it off this week 😂. Thanks man. Appreciate the vid
Hands down, best alley docking video on You Tube. It shows the “Bird’s eye view” and direction of the steer tires at the same time... Remember this, and practice practice.... THANK YOU!!!
I’m brand new to the trucking scene. I’ve been getting lucky with hardly any truckers parked at the truck stops when it’s time for my 10 hr reset. But damn do I struggle to alley dock even then. I’m definitely going to try this maneuver out! I tend to always overshoot my spot and set myself up perfectly to park where someone is already parked 😂 😢 I’m hoping I get the hang of it real soon! Thanks for everything Edit: 1 day after watching this video I did EXACTLY what you said and guess who parks with so much ease now!!!! You’re a god send man thank you so much! Well deserved subscription earned !!!!
After working in a yard as a spotter I’ve see a lot of guys not paying attention to the front bumper and hit the wall. Use and trust your mirrors! Always try to “see side in” if you can.❤
Started a new job after driving for 6 years and absolutely killed this maneuver on the first try on the drive test. Now I have a reference to help explain what the hell I’m doing to my friends. Thx!
This is a perfect representation of our docs at work. Except it’s tighter and we do have to jackknife into it. Only every made it in a couple times without having to pull-up. 😂
I can't believe I'm consulting a video game now, but I really need to ace this alley dock. Thanks for putting this together. Hopefully I'll be thanking you from my cab next time.
Hard level #5 had me absolutely destroyed yesterday. I just couldn't do it. Today, I tried it once and failed and then watched you do this SIMULAR level here. Now I've done it 2 of 3 attempts with no hits and 2 GOAL's. This is definitely helping me prepare. I remembered you saying be in the middle when you have no room and that did the trick!
That would be a dream to have such available space 😂. Future drivers be prepare to see muuuuuccchhhh smaller yards!!! And sometimes in the middle of the night or early morning, sometimes in heavy rain 🌧️ or snow ❄️ with bunch of “Rockies” swift or something along targeting your track))) I am serious!!!
Exactly how I'd do it if trailers were in front of me, but I would've setup facing lane 4 and drove towards 6 while flipping around and turning into a straight back. If you have the room, use it all.
I’m really struggling with my reversing at the moment, it’s driving me crazy as I been driving for 18 years all different classes, it’s extremely frustrating as I have done some good backs many times but I can’t reverse some days, I get extreme anxiety if I know people are watching and it’s a tight space which is bad because I basically fall to pieces, if I’m on my own with no one around I’m fine. The places I go to have yard marshals and they used to let me park in a place where I could practice reversing in, about 2 months ago they stopped drivers parking there and only certain trucks can park there now so I’ve basically not had any practice reversing there, when I finally get to reverse and everyone watching I fall to pieces and look like a complete idiot. It’s affecting my everyday life as I think about it everyday and I would love to perfect my reversing and stop worrying about this bull!!! the only way I can think of to practice is going to motorway truck stops, last time I did I never hit anything but was struggling and drivers watching me lol 1 old miserable driver came upto me and said ‘ your not doing very well are you’ and complaining about he’s paid £10 to park and I shouldn’t practice there. I tried explaining this is the ONLY place I can as all the FedEx/TNT and pallet networks I go to have yard marshals and you can park or reverse anywhere your not allowed to. Sod em!!!
You shouldnt care about what others think brother, youre doing something thats specialized that very few people know how to actually do backing up anykind of truck like this requires an immense amount of patience, understanding and finesse. These people think its like a car and id bet most of them would give up because its too hard, youre different though and persist, you got this bro.
@@jhurricanec been driving hgvs 18 Years done all soughts of work- sea freight containers/multi drop all around London that was VERY stressful!!!/ trunking/ I’m just driving 18t now around heathrow airfreight done this all my working life, just want a relaxing stress free job. I’ve mainly done permanent nights. tbh I HATE driving now even my car, driving is very stressful now too many idiots on the road!!! get spoken to like piece of crap most of the time. I stopped doing overtime a few years ago, just want to do only what I have too. weekends off
As someone who also suffers from anxiety, all you can do, is all you can do. Relax, breathe, focus on what you're doing and imagine yourself being the only one on the place. Real drivers take their time and will understand if you're struggling. They struggle too. Everyone else can sit tight, or jog on.
Try backing in to Philly Cold Storage back in the day. 46 foot of ally to back a 45 foot trailer in. We were not straight ahead drivers or steering wheel holders back then.
A rule of thumb is to keep away from the wall a minimum distance of half the tractor length from bumper to rear axle. You don't want to let the rear axle of the tractor to go past that point.
You are awesome I watch all your videos and have your game your videos helped me tremendously..been team driving for 1.5 yrs...still have trouble getting in the hole...I feel like setup is perfect however I get lost when starting to cack in the hole..you said its all math & angles...can you please give a basic step by step what to look for ex where back of trailer should be or tandems when backing to get in hole...the imaginary line doesn't work for me...I don't feel confident to go solo..
Oh man this is like Harry Potter shit 😂 I've just started my class one training and currently driving 7.5tonne.... It's hard enough to reverse that and then I see this and really wonder about doing class one. Everyone tells me it's easier than it looks but I'm not convinced
I don't use this method. I guess you just get the feeling eventually. I've been doing it 14 years now and get it in first time. If there are 2 trailers either side of the bay you need to get on...your trailer bend has to be very accurate.
Actually no, not that simple, may not even be possible with that axles all the way back. When you I have the axles to the rear when backing up with very little room in front of the space you find that your truck doesn't have the room to get back under the trailer. I need to do a video on the disadvantages and advantages of axle positions.
WOW, looks so easy, but in reality it isn't First time I back into a dock, it took me 30mins, know ones help, drivers just watch, and I am sure make comments over the CB, but I all good I got it in the lane. Coming from hauling livestock and never hit a dock, I was very proud of myself. Hit getting the chute in livestock you have tons of room, chutes are not that close at all
Got my cdl two months ago and I deliver beer I had to back like this up to a liquor store and I could not do it without going over the curb I began to get frustrated man, I need practice
This can’t be used as a guide, on the ground actually reversing the trailer is the only way to learn actually. The info here helps, but it’s not definitive.
hi David can u do the videos all same as you did in american verssions in Europian virssion I mean ALLEY dock strait back 0 degree back and so on thank u very much you are really profissional .
I just got a job driving a semi and Im having difficulties reversing especially in tight areas. Reversing in rigid trucks are easy but the articulated is another story. can you give advise on how to reverse in tight or narrow areas. also when reversing straight, for some reason the trailer decides to go of course. Is there a way to fix that? I seem to over correct and I stuff myself up continuously. I know how to reverse my car trailer but reversing a semi is a different ball game.
When reversing straight, you need to look in both mirrors when backing up and the image in both mirrors need to look the same with regards to how much of the trailer you see. Playing my game will help BTW, it teaches your eye hand coordination. There is a link in the discription for it. Plus I have like 100 more videos your can watch.

Pull up as often as you need; you still get paid the same. Pay no attention to the BBRs on the radio. 👍

I'm sure you will. Download the game, it can only help you. You make the same steering wheel decisions in the game as you would in a real truck.

Try backing in to Philly Cold Storage back in the day. 46 foot of ally to back a 45 foot trailer in. We were not straight ahead drivers or steering wheel holders back then.
My biggest mistake is judging the initial setup distance from the wall so that I get the room to swing the cab.
