The fact that she is the one who comforts him by reassuring he will remain friends with her son.... just shows what a generous and decent person she is.
He knew he loved her, he just hadn't learned how to LIVE love. Everything was centered around HIS career, and not THEIR life. He hadn't yet figured out how to share his career with his life, and that his life was more important than his career.
It's also that most of the modern writers are so sheltered that they have no experience to draw from to write a film like this, so they just regurgitate old movies that they didn't fully understand when they watched them in the first place.@@9cross

Such good scenes. They break your heart watching it. Jerry wouldn't show his feelings, and Dorothy stood her ground even though her heart was broken in two. All he did was stare.
As a kid I could never understand why people would break up like this. Just stay together! It was that simple! Now as an adult I find it’s actually very easy for people to break up like this and hard to stay together.
All marriages lose their spark after 5+ years. Breaking up because of that is childish and immature, as it's just life. It's never perfect and sometimes far from perfect. You accept it and make the best of it.

What happens after 5ish years is that the initial "gas" runs out and now to keep the fire of romance going you have to learn how to add logs to the fire regularly. You have to learn to rebuild over and over during the years to make it a win/win situation as you both change and grow. The 5ish year change is the OPPORTUNITY for your love to develop roots to grow more deeply in love than ever before. Most people just quit instead of learning the new tools. You love your old dog or cat MORE over time, not less. You love your children MORE over time, not less. And my parents loved each other MORE over time not less. You cherish cuddling that dog MORE as the years go by because you know someday he won't be there anymore. Your thoughts, words, and actions are lined up together to treat the dog well, to spend time playing...if you get bored, you play a NEW GAME with your puppy and you delight in the changes over time. You do NOT get mad at the dog for being dependent and having to pay a lot to feed it. When he is crippled with arthritis, you still love on him and treat him more softly and kindly and remember the pup who used to run wild. You FREELY extend your life/home/food/time/energy/love etc... to care for your pet Like come on people. If you were as good to partners as you are to your pets, you could be in love forever. Yes, it takes 2 reciprical people... but do YOUR PART CONSISTENTLY at least. Then if they "run away from home to get a new home..." then you can search for another. But each person needs to be responsible for their own output of consistent effort of giving towards their partner. If you sometimes beat your dog OR your partner emotionally or physically you will destroy love. If you don't take your dog go on a walk, it will pee on the carpet and it is YOUR fault, not a bad dog. Fix YOUR part, seek win/win solutions, make time TO LOVE (not to seek to GET), don't berate them and wow... surprise.. great relationship results.
Amazing that Cruise had two of the top four highest grossing movies in the US in 1996, this and Mission Impossible. Dude can crush it in so many types of roles.

It translates into his personal life with someone who is trying to love him. He speaks about personal connection, but continues to stretch himself thin. Her breaking up with him after that particular phone call was exactly what he needed to finally start to get it.

How did it go? Yeah it’s a horrible feeling. I remember this girl I was seeing, we were so into each other and I went on holiday to come back and the vibe was off. She started being flaky with the plans, saying she was ill and couldn’t come out with me that night. Then one day I asked her if we could do something together the day after and got the message of “I think we should go back to being friends”. Hurt like hell, that horrible gut feeling just instantly kicked in. You get over it though, a few years later she now is trying it on with me again, tried to kiss me and I’m long over her. I’ll kiss her back sometimes but now it’s like me just having control of not wanting to pick it back up with her, now I’m the one that fucks her off and she’s chasing after me when I few years ago I dreamed of having that back. Now I just have her as an option but chase after other girls.

I was with a girl one time and she had a daughter who liked when I came over we’d all watch movies and her daughter would lean on me between me and the girl and fall asleep and I think the girl looked at me the same way as Renee did to Jerry, her kid was cool as heck too. There wasn’t any closure with that relationship.

Dorothy is not the only woman who walked out on Jerry in this movie but if it is Avery(Kelly Preston) Jerry said “You complete me” to it will not even be half as good. As, why do I love you. You loved me first when I needed to be love. You sacrificed to love me, you drove to love me. Then I fell in love with your face, your voice, and they way you held me. But I fell in love with you and I still am but I had to pull back and love me because you broke up and left me. I never stopped loving you.

In the beginning of the film Jerry has an attack of conscience and types up a mission statement to his former company stating agents should have fewer clients and better personal relationships with them. It was what first attracted Dorothy Boyd's attention to him.
