Endorphin Speed vs. Hyperion Tempo

  • Today, I'm comparing two of my favorite shoes so far for 2020, the Saucony Endorphin Speed and the Brooks Hyperion Tempo. Think about that for a second: two of my favorite shoes right now are from Brooks and Saucony. 2020 just keeps on surprising us.
    On paper, these two shoes are very different. On feet, the comparison is much closer.

    I just bought both shoes! I was surprised that the Hyperion Tempo feels and acts so differently from the speeds. After trying the Speed's as a daily, I started to get shin splints but the Tempos in the mix fixed it! Thought they would be the same but in reality, they compliment each other very well! Speeds for fast runs or track work and Tempos for cruising days!

    I recently purchased the Endorphin Speed and ran 18 miles in them right out of the box with no problems. It’s definitely a versatile shoe. It’s good for fast or slow, long or short runs. It appears to be pretty durable so far. And at the price point of $160 US retail you really can’t go wrong.

  • @GoSparker
    @GoSparker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fordy did a similar review yesterday. I'll leave a similar comment as I left there. I have both the Hyperion Tempo and the Saucony Speed. Small unscientific sample but I ran a duplicate tempo run on different days at the same time of day on a rolling course in both shoes and the Tempo averaged 11 seconds/mile faster. I have a hill repeat course where I run 6 repeats that are about a minute in duration. The Tempo averaged 4 seconds per repeat faster (ran the 2 workouts a week apart - temperature was 2 degrees warmer for the Tempo workout, same time of day, no gels or anything before any of these workouts). The fastest repeat with the Speed was 1 second slower than the slowest repeat with the Tempo. I weighed 1 pound lighter after the Speed workout than after the Tempo workout. Heart rate was the same average and max for both workouts - by chance, I didn't try to make them match. The Tempo is 1.05 oz lighter than the Speed in US 10.5 and it is noticeable on the hills. The Speed fits better on my narrow foot but the Tempo seems to breathe better - maybe because of the somewhat wider fit. I'm 175 pounds and the Speed seems to be a bit more of a jarring foam than the Hyperion. My achilles remind me of this. There are several shoes I prefer to the Speed including the Zoom Fly 2, but the Tempo is similar to my Vapor Fly flyknit in terms of times on course. Other's results may vary.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's an interesting comparison. i came up the other way, running the same workout but not necessarily trying to hit the same exact times or paces. The Speed ended up being faster for me, but I have largely attributed that to the fact that I ran the workout in the Speed came first and the workout in the Tempo came two days later. So I was fresher in the Speed.

    • @jamescushing7704
      @jamescushing7704 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting, I thought the speed had softer foam? I have issues with my Achilles so would need the best one for that??

    • @GoSparker
      @GoSparker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamescushing7704 James - If you put the Speed on one foot and the Tempo on the other and walk around it is quite noticeable how the outer heal on the Speed feels kind of like it is beveled outward (less heel distal, more heel medial - or at least some sort of cushioning difference) whereas the Tempo feels more consistent and does not try to adjust you (not sure if that makes sense but if you can put one on each foot you'll see what I mean). For my stride it makes the landing a little unstable. The stack height doesn't give you that much squish so it may be built up that high to produce the rocker motion rather than the plush ride. I don't feel the plate much so to me the Speed feels like a fairly firm landing and then transitioning to a less dense feel in the toe off. The Tempo is more uniform throughout - as you may expect with using the same foam and no plate. Clearly a lot of people like the Speed but I've been finding that a lot of times when I use a shoe that tries to change what you naturally do (like the action from a plate or the hip adjustment that JW mentioned when designing the Endorphine line) that sooner or later I get niggles or injuries.

    I got the Endorphin Speed recently and the best thing about it is it is so versatile. I run a lot in the Pegasus 36 and 37, but when I am sore after a Long run, as I was today, after running a sub-4 hour marathon in training yesterday, the Speed got me through a 12k recovery run, but then it was also my go to shoe for last Thursday's tempo run. I'm running a 6 hr virtual run in 3 weeks, the Speed will be my shoe for the first 50k, in a bid to take over an hour off my current pb, then I will switch to the Pegasus 37 for the last 1.5 hrs of easy running to finish. It's such an easy shoe to run in, whether it is a recovery day or a tempo run. It's actually hard not to want to run in it every day.

    Very helpful. Loving the Hyperion Tempo, and think I’ll hold off on adding the Speed. Usually don’t love high stack, and not sure I would benefit from nylon plate.

    • @tsubakichan
      @tsubakichan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you mean Hyperion Elite? He's said he's passing on it for 2 reasons: 1. Shoe reviewers hated it for its harshness and it's truly for the elite Des Lindens of the world and not normal folk. 2. Within a day or two of release, Brooks announced a complete revamp in a Hyperion Elite 2, coming out later this year

    As good as many shoes are TECH/performance wise...they mess up some shoes using fruity colours. Colours you'd find on a 6 year olds snakers. Which makes finding the right shoees for the job hard for some adults wanting a pair of shoes that are up to the task but with a grown up look/colours.

    People I am new to running and I want to buy shoes. BUT, I am totaly lost, there are so many shoes that I do not know what to buy. All I know is that I do not like too soft shoe. I like more Vivobarefoot for running than Ultraboost. :D I can not run long distances now and I do not care about price.

      Hoka Rincon is a fantastic tempo day shoe for me and I have the Brooks Ghost 12 for my long runs although they are a bit heavy for my liking. Still super comfy

  • @tofera
    @tofera 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve tried the Speeds (I’m a 5.20-5.30km runner) and springy heel which did feel a bit unstable compared to ultraboost. I didn’t feel any plate and that may be due to my speed/build/foot strike. I also have Hoka carbon x and I do feel faster in them and the rocker is more pronounced than on the Speeds. I have sold the Speeds and kept Carbon X’s!

    What’s thoughts of endorphin speed vs Nike zoom fly 3?

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      on paper, they seem pretty similar. but i think the Speed is much more successful of a shoe than the zoom fly 3. the zf3 had a bit too much weight to it. it was still a very fun shoe to run in, but i don't like it as much as the Speed.
