The UK has recently had quite a bit of snow, so I decided to paint this loose watercolour snow scene today. I leave it really loose and simple today, but if you try something similar you could always add more detail if you prefer.
I used Saunders Waterford cold pressed paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, taped to my board with decorator's masking tape, with my board at an angle of about 45 degrees. My colours were ultramarine blue, indigo, lavender blue, raw and burnt sienna and yellow ochre, various brushes were used but use any similar ones you have.

Being further inland in Farnborough we had some sow. It lasted all of 12 hours....LOL But it was lovely all the same. Full of romance, and unlived and unseen adventures. With the exception of kids enjoying every moment.
The painting is a wonderful representation of how I saw things years ago. We'd walk the dogs around bosies of water, all with these same tall grasses and reeds, and now and then when snow came, the scene was just like this, and the dogs were a nightmare to dry when we got home. Happy memories for sure.. Once. my sister, and our 5 cousins went out in the snow all together. It was near Farnham where out Gran and Grandad had lived, and we headed out across common land. The snow was about 2 foot deep, in a smooth blanket right to the horizon. In touched pure virgin snow as far as we could see. We stood an silence and awe aw the sight before us sunk in. I pretty short order screams of delight filled the air from the 7 cousins, all under 13 years old. And right out of an Enid Blyton store there was a mini stampede of kids running down a shallow hill as fast as was possible. Most of the memory of that days has dimmed with passing years, but for this one event. Yours truly, never being the fast on his feet type was trailing behind a bit, but just as eager as the others, and suddenly it all went really quiet, and the light levels had diminished a little. I'd disappeared into a 4 or 5 feet deep hole. Right out of sight of even the tallest of us, my 13 year old cousin. I don't rightly recall how long it took them to realise that I wasn't with them any more. But that had cut short one of the wildest adventures of our lives. Charles was charged with looking after the rest of us, and didn't allow anyone else vanishing in a deep hole.. It get really crowded around the log fire that afternoon. Where that outside adventure took place, a sprawling housing estate now sits, homing about 10,000 people.
I know my input wasn't really on subject, but I say to you and Morgaine frequently how truly thankful I am that you both help restore memories long since been buried in dust, and just such a memory was shared today. Thank you Lois. TTFN

Tried to follow. Failed because I am a beginner, but the end result was not all that bad. And it was , strangely enjoyable, and exceedingly instructive.

I always learn a lot from your paintings, but often I find myself slipping out of student mode to be swept away by the image itself as it develops, while your sensitive brush handling
encourages it into being. It's like watching a dance or listening to music. Your process of working is a work of art in itself.

We had really heavy snow during the early hours of Wednesday, here in Kent. It looked lovely for a few hours. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your circumstances lol) it had all been washed away by teatime from constant rain. Love the painting Lois, colours are lovely 😍

Thanks Lois, this is really beautiful and effective. I tried to paint a scene from a photo taken in Norfolk, with lovely soft reeds, recently and didn’t quite get the effect I was wanting. I had the idea of using salt for the fluffy reeds as they were my main focus, unlike yours, which was more about the trees in the background. It’s prompted me to have another go anyway. Your handling of the initial wash was very good! It’s so easy to lose control at that stage.

I live in the state of Maryland, in the US. We haven't had any snow either. I've been wanting to do a snowy field with a Redfox, in the distance. This is a beautiful inspiration. Thank you, Lois!!
