Adventure into the SNOW as an Australian Swagman / Victorian High Country

  • I Hike up into the ALPINE WILDERNESS for a Traditional Swagman Camp. I use a mixture of both modern and old gear while camping in the snow. This is a section of the Victorian High Country that is Remote and Harsh. The Australian Alps is an Adventurers Paradise and in the Winter can be Foreboding and Dangerous and Extreme. Tackling almost Impasable Winter Roads due to the Snow, I set off along a Mountain range and High Country Plain for some Wild Camping.
    Tim Chilman made this trip possible. He is a great bloke and a great musician, whose song 'Abandoned Frontier' features in this video. Check him out here: / @timchilman

    It's a fascinating experiment you have going on - and what you're learning from it. The terrain is so beautiful and challenging but I'm quite glad to be vewing your adventure from the comfort of home(!) Best of luck with the new channel. Look forward to tuning in. Enjoyed the video very much.

    New subscriber. I like your work. Thanks to you both for an interesting video up in the remote and harsh Victoria High Country - The Australia Alps. Brilliant! I loved the little shack - I hope there are more of them up there, they are likely a life-saver. They should keep some cut, dry firewood in them for emergencies.

      Thanks for watching mate. I'll be posting a video each week. This winter I plan to do some more snow camps up in the vicco high country. Most of the huts up there do have fire wood stored for people. This hut had to be the most rickety one I've come across. Thanks again for watching

    24:15 I’m thinking one of those tents in a tent hot tent with a metal stove , double insulation and warm brandy in my coffee, but I’m 70 , you young blokes well done, good job. 👍🇦🇺 what an experience that would, unforgettable. 👍 definitely with another person rather than a solo trip.

      I'd love to do a hot tent out in the snow. I think next snow camp I might bring just woolen blankets but maybe hike into a hut where I can keep a fire going all night.

    Great video and interesting to see Australian landscapes that don't get much attention internationally. I'm Canadian here but no winter camping expert although but I've done a bit. It's definitely harder to stay warm at +1 then -10C because the wet snow gets everything damp and just sucks the heat away! Often those tough experiences that make for great memories though.

      Very interesting to hear that mate. We can get the -10.c in our highest mountains. But where this was filmed it was about 1+c in the day and maybe -3.c at night. We did find every quite mushy and wet. Thanks for watching.

    You have to love the high country it is harsh can be dangerous it will test you to the limits of your endurance but it is awesome and I have been camping fishing and hunting in all the Vic Alpine Country since the late 60s and it's a place I love.

      Yeah high country is my new favourite spot. I used to be all about the coast, but I can't get enough of the high country .. I'll be doing a few more snow camps this winter.

    Okay....as someone who lives where we get over three feet of snow some years (that stays) why did you hamper yourself with snowshoes in two inches?

    • @TheBeardedBushranger
      @TheBeardedBushranger  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For the fun of it! Australia snow doesn't even compare with N.A or Europe snow .. fully awknowledge that. I found the old snow shoes and just loved them so much I wanted to get out there and try them out.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@TheBeardedBushranger that is a good enough reason indeed! I have a vintage pair of bear paws, a pair of British Army metal ones (that are quit small) and Canadian Army magnesium snowshoes myself.

      Yeah that's great. I'd love to get these out in some actual deep stuff, but it can be hard to get that here in Aus. usually it means traveling to out highest mountains which are ski resorts and you have to pay a ridiculous fee just to park your car.

    I don't think Canada is the old-school traditional swagman term people would use in Australia. It's like saying Pavalova originated from france. Big boots to fill there.

    • @TheBeardedBushranger
      @TheBeardedBushranger  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Say again? Are you saying that the term swagman came from Canada? Not quite sure what your meaning

    😆1800 swagman? What's with all the new generation gear?oh yes the famous 1800 jet boiler! Come do this in a real canadian winter. I thought you were going to go hard as the title mentioned, like an 1800 caaaant. It was for the looks than anything else.

    • @TheBeardedBushranger
      @TheBeardedBushranger  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I like mixing it up with a combination of old and new. Totally admit this was not a hardcore trip and was more a fun experiment. This was one of my first swagman trips I did a while back and reuploaded the vid to this new channel. I've got other vids up where I take only 1800s gear, and will be posting more vids of camps I've done with only old gear in future vids. So stay tuned for that.
      Thanks for watching!

      Also Australian snow can't even compare to Canada .. But this was still one of my favourite camps and I had a heap of fun mucking around .. sorry it dissapointed ya .. I've changed the thumbnail so others don't get confused / misinterpret of what I'm trying to do here. But it's only good vibes here.
      Have a good day.
