Y GARN | A Solo Mountain Climb | Snowdonia National Park

- Come along with me on a solo climb of Y Garn, the 10th highest mountain in Wales, along this beautiful 5 mile circular hike ascending via Devil's Kitchen. The views from the 947m summit were spectacular back to Llyn Idwal & the beautiful Ogwen Valley. I parked in the lay-by about a mile away from the Ogwen Cottage Visitor Centre as the closer car parks were all full before 9am on the Sunday I completed this walk (I'd advise arriving early to get a space in these car parks as it saves the additional 1-2 miles of walking at the start & end of the day). It took me just under 5 hours to complete the walk & it is one of my favourite walks to date that I've completed in Wales, would really recommend!
As always, I hope you enjoy this video and thank you so much for watching!

Beautiful video, definitely the weather Gods we’re on your side 😊. 👌
Thank you Ranbir - I got very lucky that weekend with the weather for sure! Lovely to hear you enjoyed the video 😊
Beautiful area to walk, never ceases to amaze me that even on the busiest days in Snowdonia National Park there’s still lovely lonely walks to find.
Exactly, it’s just choosing wisely - I was expecting crowds on the walk given the number of cars but I was pleasantly surprised with how quiet it was! Thanks for watching 💛
Thank you once again for this. Always to try to trace it on the OS map as you describe it. Another one for the "to do" list.
Thanks Angus - pleased you enjoyed this one too 🙂 Good point, I try and detail where I park in the video descriptions but I'm working on sharing my routes on a blog in the future so I hope that will be helpful in the future!
I agree good to see the peaks from Y Garn Christine. A bit hazy the views nowadays but that's our planet right now. None the less a great couple of days you've had. Ha, I don't think we can overdose on beauty can we? Yeah, a wonderful walk. Mark
Yes exactly, it’s a great spot for wide ranging views across Snowdonia - as you say incredibly sad about the persistent haziness but I was grateful for the visibility I had nevertheless. Thanks Mark - pleased you enjoyed 😊
@@shefreelyroams It sure is a good spot Christine. This haziness is here to stay I'd say - some clearer days than others. A pleasure.
@@WyeExplorer sadly so, feels irreversible at this point. Have a good weekend Mark, take care.
@@shefreelyroams Yeah, big changes across the planet Christine. I will have a good one. You to. Peace.
Great video, i have done that route but the other way around, i always solo hike myself, i find it safer as i don't have to think about others safety, just mine and i can concentrate on enjoying the mountains ☺and Y Garn is always fairly quiet too 😃can't wait to go back again.
Yes a lot of people seem to do it the other way round to avoid ascending via Devil's Kitchen, will have to try it that way next time I do it! Couldn't agree more, you can go at your own pace - it's great 🙌🏻
I do love the Devils kitchen climb though, awesome views of Pen Yr Ole Wen. solo is better, just stay safe and enjoy the mountains @@shefreelyroams 😊
Another beautiful video Christine! Ive seen maybe a similar route on one or two other youtube clips but your enthusiasm and enjoyment when you get to the tops and see the views is a joy to watch. I scrambled up the back of Tryfan last year (didnt fancy the North Ridge) and we got brilliant views of the your walk. Definately one for the to do list! Thankyou 🙂
Thank you Tony - that's genuinely so lovely to hear that you're enjoying the videos 🙂💛 Yet to attempt Tryfan, how did you find it? I've heard a few horror stories but mostly people enjoy the challenge of it! Definitely on my to do list! But yes, this one is up there as one of my favourite walks to date in Wales - beautiful route 🙌
@@shefreelyroams I thoroughly enjoyed the route round the back of Tryfan Christine. Quite a good path most of the way then the scramble to the top any way you can! My kids did the North Ridge and we met at the top roughly at the same time. They enjoyed their scramble too but found it challenging in places. Fabulous views all round 🙂
@@tonypilki3 aw sounds like a perfect day out all around! I’m really looking forward to tackling Tryfan one day soon - thanks for the advice 🫶🏻😊
Dear Christine,
thank you for the beautiful video and the beautiful music 🎶😊 in the background. I have already noticed on some hikes that you can see the destination and the way back very well. For the most part, the trees are missing🌳 That's why the landscape looks so extensive. I can well imagine that the distance is then deceptive and you think it's not so far 😊 I
'm looking forward to your next video 👍🏻
Kind regards Gerold
Thank you Gerold for tagging along again on this one, pleased you enjoyed it 🙂 yes good spot, I think the good conditions I've had on walks recently has helped but yes for the most part, very few trees. I can confirm that it is most definitely deceptive though as it's quite some distance!
Wow, fantastic views from a good height 👌.....top notch..another lovely video Christine 👍
Thanks Tommo 💛 it was such a good spot for viewing Snowdonia at the top, incredible! Pleased you enjoyed this one too 🙌🏻
Wow, breathtaking solo adventure my friend! This looks and feels amazing!
It was a great solo adventure - loved it! Thanks Ervin, so pleased you’re enjoying these 💛📸
Thank you for sharing your day hike!!!
Thank you for tagging along! Hope you enjoyed 😊
I love it there Llyn idwal all the ogwen valley is special . I normally call in from capel curig. Have you been to the infinity pool ? At the back of fawr
It’s an awesome place isn’t it?! I love it there too 🫶🏻 and no I haven’t yet, is it worth a visit?!
This was my first climb in Snowdonia on Christmas Eve last year. Love it!
Loved it too! Imagine it was so nice & quiet on Christmas Eve - it’s a great circular 🙌🏻
Another favourite mountain. Amazing viewpoint. Suggest it's a better walk in reverse. The objective is better seen and the descent via DK gives you the classic view of Idwal. But a memorable day either way.
Exactly, it’s a great climb with excellent views at the top! Fair point - I quite enjoyed the climb up devils kitchen & the views down on the descent to Ogwen Valley but next time, I’ll definitely try the other way round as can always appreciate different things on the reverse!
This is my favourite hike in Snowdonia. I did it last August and had the same weather as yourself. The heather was in full bloom which was beautiful. I found the initial descent section very challenging since it's so loose underfoot but I sat down for that part which made it much more manageable 😊
Aw yes Nicola, this is one of my faves to date too! I’d love to do it again in August with all the heathers on display as imagine that’s spectacular. Definitely a slow & steady climb as you say, it was really muggy when I did it so took a few pit stops along the way too! Did you ascend the same way as me via devils kitchen? Pleased you enjoyed this one too 💛🫶🏻
Yes. I ascended via Devil's Kitchen. I found the descent (the same descent you took) more challening than Devil's Kitchen since it was sooo steep and loose underfoot. A bit scary in places. I'd like to do the Glyders soon 😊
@@niclrig yes I agree with you - not the most enjoyable & very draining as constantly having to look down at the ground! Glad I wasn’t the only one feeling that way! & yes Glyders looks like great fun - on my bucket list too 🤞🏻😊
Hi Christine. I am planning on doing this walk in a couple of weeks while we are in Snowdonia but I do suffer with vertigo, how bad are the scrambles. I don't mind turning around like I did at striding edge 😂 thx
Hi Chris, definitely nothing exposed on the scramble up Devil's Kitchen, it is more the descent on scree that unsettled me a little bit and required concentration as quite steep, again not exposed so I'd say you should be alright - everyone is different though! Hope that is somewhat helpful 😊
