    I lived in Phuket for two years after my retirement...it was forced on me as my wife told me she wanted a divorce. It was a premeditated move on her behalf. Anyway...I left for Phuket to try and pick the pieces up, and to also move far away from the 'ground hog day' exsistance I was living. My friends had suddenly become old, boaring and predictable. My new life in Phuket gave me a chance to get re born again. I was happy again, I met new friends and did things that made me happy and not other people happy! I leave soon to live in the Philippines, another opportunity to further enrich my life!

      Nice! I’m familiar w Thailand but have yet to visit the Philippines, although it seems really lovely too! Esp Siargao. What is it about these places that makes people feel that sense of freedom? Or is it because we’re so far away from home and the society we grew up in? All the best for the Philippines!

    • @cletushatfield8817
      @cletushatfield8817 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JeanVoronkova I've given some thought to that freedom question as it's been a primary driving force for the time I've spent abroad. I think that part of the difference is that I usually don't speak the same language (certainly not to the extent as my native English) as the place I'm passing through. The realization of a certain anonymity within the host culture has also had a liberating effect, despite standing out the way I do. Beyond language and anonymity the distance from my own society seems to remove the familiar constraints or chains of decorum or expectations, what have you. Yes, there are new constructs in place, but somehow they feel less confining perhaps because they are temporary or easily changed by moving. I think the biggest factor is that my goals, my purpose, my expectations for myself aren't near as ambitious and are more immediately endorphin releasing, e.g. exploring, new cuisine, historical sites, etc. I would argue that this is more the natural state of being human, i.e. traveling to new lands. If we didn't have this impulse we might have just stayed in Africa which clearly had everything necessary for an otherwise good life (for the evolutionary types). I don't know, I could probably go on.

      hey yu, thank u for leaving this note and sharing your personal story. Second degree is a big feat and very admirable cos academics are definitely not the easiest. The crisis u mentioned i hope isn't directly related to the subject matter of both degrees... otherwise that can feel particularly challenging personally. n if its any help, sometimes studying the subject and actual working practice can feel really different. I loved studying law in last 2 years in sch actually it was inspiring and made me feel like i was learning important lifechanging skills... but actual practice... meh. But if you're not liking what you're studying, there must hv been some reason why u chose it in the first place, n maybe the work experience might fit u better?

    This is so helpful. I loved my work until around 2015 and since then find it is to use your expression 'crushing my soul'. We have seasons in life I think. I've come to this realisation in my 40s, but also realise it is never too late to make a change. I definitely want to transition to doing something very different, despite being naturally risk averse. I am a lawyer - not a corporate lawyer - but worked with many and saw the misery and grind on the face of so many partners who had spend 20 years working 80 hour weeks but felt trapped by the wealth and trappings and status of the role (and some who indeed thrived on it and loved it).

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seasons in life is a really good way to see things. I too agree. Sometimes we reach that winter period but after that spring always arrives. Law def works for some people! But the sad reality is a lot of people enter into this track under false expectations and impressions and then feel they’ve invested too much by then to pull out.

    You said it! I left my corporate job, being a work martyr and while there were some clear advantages to that lifestyle -- a recurring salary, the opportunity to travel, socializing with coworkers, the odd expensive partner dinner -- looking back I was on a wheel trying to run with everyone else. It's the expectation yeah? Shame if you think differently. It hasn't been easy. Most of work related relationships I thought were real weren't. But I've managed to rethink who I want to spend time with, and think less about transactional relationships. It's a journey! We should all have the chance to just live as we please.

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey bob, thanks for the lil note. A lot of what you said resonated with me. Transactional relationships in particular. That's a very good way to describe the relationships i had in my former corporate roles. and you were right, whilst i thought there were real friendship ties forming, after leaving, it became clear that everything had a political purpose attached to it by the colleagues i thought i was close to. Sad. But on the other hand, extremely thankful i'm off the wheel and walking my own path in life. I'm sure life after the job has been good to you. Most people who have left seem only to be so elated that they did, even if monetarily they live on less than before. Life's riches are not only financial, that's the sure thing.

    You and I are quite similar (well, I guess most people go through the same process of asking questions and realisation, etc.). I completely second your message here as I experienced it myself and I think I've successfully transitioned my life too. The first most important step in my opinion is to 'TALK TO YOURSELF'. Surprisingly, many people don't because they are either too busy, too scared to talk to themselves because they don't want to face the harsh reality that they hate what they've been doing/situation they have been in for 10, 20 years.
    Thank you for another great video:)

      Hey there! So strange i think i replied your msg previously but it seems to have disappeared. I totally agree. Admitting stuff to oneself can be difficult. Self judgment and self criticism is often the harshest. Stuff like "how did u let things get to this point etc etc." I did that once with a scary breast lump I found and promptly ignored for 6 months. Luckily it was benign in the end upon biopsy. But you get my drift. Thank you for watching the video and i'm happy the msg resonated with you. Cheers to a life well lived.

    👍👍 Very good thoughts. You are definitely one of the fortunate ones to have set yourself free early in life. For those like myself, it took many more years, careers, mistakes and hard work before the chains fell away. One perspective that find super-useful is to realize that up until very recently, nearly all humans were too busy trying to get their basic needs met, fighting wars, famines, pandemics, etc., to even think about becoming a happier, better person. Leisure time was minimal and those who were fortunate enough to have some rarely used it wisely. But humans have succeeded in ways no one thought possible for hundreds of thousands of years. Now we have free time, and so many choices. But we are not equipped for such blessings. Many people burn countless hours on social media, video games, and other distractions that subtract from health and happiness. It's no wonder there's so many people frustrated, angry and grasping anything or anyone to provide them with a sense of purpose even if their placebo is clearly harmful to themselves and to those around them. It's an incredible time to be alive- but the unanswered question is, "Can humanity survive the new era of fewer norms, much more free time, and countless new options?"

      @JeanVoronkova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeff, thank you for this detailed message. U articulated many thoughts that have been circulating in my own mind for a while! Esp the second part of your msg. More than ever we r being inundated from every angle with SM trash essentially, and it’s all to distract us from the real issues that require our attention, to keep us circulating within The System and subject to it cos we’re too risk averse and/or unmotivated to break through the comfort zone to reach for what is truly valuable, and the irony is yes this is the age of golden opportunities where more things r possible than every before in this tech revolution.

    Thank you for sharing your narrative and those three great questions to explore. I had glorified being a librarian and was working in a public library setting, I was excited and passionate about my job. Yet, I was discriminated against because of my disability and gay identities. Ironically, the company has institutional barriers of access to services for the public it serves. I tried to be more customer service oriented and going above and beyond my job. I was told that "don't work so hard and help people too much, then the public will expect us to be helpful like you". It was a toxic work environment and I was being reprimanded or watched for any mistake regardless if it was a mistake worthy of mention or something petty that anyone can mess up that no other co worker got reprimanded for. And, now here I am feeling confused and trying to explore other narratives for myself. Keep being you and spreading your story it helps others to be brave and to share their vulnerability as well.

The goal post will shift when they become "successful" and start the chase again. But when I see you, you seemed very much at peace with yourself and enjoying your life. I happen to think that's successful. To others maybe not. But it shouldn't matter. Only what you feel matters.

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i love your note. thanks Terubong. I didn't post it here, but i did a podcast interview on something called the Urban Exodus that came out 2 weeks back. And actually, in the course of the interview, the lady interviewer asked me so what are my goals, how do i see my life 5 or 10 years from now.... and my mind was just - gosh, exactly the same as how it is now if V & I can swing it. So i said just that. And promptly spent the next few days agonizing over how unambitious i sound and perhaps ... naive and underachieving? U know what i mean. The common perception that life must keep moving on n get better etc. I mean i hope i will be a more accomplished surfer, a better painter (esp portraits) , that all my life relationships will be healthy and thriving, that our garden will grow better plants n fruits etc (haha) but basically the picture of my life now is pretty much it. For me, mentally, anyway. Im happy and content. It's enough. But it was so funny to say that out loud and the lady sounded v surprised also n then i promptly felt very inadequate. lol. I think u'll understand what i;m saying.

    • @terubong
      @terubong 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeanVoronkova I fully understand. But I'm laughing at you agonizing over what you said. No its not underachieving, as long as you are happy and contented. But I've always been an rather aberrant character (could be considered a bad influence haha) so if I'm that lady I won't be surprised. I would have been impressed! Its like a monk having achieved the enlightenment but at such a young age. Life is already perfect, thus 5/10 years from now life will be the same with a slight difference. And that is, you're doing whatever you do in your current state in a much more accomplished manner. Surfing, painting, deeper relationships, maybe your self sustaining permaculture garden will keep you very healthy. And one more thing, confidence. Self confidence.

    Watching your video with perfect timing. I've been hospitalized with an autoimmune disease that I caused myself because I have been trying to work FT & build 2 companies at the same time with the result of not getting anything accomplished and what could be a life threatening illness. If I don't change and JUST pursue what makes me happy then my time here could come to a close or my quality of life good dwindle significantly. I've been very positive through this applying "Laughter is the Best Medicine" and being supportive of my Dr's. and nurses.

    Happiness and contentment of each person is totally different... Accidentally found ur channel which had me thinking that we're on the same boat. I had quit this crazy system that created by the society two years ago and I feel super content until now... Let's enjoy slowness and live life mindfully. Please share the tips on how to live and guide a partner who stucks in fast-paced living caused of the pressure of working on 9-5. Which caused her having anxiety and depression... I tried everyday to help her to be present, she said that her anxiety is better but the depression still hard to control... Thankyou, appreciate ur sharing! 🙏🥰

Both my head and my heart tell me to leave, but yet I have no idea what to do next. I have hobbies to fill my days but ultimately I want to find meaningful endeavors that make me feel *useful* in my "retirement". And I have no idea how to go about it.

    We should actually instead ask ourself what we really want in life.

      It’s hard to move past what everyone around us in Singapore expects though, it’s like being encased in a strong jelly lol. Asian society lah. And in singapore the thought process is so uniform. N options are actually very limited. I am thankful I left Sg to work n explore overseas because that really opened my eyes to possibilities. When I lived n worked in SG I felt that my choices were very limited n narrow.

    I believe that everyone has the potential to be amazing. Sadly, we are almost all caged by our own minds being manipulated by our surroundings. We just need to let it come out. Sometimes that requires a traumatic (acute) event, or just being tired of the grind (chronic).
    Thanks for sharing yourself, helping other to see the possibilities, and providing possible action pathways. ❤

Now in his retirement he is the most amazing cook, baker, and he does amazing work with his hands whatever he decides to fix around the house or grow in the garden. Like you said, it just needs an opportunity to come out. i hope you are out there yourself living out your dream life visions!

At least now you already understand it is toxic for you. Its a good first step. I wish you luck in working towards a better situation that works for you not against you. Take care of yourself please, its the first thing you need to do before you take care of the others around you.

    I left my job 5 years ago when it wasn't "mainstream" because I had already realised it wasn't worth being a wage slave. I travelled around the world with the savings I had, trying to look for my purpose, which I didn't despite meeting so many people and doing so many things. I was so happy and positive, believed in the law of attraction and kept looking for my purpose in vain.
    On top of that my dad couldn't stand me doing what I was doing and hijacked my life twice, I had to go back to being a wage slave two times because he never supported my will of freedom which made me a procrastinator and lose all confidence in me. I know it's easy to blame it on him but when you have someone on your back 24/7 telling you that the life you want is a useless dream you kind of start being depressed and give up.
    Like, what you say in your videos is true but at the end of the day, I still had to work to make money to pay for student loan, my food, my house. I was lucky enough to still live with my parents but the harsh reality is that you can't live this life of freedom that you advertize for without a proper income. Becoming a youtuber and looking for sponsors isnt really the life I want to have. So idk for me this video didn't really help and didn't really give a lot of concrete and real examples that don't try to sell skillshare subs.
    If you really want freedom, you either need to make your own small company or work part time, but you absolutely need an income and it won't come without some kind of work. IDK I've watched so many videos like this and none of them truly help you cause in the end everyone is different and will have different situations and needs and we are the only ones who can help ourselves.

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi SakuraChan, thank you for your comment. I fully agree with what you said, and actually from your comment, I like you as a person already. You sound young but very discerning and smart, and i'm sure you will have a lot going for you with time. Please don't get the wrong picture with my story. In between quitting my corporate job and living my dream life now in Bali, it's been almost 10 years. Lasting, positive changes resulting from action and hard work takes time. That's the msg I really want to put across - i really need to do a video explaining all the details don't i - because you're not the only person who's watched and made certain mistaken conclusions. I am doing YT now because its a creative passion for me and my husband - him the cinematographer, and me the person with stories to tell. There's extra income coming from it which is always a great thing, but we only really got some traction AFTER we moved to Bali. BUT we managed to move to Bali in the first place because after my realisations in the I Quit video, I bascially went around doing many different free lance jobs and starting 4 diff businesses, the last of which was w my hubs n was successful, and we lived frugally for some years and saved money for investing to get a target level of income. We finally succeeded with this during the pnademic, and thats why we managed to move to Bali. So we have several income streams. But YT is not what i turned to after quitting and i wouldn't advise it for anyone because its a lot of hard work and time and there's no guarantee of success or the amount you wanna make. You need to work yes, but you need to work smart and do smtg that generates income SEPARATE from your hours put in eventually. But yes, you are the only one who can help you. That's a great starting point you are at already.

I’m sure your current life now in Bandung is colourful and enjoyable. I think the Indonesians r so much more clued in on life’s simple joys than most Singaporeans.

      @@JeanVoronkova Bandung is not bad though I prefer the beach to mountains. Not ideal but I'm similarly thankful for the affordable goodness such as organic vege, massages, staycations. You should try hair spa - it's very Indonesian, almost every salon in the country would offer that at affordable prices! Spot on about Indonesians being contented with simple living. Many of them told me they could choose to take a break from their jobs and survive on their garden produce in kampungs.

      @@munafibolong i do see it being offered here in Bali but you know, how to choose which salon is too complex a puzzle for me to go solve. it's like going to Donki Donki in SG. I love it but i never buy anything out of decision paralysis. But i do need a hair spa haha. Ive actually met quite a number of people who are working in Jakarta now but buying land etc in Bali and moving over for a simpler life.... or so that their kids can grow up in nature. i'm so impressed.

    I am trying to find out how to create a passive income. I just can't live the ratrace. Never could, the struggle led to me veing on welfare. Feeling so rich and all the time, but not enough money to spend besides housing and food. So .....time I have......money for housing eating and bills.......how to create more financial resources?

    I studied a career that's not selling right now because of political and pandemic crisis, which is Tourism Management. I live in Nicaragua . Because the touristic activity is currently low I've had to do other alternative jobs like teaching English and interpreting. After more than 10 years teaching I got burn out and quit to start a new job as a medical interpreter. This last one was the most stressful and exhausting job I've ever had because my boss demanded that I spent most of the time working , a full-time job as an interpreter making 500 hundred minutes of interpreting every single day. I got sick 😷🤢 several times in less than a month, I woke up at 3 am thinking about having to get ready for one more day of work, like a sheep that goes right to the butcher.I felt happy on Fridays for starting my weekend vacation, felt worried 9n Saturday, and anxious on Sunday and dreaded on Monday. So finally I thank my boss for the opportunity but I had to quit because it was having repercussions on my health and well being.Now I'm here writing this commentary, I have no job , I feel infinitely better after quitting but I don't have money 💰 to pay my bills, that's my problem . I watched the video because now I have enough time to find my purpose. If I had to answer the questions from the video to help me find my purpose I already know what I'd like to do , I love creating art, love painting , love creating things with my hands. I love fishing and outdoor activities, meeting new people and make them feel good so I think that I can create something that makes them experience emotions like a painting they can relate with. If you ever read this commentary what advice would you give me? , I'd be more than happy to hear a good recommendation considering my location, by the way I'm from Granada.

      hi Bernardo, thank you for sharing your story in so much detail here with all of us. Sorry to hear you had such bad experiences out there working so many different jobs as well. It doesn't sound like you like any of them much which is very unfortunate. I have spent the last decade since quitting pursuing my true interests and passion and its actually worked out financially for me as well as allowing me to enjoy work instead of dreading it every day. this evening's video is about that and my path to retirement about 8 years on from quitting - maybe that'll be of interest to you and give you some ideas. ...
