This was incredibly helpful. I watched first to convince myself i could do it, and then I watched step by step while completing the project. I believe all previous parts were from 2002. I think everything was ready to break, and I'm glad to have replaced everything.

This video was so helpful! I am a widowed single mom and your easy to follow step-by-step directions were exactly what I needed to fix my master bathroom toilet! I felt so overwhelmed and lost when I realized it needed to be fixed and I didn’t want to spend the $ to hire a "handyman" for a job my late husband would normally do. Thank you so much!!

Kris….THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I’m 73 and my husband is 80. Watching your video, we went step by step (starting and stopping the video), but we got ‘er done! And even knowing what to purchase was a huge help. First trip to Home Depot (pre-video) had me staring at so many different parts that I had no idea where to begin! I put off actually replacing the innards for 3 days after I bought the parts; however, the dread of tackling it was the hard part. But once we started…all good. Now wish I had done it 3 days earlier and had it off my plate.

    Kris-
Thank you so much for this video. I had contacted a plumber to look at my toilet that was hissing and condensation was building up on the lid. He told me I needed a brand-new toilet for $1200, or he could re-build the one I had for $800. I could not afford either. I had asked for the least expensive solution- and this was his answer. So, I took to you tube and found your video. I went to Lowes, bought the $30 Kit (fill valve, flush valve, handle (which I didn't need), bolts, washers, TOOLS & the plastic packaging acted as a bucket!!) I followed your video ( & the instruction booklet that came with the kit) and with the help of my daughter WE replaced everything in the toilet and it's working great! We fixed it for $30 with your help!!!

The instructions were spot on. Never done anything like this, followed it to the letter, toilet is working perfectly and no sign of any leaks. The only thing I can suggest to other users: when you get ready to loosen the tank-to-bowl bolts, have a container right underneath the first bolt; that excess water will seep out. Otherwise, this is everything you need to know.

Thank you!! I have an old Mansfield toilet and didn't know it till I saw your video, mine is so old (date says 1986) that the Mansfield ink stamp in the tank disappeared. All I knew is that my flush valve and fill valve looked very different from the ones in other videos that I saw. Your videos on replacing the Mansfield tank apparatus are a godsend.

Well I’m about to begin to install the new inners to this very old toilet. We’re talking 30 years old! I ordered a kit from a Mansfield supply and it is the exact pieces to completely replace all the parts. Cost about the same as if I had purchased each piece individually and it’s original Mansfield parts. I’m a little nervous but you explain things so clearly and precisely that I think this 68 year old woman can get the job done! Your video is the best one I have seen. Thank you!

    • @evren0328

Well I did it! While I was at it I removed the toilet too and cleaned it up with a new wax ring and scraped off that old one. I followed your instructions to rebuild the inside of the tank and that wasn’t too difficult to do seeing that your instructions were so clear. I did have a problem with a small leakage tank to bowl. I placed a paper towel beneath where the tank and toilet meet and flushed several times. While there was no actual dripping of water the paper was wet so I knew I had to fix that. I could only finger tight the bolts so much. With the Mansfield kit they use a plastic nut to secure the tank to the bowl. I had to buy a socket wrench to tighten the nuts. I am now paper towel dry and flushing away!! 🎉 It was a bit of work for me because I decided to remove the toilet too but as you said the key was to take your time and I saved more than $500. Thanks again!

BTW one way I've found to get rid of the water left in the tank is with a turkey baster.

Thanks Kris for the detailed video, very nice job. I regret pointing this out but feel I must to help people better understand. This video shows a Mansfield #160 tank which uses a #211 flush valve and that is what Kris removed. The #211 valve provides a 1.6 gallon flush. The replacement valve shown is a #210 valve which is used on a different model of Mansfield tank that was used with older styles of toilet bowls that required more water to flush properly. It provides a 3.5 gallon flush. Take notice at the end of the video went the toilet is flushed the water level in the tank goes down to the near the bottom using all the water that’s in the tank which is a 3.5 gallon flush. With the correct #211 valve the water in the tank would go down about halfway which is a 1.6 gallon flush. The toilet bowl that’s matched with the #160 tank is designed to flush with 1.6 gallon so wasting 2 gallons per flush is not necessary. I have never seen a #211 valve in a hardware or big box store, seems like they have to be ordered online. I have two of these toilets and I have learned that only original Mansfield parts should be used because after market parts often fail prematurely particularly the red rubber flush valve seal rings.

I didn’t mention it but I do use the Fluidmaster fill valve, it’s the best fill valve available. Fluidmaster recently came out with the 400H PerforMAX. It has an adjustable valve on it for the water that goes through the tube that fills the bowl so it can be set to where it puts the correct amount of water into the bowl without over filling it. When too must water fills into the bowl the additional water just overflows the trap and goes down the drain which is wasted water every flush. This is what the 400A does and all other fill valves that I have seen. I just replaced the popular 400A valves with this newer 400H on my two toilets. There’s a procedure to determine the correct water level in the bowl and mark it then make the adjustments on the fill valve until you get it just right. The only store around me that has this new #400H valve is that orange big box store.

Thank you for adding this extra information, Curtis...you're absolutely right. It is very important to get the correct replacement parts for the tank you have, and we always recommend using genuine Mansfield replacement parts to ensure proper performance and longevity after the repair. Our customer service team is always available to help diagnose problems, identify models, make recommendations and point people in the right direction (1-877-850-3060). Mansfield replacement parts are available through many online outlets, but also in-store at Menards and most True Value, ACE and Do-It-Best retailers near you. Well-done video, Kris!

Just fyi the red rubber ring fails even with original mansfield parts if you use bleach tablets in the tank. I'm testing some different ones to see if they will last longer with bleach tablets currently but it's still too early to know how long they will last.

Hi Kris, thank you for the great video. When our toilet stopped flushing I told my wife to call the landlord. I am working very long hours right now and knew I would have very minimal time to spend trying to get it fixed. She was persistent and said he makes it look so easy. So dreadfully, I said ok, knowing I would it up having to spend time I did not have working on this project when it could have been done for us. Other than having to cut the screws (they were rusted) and some very minimal tightening and loosening, my wife did everything. Low and behold she comes out saying that it flushes and there is no more leaking on the inside due to a bad flush valve. Two thumbs up, great vid, very easy to follow. Thank you.

Thanks so much for this video. I have an oooold Mansfield toilet that ran constantly. I wasn't sure where the leak was coming from and decided to just replace everything. I was a bit intimidated but your video made it very straightforward. I especially like that you included what to buy and recommended the tank to bowl kit. The gasket on mine was nearly unrecognizable and all of the washers on the bolts were rotted. I followed the video step by step and my toilet flushes perfectly. No leaks. Don't know what this would cost if I hired a plumber, but it cost me $35 and an hour of my time. Thanks again.

Excellent video! We have 3 Mansfield 160s (Drees Homes new construction) that are 8 years old and are getting hard to flush with the handles. One was getting really bad. I purchased a Mansfield Kit from Grigg Industries and they provided a Mansfield 08 Anti-siphon ball cock and Watersaver 211ULF flush valve. Slightly different than your parts but go in basically the same. No adjustments necessary. I took apart and installed per your video and it works! Thanks much for this video. Gutted out 16 yo Mansfield and replaced all parts. It's be trickle running for longer than I care to mention.
Two issues: Not enough gloves, but a box of gloves has gone from 7.99 to 19.99, or more, because of Covid. Second, the plastic nut, for the valve, was seized. I had to cut that wawa to extract the valve.
Most i.port: No injuries and limited cussing. I hate plumbing duty.

@@theXchange Hi Kris, the replacement went fine - no leaks first time! :-) The only hitch I ran into was that the circular lock nut threads were stuck to the old flush valve, so when I tried to loosen it the whole valve turned with it. I couldn't get a good enough grip on the valve to keep it from turning. I had to carefully hacksaw the inside of the flush valve and take it out in pieces with some pliers. The lock nut sustained minimal damage and was reusable. Thanks again for a great video. You saved me a lot of $$.

Fantastic video. I purchase the repair kit from Mansfield for 3 times the price because I wanted to make sure everything worked perfectly. The guts look identical so if I were to do it again I would go with the Everbuilt. The one thing I was not to impressed with in the Mansfield kit was the Smartconnect system for the 3 bolts which hold the tank to the toilet. It seems far more prone to leak. I think the original version bolts in the Everbuilt kit work better. Unfortunately I could not reuse my old ones as they were so rusted the nuts were a bitch to get off.
Having your video walk me through it was very reassuring. Cheers.

Due to the amount of positive comments received over the years relative to how my videos have given confidence to people to tackle this themselves and feel the gratification in saving a couple hundred bucks let alone the pride in fixing something for yourself, I’ve looked for ways to continue to do just that. It’s been nice to see videos like these in the early days of Covid, for example, help people in apartments who could not get a maintenance call fulfilled because the apartment complex suspended non-emergency repairs. It’s still hard to find the time to create videos, most of which are opportunistic. Beyond that, life is much the same! Same house, same toilet with the same innards used in this video! 😃
