I am also a huge sucker for storylines. Whenever commentators talk about the players and the history between them a bit before the set gets me roped in and more invested. ❤
I do like the more bombastic commentary from people like toph, coney, hbox, TK, etc. It brings an energy that I think you only ever get in grassroots esports. Then again, I think it's great to have such a mixed bag of commentators, it brings freshness and stops it from feeling stale one way or another.
Smash(especially ultimate) is so big that and the nature of smash not being supported by Nintendo is what results in that little symptom of "this guy knows nothing" because it's so big and popular and there will be so many events that is inevitable. In my opinion, the game and community with the best commentary is marvel vs capcom. You have the clean cut professional style you'd see at evo. And you have IFCyipes, Tong and his crew over at TNS and majority of commentators in the MAHVEL scene is so good(im my opinion)
I love the clean calm commentary style because it lets the game speak for itself while also letting a casual viewer like myself digest the more complex interactions. Old school play by play comms get old fast if you aren't an all time great at it like HMW imo. Personally feel like commentary is in a really good place right now
Why not? They are valid concerns and criticism but I do think they don't matter in the long run so long as the "goal" of the commentary is fulfilled, like I said in the video.
feel like the majority of people's issues with melee commentary at the moment (i.e reddit burnout posts) is from Jorge screaming and crying on the mic. pretty funny you made an entire video on commentary and didn't bring up the most egregious offender ha
@@DaCapybara yeh but doesn’t help the issue either, people have been complaining about Jorge forever and nothing has changed. Highlighting Walt’s “golf” style commentary and not Jorge is bizarre to me.
i dont like yungwaff. Probably just the way he talks like he just wants to go home, i dont think the things he say are that bad, but he talks like hes just doing it cause he has to. Not that i extremely hate his commentary, i just dont find it entertaining
Hes got a relaxed vibe for sure. Probably comes from being super comfortable behind the mic. I definitely don't think he is apathetic but I do see how it could come across that way.

Agreed, both styles bring a lot to the table especially when paired together!
I wish Smash commentary was as good as melee commentary
I wonder if melee commentary has just had a longer time to develop? The difference between the two is interesting 🤔

Oh! I'll have to check out some Marvel V Capcom

Very good point!
yeah that riptide set was incredible, probably the best of 2024 so far
True. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. We are in a mid tier renaissance.
you can’t say something is a valid concern, and then immediately say it doesn’t matter in the long run afterwards

you've got a great presence on camera for a channel of your size. bound to blow up if you keep it up!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words :)

I'm not naming names 😜

@@kevinaiken3373 I thought I did hit that style with the Wombo Combo/Walk Up Down Smash clips. Perhaps I could've been more clear.

But also, as a wise person once said “D1 and Prog are not good commentators”.
We do not speak of those that shall not be named 😂
