  • Walker, a folky song by James De Le North. James was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne and grew up in the district of Walker. This song reflects James' experiences and memories of Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne as a child in the 1970s. You might notice in the video the Railway pub, located strictly speaking in Walkerville. Walkerville bordered Walker, James's grandad was the manager of that pub, so we featured a shot of it in the video. Dedicated to the memory of Neil Laidler.

Came across this by chance. My maternal grandparents lived in Sutton Dwellings then moved into a 3 bedroom house on The Fosseway. My grandad was a miner at the Rising Sun colliery. He died 1970 when I was 10. He died not long after retirement. He's buried in Walker churchyard. As is my Nana who died in 1981. This song brought back memories. ❤

Thank you. James is writing more songs about the region. And they're starting to sound really good.

Just discovered this song. Love it. I was taken aback to see Neil Laidler mentioned. If it’s the same Neil I knew he was killed in 1977 after leaping the barrier outside Walker park opposite the dwellings where he and his family lived, as did mine. As to Michael70, I have known much worse hellholes and have never met such generous and wonderful people.

Totally agree I lived in the dwellings as a kid ..the people were very poor as we're we but had happy childhood and the people would share what little they had and do anything for you ..didn't need to lock your doors in them days.. .

My grandad worked on the ship yards we lived across from Eric Burdon’s mum. My mum grew up with Eric. Hated the smell of the bone yard in the sixties. Had a great child hood on Kentmere Avenue.

Sure is... I see social comparisons between Walker and some of the downtown districts of the USA, where many ghetto and Missippi Delta artists were inspired to produce some amazing blues songs.

Walker was a bustling community I'm proud to hail from there . When the Shipyards closed it tore out the heart and Soul.
