Newcastle's "Worst" Street 🏴

- My trip to Birmingham had me depressed about the state of the country. It seemed like most people have accepted that the cities in England are now cesspits, full of rubbish, hardcore D*ug use and segregated living.
I decided to take a trip to Newcastle to see if there is any hope for English cities in 2024.
Disclaimer: It was bank holiday easter Friday so it was quiet out. Plus the metro was closed for works, scuppering my plans. I'll go back in the summer for another look.
I like how the guy in the pub went from a loud drunk, or radgie as the Geordies would say, into delivering very sensible and level headed advice about navigating through life haha
The coke had kicked in by then
No hes salt of the earth you dont know him @coricameron2593
@mutts.nutts1 people are quick to judge with only seeing a snippet of that person, he seems like a good enough lad abit rough around the edges but his heart is in the right place and that's all that counts.
Should try these unsavoury places when its dark ....now that would be fun
I moved to Gateshead about 10 years ago and it has a bad reputation but to be honest everyone is pretty sound and if you keep yourself to yourself you will have no issues or bother.
That's a VERY good day for shields road. I got the bus down it every day for years and there was frequently people sat drinking cans at 8am. Also I have to say that the litter situation is out of control in this city, I know it's probably everywhere but people just don't give a fk anymore. Wallsend lad here, enjoyed the watch thanks
West road is the biggest shit hole in Newcastle!!!
Mini Birmingham
Yeah Scotswood Road
The west end. Spot the white man.
Cam confirm, I worked nightshifts on that road.
@@fricka1099 Geez sounds grim Frick
Newcastle is the Northernmost city in England, it gets winds straight from the Steppes of Siberia, but the women there wear the least clothes of any city in Britain.
Full of northern grit those Geordie lasses
Carlisle is England’s northern most city
@@D00M3R_MAVS Carlisle is more 'old-money'. Wealth from generations of farmers and very little industry, whereas Newcastle used to be industrial.
"Newcastle is the northernmost city in the UK"

Us Americans don’t usually visit or hear about cities in the uk besides London. Thanks for showing these places and the issues that affect them.
Plenty more coming before I head to the US. Thanks for watching
Us Americans ?? Talk for yourself dude
He did?? 🤨@@ozyuk9226
Get to Stoke 😂
Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear have some incredible history and scenery that is overlooked in favour of what's down south, which us northerners aren't too bothered about. The whole of the UK is pretty unique, it would take a lot of time to discover just what these islands have to offer.
there is no night out on the piss like a night out in Newcastle!!!, they don't mess around up there. best city to go for a night or 2 on the lash
You’re right, it’s unbeatable
100 % got something for everyone, for a city it's safer than most too
Im from newcastle and absolutley love living here iv worked around the whole uk and have never seen a place that has what we have we have a city centre with everything , we have one of the most amazing coastlines anywhere and so many country retreats , 90% of the people you meet who are locals will stop and help you if asked , the video stopped too soon i was gutted when it finished id deffo recommend visting the coastline and some places like whitley bay , tynemouth , alnwick , amble ect
maybee head all the way to bambrough castle to really see what the beauty of our area has
Agree the coastline is amazing
Coast line from South shields down to redcar is probably the worst coastline in the uk. Fact. You wouldn't even let your dog in the sea for fear it will die of pollution. The Northumberland coast is lovely for all of about 3 days a year when the sun comes out. Otherwise it doesn't really matter how nice the beach is when it's lashing down, freezing and blowing sand in your face. The weather in Newcastle is just awful, probably the worst in the country. Never get a full blue sky day ever in Newcastle. Height of summer in July and you are lucky if it gets to 20 degrees. It's been 12-15degrees for most of July so far. The women all think that fake tans look good because they get no sun. They all spend fortunes on sunbeds and fake tan so they can look like geordie carrots. Most the women are massively overweight in Newcastle aswell. Most geordies just live off greggs and Lager. The diet is shocking. The education is awful up north, the hospitals are full of africans, northumbrian police are an absolute disgrace, the councils are even worse. The one thing that makes Newcastle look OK is that all its surrounding areas are horrendous. Gateshead, Sunderland, Stanley, Chester le Street, teeside and County Durham villages. Some of the worst places to live in the UK.
They tore down loads of old buildings in the 70s and replaced it with the awful brutalist concrete you see around.
Unforgivable.
Still a stunning city, would love to have seen it back then
just dont go into gateshead proper dump @@GoingGlobull
@carlbland68 to be fair Hebburn and jarrow ain't much better 😂😂
Hebburn is 1 giant housing estate now and new builds popping up every 5 minutes on what used to be farmers fields and green belt. I remember as a kid having horses on fields where houses now are. As for Newtown... It's a mere shadow of what it used to be in the 80s and 90s.
Grainger market is probably the only place worth visiting in the centre of Newcastle. The rest is just the same old crap as everywhere else.
Shields Rd isn't as bad as the West rd, thats where you should have gone...the area has been
"Enriched" in recent years by the increasing number of doctors, engineers etc that have made it their home.
Blame the Tories and London Labourites for spreading them around the country. Nothing wrong in settling them in Kensington or Richmond upon Thames, eh.
Funny how you still can't get a GP appointment
No one wants to see the west road, it would be no dofferent than london or birhingham as he said at the start....
Well lots of streets around the country have been ‘enriched’ by white chavs , smackheads and beggars !
You on drugs, shields road is full So called English crackheads, most of the west road is owned by Asian millionaires, n its thriving n you people cant stand it lol only dwonside of west road is European gypsys standing around doing nothing!!
I'm a Geordie and i wouldn't change Newcastle for anywhere else,

Yep. Funny that it's people that don't live in Newcastle that want to visit and complain. Never had a single issue with an immigrant in Newcastle

Love Newcastle and love the Geordies, out of all the places ive been it's the one city that is as friendly as my home city of Liverpool.Im up there doing the great North Run in September, cant wait.
Great place and people!
Thats why us Geordies love Liverpool, you lot are just like us lol, and know how to have a good time, Ive had many a fab night at both Cavern Clubs lol
I'll respond in kind Tadie. I love Liverpool as my second home [Newcastle will always be no.1 of course] . Great city also mate.
Me and my wife recently had a weekend in Liverpool and loved it as a city. Had a similar feel to Newcastle and would definitely go back.
Two of the most racist cities in England surprise...no
I love it that you spoke well of my home city. We have our problems like every other city, but we are very welcoming and you seem well informed about Newcastle. Good video.
Good complimentary coverage of Newcastle. Enjoyed your clip with the "ganger man" in Byker.
You covered my home town Wallsend. Showed the church I was christened in. Also, good coverage of Byker wall. I finished my brickie apprenticeship on the final phase of construction of the wall.
Now live in Dorset. Thanks for the reminisce.
Thank you, glad it brought some good memories for you.
And the Byker Wall won design awards, its an unusual place to live but not unpleasant. I had great neighbours when I was there!
@@MistressofthegrooveI agree it does actually look quite an interesting place. Very colourful looking
Great video of a great City!
I moved to the North East from Manchester.
The most followed religion in these parts is Football and whilst this remains true the City will always be Strong, determined and United!
I'm from Newcastle, love it when Manchester United or Arsenal beat them lol!!! The Geordies are bad loosers and delusional at how good their team is, they have won no silverware since 1950s!!!
Great video mate, FYI it’s Seg-a-doon-um
Fantastic video, just randomly came up suggested and I’m glad I watched - Loved your well researched and complimentary presentation of this beautiful place that us Geordies are proud to call home - I swear most Southerners seem to think we all live in mud huts with no electricity and running water up here so it was very refreshing to see Newcastle being acknowledged and presented as the stunning and vibrant cultural powerhouse of the north it truly is - Just subscribed and looking forward to part 2 - P.S. I love Byker and never feel unsafe walking about any area of Newcastle unlike many other cities I’ve visited across the UK
Totally agree 100%, I would have said Benwell was far worse than Byker myself, they have an amazing Community there - having said that I lived in Benwell 30 years ago there is a lot of new developments there now. I happily walk the City Centre after midnight on a Saturday night on my own with no concerns.
U need to visit the west end of Newcastle m8
I’ve never experienced any issues in Newcastle either.
Us folk in the north east do show respect to each other. Everyone’s equal up here. There are no better or no worse. We like to give everybody the same respect and concern
@@beatbonjon1384Used to live and work in the west end haha loved it!
And the Tyne Bridge is getting a brand new renovation that’s expected to take nearly four years..!
So hopefully in the near future one of Newcastle’s most famous landmarks will be looking back to it’s best, or perhaps even better?
Class looking forward to seeing it
Gonna be a pain in the ass for the people getting to work in the mornings while it is shut lol
@@Mistressofthegroove
Yeah, but they’re gonna keep one lane on each side open while the work is carried out, it’s not ideal but it’s probably the most efficient way and cause the least amount of problems?
The bridge is going to be 100 years old in 2028 so it's getting a much needed face lift. The scaffolding is already started
I could have shown you worse streets lol. You got the bus through walker which I think of as rougher than Wallsend or Byker. I live South Tyneside now. But I grew up on the north of the Tyne.
Thanks for showing people why I'm proud of Newcastle and it's fantastic architecture.
I’m no expert in Newcastle but I always considered Walker as worse than Byker too
Thanks for showing my home town in a great light. Appreciate it.
The architecture is even better than Baths.
2:37 you should have went down that back lane. There's a Masonic Hall, with Vampiric, Rabbit Gargoyles, guarding the entrance.
Born and raised in Byker, and while there was always a few dickheads, we all knew each other, it was one big community. As you mentioned, the byker wall estate is like a maze, it was an amazing place to play hide and seek as kids 😁
I’ve noticed in the last few years an influx of people moving from down south up to Newcastle.
Not the southerners, they'll ruin the place! 🤣
I rated Byker, people were friendly around there
@@GoingGlobull while I appreciate you shining a nice light on our city, I worry it its gonna tempt more of those pesky southerners to show up 🤣

As someone who currently lives in Newcastle, grew up in Northumberland, have studied here for five years, the conversation you had with the Christian woman with the busker singing in the background was really touching. I love Newcastle and am writing my master's dissertation on the rise and fall of social housing in the area as someone who grew up on a council estate. you really did the area justice, as we get such a bad rep; thank you for your kind words!

I've lived here 17 years. Love this city.
In worst high streets in the UK I think shields road was voted bottom once. It's bad, but it's not that bad, I've seen worse.
If you want shitholes Elswick is a good bad one. Near Fenham. I once witnessed what looked like someone robbing a house from the top floor throwing tvs out of the window n such, but maybe they were just moving out lol.
You should travel more in your life bruh, an image of you walking in the subway with hundreds of spit out chewing gums on the street, and 15 seconds later you say there’s not one bit of rubbish and this is a beautiful city. If you think this is beautiful, you’d be quite literally speechless at some places in the world that are actually beautiful. I’m from Glasgow, & most of the buildings there look like the buildings here. Newcastle is not beautiful or unique, not many places in the uk are.
I’ve been around, a lot. If you can’t appreciate Newcastle or Glasgow I’d say it’s you who should travel more haha Out of interest which cities do you think are beautiful?
@@GoingGlobull Venice, Prague, Florence, Rome, Quebec, Jaipur, Kyoto, pretty much anywhere in Spain or Portugal as they weren’t bombed tf out of & still have their old buildings…
I have yet to see a pretty place in the uk.
The city of Petra is a good one…
The ‘pretty’ history we have in Glasgow is mostly violence related.
@@GoingGlobull I can appreciate Newcastle & Glasgow, definitely. I wouldn’t consider either of them attractive or decent places to live. You were walking by council houses with evidence of junkies laying discarded in the ground while attempting to describe the beauty of the chosen architecture… in Newcastle…
Maybe it’s because I used to live in Dubai where everywhere is picturesque. But I still believe I will never see a respectful competent individual walk around cities of the uk and describe their apparent beauty.
Go on a night time
8:05 my friend you're definitely in the wrong part of the city... no rubbish on the ground?... LOL... I say no more, if you know you know
Newcastle is not yet completely overrun by migration
Its getting there scum of the earth politicians and councils
It is however catching up at an ever increasing rate and is unrecognisable to 10 years ago

Shields Road is now an immigrant ghetto which was once a thriving shopping street back in the day. Stop the boats
Totally agree with you on the chat about religion. People don’t realise how beautiful our churches are and offer a free service for people. They won’t realise it until it’s gone or turned into a mosque.
What a utter dump no way on this earth I would live there. West road terrible place.

Wallsend is very similar to Byker
At the roman Fort it's where some of the world's best known ships where built, the ark roayl and turbina
Cheers, i didn’t know that
My first job was Swan Hunters shipyard :)
Re ships, don't forget the Mauretania and Carpathia
@@GoingGlobull My husband was a marine engineer and worked for Swan Hunter, the ships he worked and went on sea trials, were HMS Newcastle, HMS Illustrious, The Ark Royal and HMS Sheffield. The Tyne built the best ships in the world!!!
you reckon we live in a post christian world, typical donut statement from a boy who blags his way through life
Do you understand the word flippant?
Yes this is true. There are hundreds of thousands of Christians from Poland in the U.K and a new church opened up not far from Newcastle to accommodate West African Christians. Christianity is flourishing in South America, Central America, The Middle East, Europe. Britain was built on Christian values which remain eternal in law and every part of society.
@@GoingGlobull Got you, I was not familiar with your personality.
This was just a quick dip in and out of Byker, not enough to draw any real conclusions about the place. The amount crazy shit I've witnessed there is unparalleled.
I got hit by a car on Shield's road, and while I was on my back seeing stars, a nutter came and stole my phone. I had broken ribs but somehow managed to chase him and get it back. But aye.. Byker is no joke
People from the north east need to stand up for there little allotment we dont want it to turn into Islam before its to late
Sheilds road is a shit hole but definitely not the worst in the country. As other commentators have said theres worse places in the city than byker and we dont have any of the issues that citys down south have like the gangs and knife crime. But it is getting worse.
Going east to west, wallsend, walker, byker, benwell, elswick and scotswood were all heavy industy with ship building all along the river and the munitions factories in scotswood. When the factories closed there was high levels of deprivation that a lot of the communities never recovered from. Wallsend and walker werent bulldozed to the level the other areas were with a lot of the west end terraces replaced by blocks of flats and byker being replaced by the byker wall.
There was a plan to build a massive motorway behind the wall soone side just has a few windows dotted about as the wall was planned to shield the community from the noise and dirt from the motorway. But it was never built and as you pointed out the estate is like a maze. The problem came that if you knew the maze you were fine but if you didnt people could vanish so it was a hotbed for crime.
The city is pretty clean and tidy and as much as we have rough areas like byker you can walk around pretty much anywhere and not get bothered.
Oh and segedunum is pronounced seg-a-doon-um
Great video though looking forward to part 2

I was in Newcastle back in 2022. I fucking loved it. I keep telling my friends that England is not merely London; there are other places to go that are just as awesome and cheaper. Greetings from America 😁
15:23 That's a brilliant bald and bankrupt impression.
Shields Road ain't so bad, although It's not as good as it used to be. It's still got 2 good bike shops though.
Newcastle is in the dna of the local tribes. You can leave, but it never leaves you. Superb transport links and amazing coast to visit. And its still England up here. Fantastic history all around.

I'm born and bred in Byker. I been to many places in the UK, there a lot more worse places than Byker. I won't comment on these cause I never lived there. People only visit for a couple of hours. That can't give you a proper idea of the area and people. Thanks for a great video. Keep up the great work. Geordie Paul

Seg -e -doonum that’s how the Roman bits pronounced
My home town, doesn't get enough good press, it's better than it was.
Class city
I live in Heaton, which is just on the other side of Shields Rd to Byker. I know Shields Rd very well. It’s not at all dangerous, but it is run down. You may have seen the big white fronted building with shutters on the front. When I was a kid in the 80s, that was Parishes Department Store. Further down the street where the British Heart Foundation Furniture shop is now was another Department store called Beavans. They used to be thriving and it was a street full of greengrocers, Butchers, Electrical Shops, Hardware shops, Banks. It’s in a sorry state to how it once was. As for the Byker Wall, I’ve never had or seen any bother when I’ve been through there, but I can’t comment from what it’s like as a resident. As for Wallsend, again it’s a bit run down in parts but again I’m often in Wallsend and it’s fine. You pronounce Segedunum ‘Seg eh do num’. You shouldn’t think of Hadrian’s Wall in terms of modern day England and Scotland. It’s course is entirely in England and whilst in the West it’s only a few miles from the border, at Newcastle and Wallsend, it’s 60 odd miles south of the border. In Roman times the area was inhabited by the Brigantes and the Votadini tribes who both lived on either side of the wall. Post Roman times it was the Kingdom of Bernicia which stretched from the Forth (beside Edinburgh) to down to the Tees. Bernicia then merged with Deira (comprising mainly of modern day Yorkshire) to form the Kingdom of Northumbria. Whilst the Picts were up in Northern Scotland. So the entire notion of Hadrians Wall being a border with Scotland or built to keep the Scots out is entirely incorrect.
Cheers. The point about the wall was more about keeping the savages out, the Scottish bit was a bit of a joke. I’m planning on going up to Bamburgh castle in a few weeks to talk about the wall the 4 kingdoms the ‘Scottish’ tribes before heading north of the border
I’m not sure but I think Carlisle might be Englands most northern city 🤷🏻

Hi, you posted a lovely video of our home town.
No place in the UK like here. You will always get a fantastic welcome from us geordies
Excellent video, nice to see someone be so complimentary on the city. Like all places, we have our issues but there is a sense of pride in where we live that seems to be lacking elsewhere. Byker/Wallsend/Walker are deprived places in the East End that brings common problems with it, but majority of the people are salt of the earth and hard working. Areas in the West End like Arthur’s Hill and Elswick are equally as deprived but there are signs of regeneration, the city as a whole has gone through several cycles of change and I feel like we’re currently in another one given the poor economic climate, times are hard but the city and it’s people always survive and thrive. Keep up the good work with the videos, cheers.
Thank you. I’ve never met a Geordie I didn’t like. Great people and proper city. I’ll visit the other estate another time. Thanks for watching
Totally agree - especially re Arthur's Hill and Elswick. Its the people that make it, isnt it?

Not sure if you said this but there are 2 byker walls
I'm sure the one in byker is a copy of a one in Norway or Sweden or somewhere in Scandinavia
You could probs do a much longer vid on even the brief history of the wall, for e.g "Ratboy" a young prolific burgalur who would traverse through the heating system and always evade police, also there used to be a cinema at the bottom of shields Rd just up from where Morrisons is now, I seen one of the Rocky films there, was great

I really loved Newcastle. The Geordies are among my favourite folk in the UK. Always got on well with people up there.
Hats off and lots of respect to the lady talking about the Lord Jesus Christ on the street...God bless her....the British people will be SO much better off if they turn back to Christianity....they have lost their faith BIG TIME....that is why that country is where it fi nds itself now....from a South African.
Byker/Shield’s Road was alright when I was there 01/02.
Never had any problems there, you only have problems if you create problems in my experience.
The decline of Shield’s Road has nowt to do with the folk that live there, that’s all down to greedy landlords, central & local Government neglecting their duty & not investing our taxes where’s socially & economically needed.
Im totalling in love with all things Newcastle ❤ im a soft southerener as my geordie mum used to call me. She was from Wallsend, i lived in Reading, totalling different.
