  • Café Bustelo. I review the taste of this bold and smooth Latin inspired dark espresso ground coffee. Created in the 1920s by Gregorio Bustelo in NYC, this drink has been enjoyed by the Cuban community for almost a full century.
    Now, I get the privilege of trying it and sharing my thoughts on it.

    I'm an oldie from The Bronx where they used to have Bustelo grinding machines in the supermarket. Mi abuela would buy the beans, grind them in the supermarket. At home she'd put the grinds in a coffee sock, stick the sock in a jar and pour boiling water in the sock. She'd do this more than once per sock-ful. In the jar would be this thick, rich absolutely black brew. As a treat, she'd boil me some milk, put a dash of coffee in the milk and then I'd drown it is sugar. Such sweet memories!

    When I was a kid in the Bronx, my parents took my brother and me down to PR to visit our grandmother. At the time, the water in her area was not potable, so my mother would have to boil it (on my grandmother's kerosene stove) in order to brew up some powdered milk (KLIM - milk spelled backwards) for us to drink. To make it tolerable for us, she would add a few spoonfuls of my grandmother's boiled Bustelo coffee and some sugar. Ah! nostalgia.

    I think most people refuse to realize how good Bustello is because of the cheap price. Price be damned, it’s an excellent coffee. And it’s consistent from batch to batch. In fact it’s the only pre-ground coffee I have ever found that I liked. I brew it in espresso machines. But have had good results in drip and French press as well. I buy mine mostly in Costco, which used to be $10US for four 10 oz bricks (recently up to $14US), and cost me just .10 cents per cup!

      I wanted to love Bustello because the price is so low. I use Italian pre-ground espressos in my Moka pot: The bestsellers are illy Classico Espresso, illy Intenso Espresso, Lavazza Crema e Gusto, Lavazza Qualita Rosa, Lavazza Espresso Italiano, Bialetti Perfetto Moka, Kimbo, etc.
      I'm sad to say that by comparison the Bustello was very bitter and stale. I'll try it again in case I got a bad batch.

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@photina78 I recently moved a self powered speaker from my desk (where is sounds fairly bad) to use as the audio for a TV, where - SURPRISE! - it is sounding amazing! Go figure. But the same is true of coffee and the coffee maker you put it in. It can make a huge difference in the taste. Moka pots are fine, I use mine occasionally, and when camping. But if you can upgrade to a halfway decent pump machine (~$200), you may find it tastes different. Also, by using pre-ground you save another chuck by not buying a pricey grinder.

    • @photina78
      @photina78 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lanceevans1689 That's true. Do you recommend any particular machine?
      Excuse me while I rant about poor Moka technique for a minute here 😂
      Most people don't know how to use a Moka because they follow the Specialty Coffee influencers' hacks that don't make the best flavor.
      But I do it the authentic Bialetti way that's always been based on current scientific testing and taste testing for the best flavor, so my Moka coffee is consistently good.
      And the vast majority of Bustello lovers make it in a Moka - although the Hispanic Moka technique is also wrong, but at least it's better than the Specialty Coffee Influencers' hacks. 😂
      Everyone leaves the Moka on the stove too long! It's supposed to come off the stove the instant it starts to gurgle, or even a couple of seconds before it starts to gurgle, and finish brewing on your countertop from residual heat inside the pot, then stir and pour. Then the coffee isn't bitter or over-extracted, if all the other Bialetti instructions are followed to the letter.

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@photina78 Yes, your method is best. But there will still be a difference between it, and a pressurized brew. So skip the "steam" espresso machines, which are generally no better than a moka (with the added frothing). My suggestions will be a bit dated, but still available. I bought a Breville Cafe Roma like 13 years ago, for about $180 ($216 on amazon today). After about 18 months it died on me. Breville replaced it with a new one, even though it was out of warranty. That 12 year old espresso maker is still rocking wonderful cups all these years later. The water cover flap hinges broke and it is now hinged with a piece of duct tape, etc. But it still pairs wonderfully with Bustello right out of the brick. So, fully recommended. I also have a pricier Gaggia, which is wonderful. But doesn't make quite as good a cup from the Bustello as the Breville. As I say, you never know. And maybe the experimenting is a wee part of the fun? ;-)

After two years you have to be nuts to even want to drink the stuff. Unroasted green beans however can be stored up to two years with no degrade in taste.

    Bustelo works great in a Brikka, be it the first generation Brikka from 2017 and definitely the new Brikkas with the upgraded valve. It produces a huge crema (really foam, as moka pot is not true espresso). The Robusta in Bustelo is the key to the magic. Bialetti recommends a 70/30 Robusta/Arabica mix and when I grind my own beans I follow that ratio. Cafe Bustelo is great stuff. Toss it in the moka pot, toss it in a drip/filter machine, and people have pulled espresso shots with it. Probably best to use a pressurized portafilter since it's pre-ground - though it's a fine grind.

    I run cafe Bustello in a Mr Coffee espresso machine. I have tried everything under the sun as far as dark roasts go and for the money you can’t beat it. It’s right at 5 dollars at my local Walmart for a 10 ounce can. A 10 ounce can goes pretty fast around my house as we drink a lot of espresso. So it’s inexpensive enough to keep a spare can handy. As a matter of fact it’s 12:06 December 26 and I’m enjoying a piping hot cup of espresso right now. Along with my pipe with a nice light mint flavored tobacco. Well it’s life’s little pleasures that we got to take advantage of every day. As far as Cafe Bustello. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better espresso for the money. We go through a lot of French vanilla flavored coffee creamer also. Plus pure cane sugar. I’m not sure of the brand name. I buy it by the pound box on Amazon. It’s called sugar in the raw. It adds a chocolaty aftertaste to my espresso and it is just a pure pleasure to drink. I guess I’m going to have to upgrade my espresso machine the next time I buy one though. I keep wearing the Mr Coffee’s out. I have been through 3 in the past 2 years. Sorry this review is so long. I just can’t say enough good about Cafe Bustello.

      @@kirkoneill1387 - I was about to suggest getting a moka pot which is what a lot of people use to prepare their Cafe Bustelo coffee, but then I looked at the prices in Amazon (Canadian website) and the prices there are too exorbitant!!! Do you have something like a Walmart in Canada? You might find one that's reasonably priced there. I bought my 6-cup moka pot from Amazon (US website) for only USD$7.00. (Maybe you can buy the moka pot from the US website instead if you consider buying one.)

    You all can laugh, as I live Cafe Bastelo, but McDonalds coffee is the most flavorful coffee I’ve ever drank. Me and my family all drink it. But wait there is a twist. I’m not talking about McDonald’s fast food coffee but the brand they sell in the grocery stores. If you thought it would be the same, well you would be wrong. They taste nothing alike, and it’s a very robust amazing flavorful coffee that you could dream of.
    When I first saw it at a relatives house and made fun of them and that’s when they made fun of me as if the joke was on me? So I then tried it and I could not believe my taste buds take this advice go to the store get McDonald’s coffee regular McDonald’s coffee from the grocery store and you will be blown away it’s not cheap probably why most people have not drink it because they think they’re paying a premium for dog shit coffee that you would get from the fast food chain but that’s not the case this would give Bolivia‘s best to run for it to money
