The strive for perfection is what makes Flytying so interesting and helps expand our brain power. The pursuit is one of the wonders of nature and its ability to rewire the brain. This is why it’s so wonderful for veterans.

Many of us had interesting beginnings and were able to find our priorities and get it right

I'm always curious what these guys do on the day to day.
    Are they biologists? Teachers?
What does Cheech do or is he just a fly shop owner?
    Galloup is an easy one.
    What about Flagler?!
I think most are authors or writers and contributors to publications.

Interesting comments. Many flyfishing professionals consider that I've been in the game since 1967. Many were teachers, fishing guides, and lawyers; most had started as a part-time profession. The more successful ones with stores and became business owners. It is almost impossible to make a living writing for magazines; many years ago, the flyfishing clubs and sports shows hired professionals to give programs. I know that from 1976 to 2006, I got an average of over 100 days of speaking engagements. With the advent of social media, the economy diversified with an abundance of flyfishing experts with very few ways of making a living except for social media. With the expansion of professional guidance, most of them supplement their income. Few could've made good money endorsing fly patterns, but everybody still struggles and uses many avenues. There were a few of us in the golden days from 1985 to 2005 who made good money, and we are now old or deceased. Lawson, Kreh, Whitlock, Mathews, Kaufman, Barr, Becks, etc., the world has changed and has evolved. For example, the speaking engagement fee for a lecture or TV appearance in 1991 was $ 500 to 1500. You would be lucky to have $500 in today's money. Figure that out in 30 years of inflation. In other words, you must be multi-talented to survive or treated as supplemental income. Most flyfishing professionals nowadays choose a way of life over money.
