How to fly fish lakes English style with flyfishing legend John Horsley Unique Stillwater advice.
Back in the day of videotapes, John Horsley produced a very unique video on fishing lakes and reservoirs back when there was very little information on fishing lakes. The British are blessed with many public lakes and reservoirs and have become over the years. Some of the most prolific flyfishing experts in Lake education. Veterans of many Stillwater competition fishing have produced a wealth of knowledge to be shared here in the USA. While this is over 30 years old its message still resonates in the much-growing flyfishing Stillwater's. A wonderful gift from the British

Hello JD we have a current video of my mom Leslie tying at our shop Back Cast Fly Co. on 11/22/2024 in Rexburg ID. Our channel is Back Cast Fly Co. you can find the video there. She will also be tying at our booth this year. Saturday morning 02/15/2025.
Thank you very much I will pass on this information to our viewers as I've had several ask about other videos. I'm back hosting the Wasatch Intermountain fly fishing and tying Expo in Salt Lake City March 28 and 29th. Consider coming to our Expo with your booth it's very reasonable and could highlight your mother's tying and your products. Find out more I going to www.wasatchexpo.com. Every person who has come down to the Expo in the past has done well your neck of the woods. Cheers Jack Dennis
Any chance to watch one of the Harrop family tie a fly is a gift. Thanks for this video.
You bet!
So pleased you posted this thank you. I used to have a copy of this but lost it. I fish the same lakes and this is still very relevant today.
Amazing video, can't wait to go back!
You should!
Whether you call this one a Leech or a Woolly Bugger -- it looks great ! Thanks Jack.
Really good pattern
I bet this would be a good imitation for the leeches I've seen in Yellowstone Lake. It would be good to see you in the Denver area!
@@tinoyb9294 I agree with you on the leeches and Yellowstone like had a wonderful trip last July there. Big cutthroats . Really don’t have any reason to come to Denver except visits to Umpqua . After I retired 12 years ago, I did help run the watch that Fly Fishing show for eight years. I retired from that. After the pandemic we moved from SAlt lake to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and I’ve been coming back every summer and fall guiding old friends as the family has a vacation home in Pinedale, Wyoming. Very few people paying for lectures these days. The old group that ran the Expo is getting together to breathe some life back into it. You have a wonderful show in Denver. What’s the new location? The shows look like they’re getting new life pumped into them people like to talk. Face-to-face, rather than through a computer or FaceTime be looking forward to more flies From past Expo’s coming your way. Thanks again for texting me.
20 years since this was produced and it still gets em on the creeks!
One of my iconic great masters! I have all his books, flies and even 3 of his ‚stealth‘ rods. Thank you Gary, for what you did for our sport! 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for these classics. Theyre really good content! Wising you a lovely NY and all the best for 2025
Thanks for your comment we will bring more classics of the fly tying and flyfishing this winter. Best wishes for a great year of big fishes
Does this fly have a specific name, Jack?
What a bunch of great Americans.
Normally, I find banter in instructional videos bugging, but you guys are hilarious.
@@andrewmorke Glad you enjoyed it
Craig, my tackle boxes have an abundance of X Caddis and Iris Caddis flies. Thanks for your superb designs.
Glad you like them!
Gary here is tying the caddis LARVAE that don't form a case for pupation. Simplicity in design.
Float tubes/pontoons sure have come a long way. That looks pretty rough. lol
We've come a long way in a fishing equipment. In the 50s we used truck tire inner tubes with canvas support for Lake fishing with rubber waders. You could buy the canvas saving from Dan Bailey's fly shop Montana and your local tire store for the truck inner tube. I started flyfishing there were only silk lines and Spanish Gut Leaders which you had to soak to make them pliable. You had to add floatant on the lines. I remember when plastic coated lines came and nylon tapered leaders. Greatest day of my fishing life Gore-Tex waders changed everything
Showing the naturals alongside the imitations was very cool.
This guy is boss.
This is the best instruction I've seen in ages.
Mike is that you?! If it is you thank you for everything! I learned from your videos a long time ago. I remember watching you in VHS. Thanks to you my fishing skills are amazing. I have been teaching two guys and they ask me how i learn. And its hard explain to the new generation i learned fly fishing from a VHS....its hard to explain that to them since i am older haha. Thank you very much! Hope you continue doing these videos.
Yes it is! Be sure to catch tying and fishing our favorite flies on this channel for more updated information
Sweet fly thanks again for this video
You bet
A dry fly that can match hatches, works great as an attractor, floats almost how you treat it (or don’t treat it - with floatant), is highly visible has to be awesome. I love the whole Wulff series. Thank you for posting.
They are so important to our fly fishing history and still major producers
@ Absolutely.
Hearing the history is as interesting as seeing the fly tied. Sure hope newcomers are watching this.
Our series will continue with more flies from the past thank you very much for your comment it means a lot
Awesome videos
Glad you like them!
Great stuff, Jack. Love those old flies. I first learned to tie the Muddler Minnow way back in 1974 using the instructions in "Western Trout Fly Tying Manual" by some guy named Dennis.
Great tip!
I LOOKED like that TOO in 1986
long time ago
Great to see you back making good videos -- Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Same to you!
Real fine Jack. Great fly I don’t know how many times I used it as a grasshopper. I never weighted it down as it’s a problem fishing it deeper. Will start next time I tie one. Thanks for sharing.
Right on
JD...thanks for posting all your videos. It's great to see these old masters. Keep them coming!

We will and thank you !
Thanks, will do!

Awesome video Jack, well done Flip, your combination of storytelling, cinematography and history do a super job explaining this legacy that I was fortunate to participate in the first year it ever was put on in 1986
Glad you enjoyed it!
great bullet head on that hopper!
JD. This is an absolute gem of a video!! It deserves way more views. It could use a good edit as the sound cuts out periodically. Some of the moments are priceless. I especially enjoyed the Joan Wulff segment at 33:00. I don’t know how inclined you are to get a professional TH-camr to work with you but this is a potential gold mine. I’ve watched your other videos. As historical documents of Rocky Mountain fly fishing they are all good but this one is the best of the lot that I’ve seen thus far. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for your comments realize that this video was filmed and edited in 1992 the reason the sound has dropped out was to replace music which was mixed with dialogue realize that copyright use was paid for in 1992 but TH-cam blocks its use as most of the music was sold to other copyright firms that don't recognize owner paid use. This is a problem we've had over the years. I would love to be able to reedit and present historic footage but the time and cost does not justify the return. I spend my extra time as I am 77 restoring easily what I can. Quite frankly there doesn't seem to be the interest in the flyfishing past enough to to justify. I want you to know I appreciate what you said and agree that this is wonderful view of the past. I will do what I can to bring more to the public.
Jack Dennis produces the biggest piles of dung with his pathetic attempts at fly tying/fishing videos
You should do another video on handling a drift boat ; )
Sorry for the late response, it was an idea I explored many years ago I'm surprised in today's flyfishing market somebody hasn't taken the opportunity. Financially, it really isn't something that could be done profitably. But I will add over this next year some techniques and tips on float fishing and to operate safely drift boats and rafts this certainly is an interest now.
Thank you so much for posting this. I grew up in the WC area as a young man. Took major interest into fly fishing after watching the American Sportsman episode on fly fishing in the NE US to get me out. This cartoon/magazine like book jumped out at me, “The Curtis Creek Manifesto” at the local thrifty store. I would still have it to this day but it made it out to the. Sorry, old story. Reborn love for the sport again. Andy helped me build my very 1st fly rod. I wanted a scott. Obviously being a 14 yr old in 1984 with a need to fly fish my local waters in the Mt. Diablo. I only found out today the date of his passing. A LOT has happened between then, & now. Remember casting at the lake outside of HF park. With DVFF I learned a lot. But it was Andy’s way of talking & easy going personality. He helped be build my rod shortly after moving into the PH location from WC. I loved how he would just let me grab any rod and just not even worry. Asked,” if I should tie some glo bug yarn to the tippet? At the beginning…he murmured and smiled said, your good. Thats why I’m helping you out. A Asian kid in the Suburbs why fly fishes. Yup 👍🏽 I’m sending flowers to his family
Thank you for your passionate reply I try to keep this history alive as best I can. I wish I had more to share his I'm working on some old tapes of Andy tying at the international sportsmen Expos. He was an amazing man and I had the pleasure of presenting with his entry into the Northern California fly fishing Hall of Fame.

I just talked with Kelly... said Jack didn't know a thing about fishing
Kelly has excellent ensight
@jdswideworldofflyfishingan4759 i asked him about Mr. Jack. Because I enjoy the videos and the charisma of him and his friends Gary and Mike. Kelly was talking about the big money in the area. And I said where did Jack come from and his relationship with Gary. And was Jack bank rolling Gary. I was trying to figure out who help to fund Gary's research and maybe Gary himself. And Kelly didn't respond, but smirked at me for reasons I didn't know. And that was when he implied no when he said Jack didn't know a thing. In the context of assisting Gary and his understanding of the caddis. That was my gathering of it. He just said Gary was a psychologist and implied he had his own money. Your right about Kelly. He has excellent ensight about everything we talked about, which was fishing theory. But beyond that, I think hevwas very perspective of probably a whole slough of things. I very much so enjoyed my visit with him. When I watched this video, I can sense the mood between the two of you. Competitive and little bit cocky. I enjoy this video for that and his demeanor on how he deals with you. And you taking him to a difficult place to fish. And i can't help but wonder if you sand bagged him to humble him. Then I went to Jackson Hole and specifically tracked down Jacks shop and when I went in there to pay homage they said... Jacks not involved and sold out years ago and said he's in the Carolinas now... I forgot what they said exactly. But I said you better acknowledge Jack and this place because he is the only reason why I came here. I just picked up one of Gary's books Mr. Jack recommended. I opened it up and it's signed by Gary. It was unexpected and just having that makes me feel a little bit closer to Gary. But thanks Jack for introducing your friends and I really enjoy your delivery and your a great teacher who certainly does know a thing about fishing. You have a wonderful sense of humor.

How much of this is still accessible?! Hopefully there's still some public land left that hasn't been bought up by outsiders.
Wyoming is still blessed with lots of BLM , Forest service , and state public fishing
