What EV takes an hour to charge if you don’t mind? Jamaica has pointed out by the BMW representative is small enough to travel from one point of the island to the next without needing to recharge if driving at normal speeds. I think the time has come for more EV’s on the road in Jamaica. Charging infrastructure is the only impediment I see at the moment.
@ it’s nice that you don’t see $80k US + as an impediment 😁, but regarding the promised EV range … seeing is believing. It would have made for a great infomercial to show Throp driving from Kingston to Negril and back without needing to charge, or if he needed to charge, then demo the process of paying and plugging to charge at the Negril charging station to see how a RL scenario works outside the showroom sales pitch. If the industry is serious about making EV a contender in that market, more than showroom talk will be needed to convince most persons who had to work to earn high end EV money.
Throp, thank you for this. The focus on electric vehicles (EVs) is exciting, but there is so much more potential when we consider the broader implications. Jamaica's crude oil bill is arguably one of our most significant obstacles to development. I suggest conducting a comprehensive series on the potential opportunities and benefits that could arise from Jamaica weaning itself off oil. You could include segments on EVs, solar panels, wind turbines, and nuclear energy, and the implications for entrepreneurship, economic growth, and overall development if this transformation were managed holistically. We are fortunate to have many natural assets-such as abundant wind and sunshine, and maximum travel distances that make EVs very practical despite their range limitations, etc. However, do we have a national comprehensive energy independence strategy to channel these technologies as a means of propelling ourselves into the first world?
Great quality video Throp and good information. What camera brand and model did you shoot this video with? By the way, at first glance, I said to myself, I didn't know LeBran James is connected to Jamaica. 😃😃 Much success Mr. Wellington! I have subscribed to your channel.
One thing buy a car in Jamaica is too expensive. For example that BYD car is sold retail for £39000 in uk but at this Jamaican dealership its been sold for 12m Jamaican £60000. That's £21000 more. And he is saying European car are more expensive when Jamaican enjoys a duty free trade with EU.
@Throp as an EV enthusiast I must say, this was a well made video. It really addressed most of the issues around EV ownership. But the focus has to be on the benefits to the environment. Running on EVs makes for a better Jamaica, because vehicle emissions is very toxic. People don't realize the Health savings, from not using Gas. With Jamaica having so much sunshine, most of these vehicles can be powered by the Sun. If a person puts solar panels on their home, with Battery Storage, they could generate energy to charge their vehicles. That means they could drive for almost free and it would save on Power Plant emissions.
We got Chevy Bolt EUV…28k USD - 10k USD (2.5K from the state of Oregon and 7.5k Federal tax credit) and 30+% tax credit to put charger in our garage. Our electric company paid for our charge. We love it. If you can get one jump in now.
I agree that EV cars are the way to the future. However, I believe you are going to see significant stagnation in sales in the coming years. Why? the technology is still in R&D and refining. There are serious issues with fire, particularly if water gets inside. To replace the engine is more costly than the car itself. Secondly, inadequate charging station and the time you have to wait for charging.
Actually, your fears are fears that would've suited an argument/s at least 5 years ago... Facts. 1) Electric fire are so rear it not comparable to an ICE fire.. However, electric fires are far more dangerous because water alone can't out that fire. 2) The technology of electric and batteries improvement are ongoing... Where the technology reached now, WOW, it far outweigh the cons. Actually, electric cars are far more suited to travel in a flooded street than an ice car... There are so many cases of electric cars rescuing folks from flooded areas. why, because the battery management is the foremost thing a manufacturer works on to improve the car... 3) Yes, the batteries make up the bulk of the cost for the car. Why? There are 100's less moving points (nuts, bolts, pivots, plugs, etc) in an electric car when compare with an ice car. NB* There are no engine in an electric car! The main components are: Batteries and Motor/s. The motor is attached directly to the wheels, hence the efficiency of the power train when compare to an ice vehicle. Norway is the first country to being almost 100% electric transportation. Are they having more fires now than, let say 10 years ago? NO! Actually, they are very well please, but sad that Elon Musk(who was the electric cars champion) lost his damn mind.
Nice looking vid, @Throp. Would love to see a follow up vid on some more affordable EVs, and also some specifics of the charging infrastructure. Any public charging station that is not tier three, is a waste of space. How many of existing stations are fully functional… inclusive of payment method, etc. Any associated app to tell station locations, tier, status, payment?, etc. and which EVs are the chargers compatible with (assuming manufacturers still haven’t standardized the plugs)
You're gonna need a minimum of x3 the number of gas stations on the island in chargers in order to offer a similar level of reliability. This is so as it takes a significantly longer time to charge one's car vs the 2 - 4 minutes it takes to fill up one's tank at the pump.
You make it sound like the Jamaicans you know are the only people in Jamaica my friend. I'm in the U.S. and I know there are many Jamaican residents who live a far better lifestyle than I do here. @Throp Key words: The Competition. Meaning everyone else outside of Tesla. Here are the facts: The best selling car (not EV) in the world for 2023 is the Model Y and they are on their way to repeat that this year again. The EV numbers for BYD are high because Hybrids (which aren’t really EV’s) are included, if you remove Hybrids Tesla is still king. Also the numbers of BYD outselling Tesla was in China…. I’m all for electrification and have been following Tesla since 2012, but let’s just speak the truth. BYD has done extremely well and will be the demise of ALL the other legacy automakers (BMW, BENZ, VW GROUP, FORD, GMC, all the Japanese brands etc) and has provided healthy competition for Tesla IN CHINA. But globally they still have a way to go….
EVs are the way to go! Jamaica just need more charging infrastructure..also a likkle subsidy or incentive from the government would be nice for buying an EV. BUT the biggest headache is those damn roads. Some of those craters I’ve seen in my travels GOOD GOD!
Jamacia is smaller than most states in the US and the reduction in the foreign exchange for petro, EV adoption will benefit the country tremendously. There will be less pollution! Make the progress✊🏿
I believe Jamaica will be one of the first in the western hemisphere to have EV causeways. Streets that charge EVs and sell residual power to the grid infrastructure.
It is funny reading the same irrational fears other countries went through 5 years ago. Ja will be like most countries at the start, stuck for five years because of a fear of change. For example most islands are so small, range was only an issue in the mind. Tesla had it first electric car in 2008, so the technology is not new. There are millions of miles of data.
@@faithm2535 The caribbean is perfect for EVs. Warm weather. Short Journeys. Solar potential. Virtually maintenance free vehicles. Delicate eco system to protect.
@@changeA-o4i as one who respects the environment and drove an EV in US for a while, I’m definitely a fan, BUT a realistic one. Short trips may be the norm for most Ja travelers, but I think there is a desire to do longer trips for both business and leisure around the island. And ‘range anxiety’ in Ja should be more accurately described as ‘charging station anxiety’. I would have more confidence IF I saw evidence that charging stating infrastructure was being installed from a lessons learned perspective, with transparency and post installation validation of each station’s usage. IMHO… - only level 3 chargers make sense (level 4 is already a thing), and JPS need to disclose if their grid can handle that. - more info needed on charger compatibility, as not all EV can use same chargers, the way all ICE cars can use same gas pumps. - and how reliable is the payment method that will be used at each charging station. Even in US, I sometimes pulled up to charging stations. Then had to leave because the digital payment system wasn’t working properly, and no money collected, no charging will commence.
@ home charging will satisfy maybe 80-90% of driving time needs, BUT the other 10-20% is also important. My preferred solution would actually be for manufacturers to invent and supply an accessory battery pack, like cell phone users can buy.
Electric vehicles have more ,cost less to run, almost 0 mechanical maintenance,no nervous gas station fill ups, only 1 con,how will they perform in the wet seasons, flooded roads etc,i already am involved in PEVs ,looking to get a kia ev 6 for yaad 🙂❤️🇯🇲
Just that the roads are so bad and maintenance of these cars are expensive! I bought a petrol BMW 10 years ago and it’s still looking like the new car it was back then, that’s down to pretty good roads here.
Given the exorbitant fuel prices in Jamaica, adding EV to the mix is a great option. However, the vast majority of Jamaicans can only dream from afar about buying those expensive brand cars BMW, AUDI etc. So it begs the question. When will this evolution benefit the masses, a teacher, a police, a civil servant or even medium wage earners? Why are car prices doubled once they get to Jamaica?
When was the last time you serviced your fridge which runs 24/7 for at least 10 to 15 years? EVs are essentially a fridge on wheels, but don't event run 24/7. Service is mainly tires every 40 to 60K miles.
They always just promote the Positives , let's hear the Negative side of EVs . I have done a research on EVs and it's not all Good. My son is a Uber driver in London and he has just returned his Tesla EV . Tell people Both side , so they can make a informed decision . Respect.
EV are good, but everyone need to look down the road such as the safety hazards. Example if the vehicle catch fire either from an accident or while charging at home are the fire crews capable of handling those fires.
Electric vehicles make a good deal of sense for tropical islands. Solar power can be generated locally. Trips are relatively short so range is not a great concern. LFP batteries also last about 15-30 years. Imported fuels tend to be expensive, polluting, hazardous/combustible, and their supply chains can be easily disrupted by natural disasters or external politics.
From an environmental perspective there are immense benefits to all Jamaicans and the world. Imaging being able to lower carbon emissions 50% or more. Then there is the safety aspect. Better technology lowering accident rates for both pedestrians and motorists alike. Additionally the more competition in the market the better it will be for all consumers and all Jamaicans forcing suppliers to lower prices and offer more value in their products
Shame that the first 30 seconds only deals with luxury EVs from legacy luxury manufacturers. The sentiments are correct. As an EV owner in the caribbean I agree that buying anything else for island life is not wise. We're not trapped by winter, nor the costs and profiteering of the US and the EU with charging and the rest, nor do we have long drives and commutes into the ocean. We need to be rid of our fight for gas and oil on our islands but if the cover and intro of the book is worth anything, starting with Porshe, BMW, and Audi further makes the conversation around EVs another class-based, 'too expensive' convo sadly. Literally EVERY false and debunked EV rumour ended up in the comments. Meanwhile for the few of us that could and did as regular folk in BGI or POS all the way up to KIN, we're doing well without visits to gas stations, oil changes, oil filter changes, spark plugs, and all the rest. Travel through the caribbean @Throp and do your part 2.
Car such as the electric Porsche which sits lower are not good for flooded roads I had a friend who had one and drove to high water and the car was toast and the insurance wrote the car off
Hurricanes and resulting flooding? Nobody talks about the disaster scenarios. Grid goes down for weeks and months, Solar panels damaged by hurricane winds, then gas car owners will be laughing.
Level 2 or 3 charging? Real world range? How many technicians do you have? More than in the US? What happens after 4 years of warranty service? Tesla succeeds because it sells the car as well as providing the fuel stations. I’m not a Tesla fanboy, but I can see it’s the only electric car worth owning.
The down side of EV is no more DIY so 100% of the service is at a dealer or a service shop. if you want the best luxury Ev, none other than the Nio ET9.
Just consider how often we get brown outs and spikes with JPS... I've lost many electrical components just leaving them plugged into the wall. I'd suggest the island wait for the next gen of solid state batteries which are smaller, lighter, and safer... Bless!
Another case of the horse before the carriage.... this is a BAD idea in jamaica with this current infrastructure.... this is all just a marketing ploy....also, anyone that has the experience of owning a new car from the dealer knows the customer service SUCKS!!!... and now ur stuck with having to deal with them because overseas dealers sending u back to the dealer in ja.... don't get cause in the short sighted view about the cost of petrol when other factors are at play.... THE ENVIRONMENT BEING ONE...
Jamaica declined and arguably never fully recovered from the oil embargo of the 1970s. It would behoove the island to transition to less dependency on petroleum, as they still don’t produce or refine any.

Get time to relaxed and meditate to detoxify the body
I've fully charged my EV in 15-20 mins and paid 1/3 the price compared to petrol.
Great interview it’s amazing how Jamaica 🇯🇲 have so many high end cars 🚗
And most of the people who are buying them a live Inna rent house....maths not adding up
@ not really wrong with living in rent house 🏡 it’s all depends I’have 3 houses but present I’m living in rent apartment
Niche market … aimed at small percentage of wealthy Jamaican families, new money celebs, or wealthy immigrants.
Great interview, so excited! Thanks so much Throp!
This is awesome!
This is the kind of conversation that we need to help us in making that EV decision. Im looking a new workhorse and EV is beginning to look appealing.
I could buy 2023 Bmw X5, X6 Audi q8 and Porsche with a few thousand miles for 12m jmd =£ 60.000 and even half that price
That is a madness! These cars don't seem feasible unless wealthy Americans buy them. Are there many Jamaicans that can afford them?
Thanks for the confirmation that you are always buy things twice in Jamaica once fir yourself and then fir the bigger heads😅😅😅

Great info 👍
thank you!
Very well done video. Very inspiring. Well done Automotive and Throp

We got Chevy Bolt EUV…28k USD - 10k USD (2.5K from the state of Oregon and 7.5k Federal tax credit) and 30+% tax credit to put charger in our garage. Our electric company paid for our charge. We love it. If you can get one jump in now.
EV is perfect for Jamaica, and I plan to invest in one.
You should also invest in the Chinese EV company NIO
Love the video quality. I hope you'll teach us your setup one day
What is the difference in annual maintenance costs?
Cool vlog Throp 🎉
Definitely the future. Better in every way.
Thanks for watching
Whether you like EVs or not is basically irrelevant at this point. This is the future. Thanks for covering this Throp.
Glad to hear that you have mechanics to fix the EV on the roads.
This was a good one bro I see you get out of the hotel and start doing interview on the outside good job I need to test drive one of those
I agree 👍 ev the way to go
I agree that EV cars are the way to the future.
The potential stagnation can be mitigated with govt tax incentives, good marketing, and improvement with charging infrastructure
Love this EV’s are the future and the future is now
4:24 Living with not smelling the cars. I spend a lot of my commuting time rebreathing my own exhalations, just to avoid breathing tailpipe exhaust.
Woow nice good look oh yes it is oh my lord nice cars.
BYD for the win!
that's right!
You're gonna need a minimum of x3 the number of gas stations on the island in chargers in order to offer a similar level of reliability. This is so as it takes a significantly longer time to charge one's car vs the 2 - 4 minutes it takes to fill up one's tank at the pump.
The elephant in the room is the horrendous cost of replacing the batteries of these vehicles
Battery come with a ten years warranty
@@robertwill1694 you best read the fine print.
I misunderstood what this channel is. The Jamaicans I know barely manage their homes, much less own a car. I wish you well with your channel.
You make it sound like the Jamaicans you know are the only people in Jamaica my friend. I'm in the U.S. and I know there are many Jamaican residents who live a far better lifestyle than I do here. The Stewarts who own that dealership are not idiots, They wouldn't open a car dealership that won't do good business in Jamaica. Do not underestimate Jamaicans!
Well produced, but seems pretty much to be an ATL advertisement. Would love to have seen some govt interviews on policy that will shape the industry. Also would love to see interviews with principals of the charging network and their plans. Also conversations with customers and actual drivers would be great as well
I switched to a EV here in UK 4 years ago, at first it was cheap to charge but now it's the same as petrol!
What happens when we have a hurricane and JPS is down for days/weeks?
Solar
They have battery storage to back up the gride. The Ford lighting can be used as a generator since it has VTL.
When something sounds to good to be true it normally is how many years do these battery s last and. What does it cost to replace 😮
Need more affordable EV, barrier to entry seems too tedious. Great video though, appreciate the information and fantastic production quality 👍
0:55 I have no idea what the hell I was looking at. 😂
I would love to get one of those EV to put it to the test to see how it hold up
Great video with great interviews but Elon never said that BYD is outpacing Tesla at a rate they (Tesla) cannot compete.
"Tesla's CEO issued a warning to his fellow automakers: That, on a level playing field, Chinese carmakers will outcompete almost everyone else." He's been quoted multiple times saying variations of this statement. I'm an Elon fan as well but the reality is the reality. www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-says-protectionism-is-the-only-thing-stopping-china-s-cheap-evs-from-demolishing-the-competition/ar-BB1heort?apiversion=v2&noservercache=1&domshim=1&renderwebcomponents=1&wcseo=1&batchservertelemetry=1&noservertelemetry=1
@@Doogz101probably doesn’t hurt for Tesla CEO to assist in installing a POTUS who want to implement high tariffs on China made products 🤓
EVs are the way to go! Jamaica just need more charging infrastructure..also a likkle subsidy or incentive from the government would be nice for buying an EV. BUT the biggest headache is those damn roads. Some of those craters I’ve seen in my travels GOOD GOD!
Elon Musk wasn't talking about Tesla when he made the statement.
Jamacia is smaller than most states in the US and the reduction in the foreign exchange for petro, EV adoption will benefit the country tremendously. There will be less pollution! Make the progress✊🏿
Does ATL sell EVs in Montego Bay?
@@garfieldwhittaker944 Yes.
I believe Jamaica will be one of the first in the western hemisphere to have EV causeways. Streets that charge EVs and sell residual power to the grid infrastructure.
One question I have, what's the lifetime of the batteries before replacement? and how much does it cost for new batteries?. sorry, that's two question

More than possible. Many many have done it already. I recommend reaching out to a good shipper and a good customs broker
i wonder if there are more EVs would the the demand for electricity be greater in the long run would electricity get more expensive
id like to know how much the JPS bill ago be per month, even if you go solar to charge these for it to make sense gonna also cost millions
An EV is perfect for any family that has more than one vehicle in household or anyone who works and plays exclusively in St. Andrew
@@faithm2535 Home charging?
IMHO…
- only level 3 chargers make sense (level 4 is already a thing), and JPS need to disclose if their grid can handle that.
Honestly, Electric Vehicle Revoulation in Jamaica with Charging Ports at Every Gas is Not a Good Idea.
🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Those cars are impressive but maintence costs just too high
When was the last time you serviced your fridge which runs 24/7 for at least 10 to 15 years? EVs are essentially a fridge on wheels, but don't event run 24/7. Service is mainly tires every 40 to 60K miles.
I’d love to make the switch, but I can’t afford even the most affordable Audi, Mini, BMW, BYD, or Porsche!
Checkout the Chery V23, it starts at $13K USD.
I still prefer old school.
fair enough
How is this beneficial to the average person living in jamaica.
I did not see any teslas
all these islands have to switch to full electric. Range is not a problem.. a full charge will make round the island easily.
If your roads were on the right and left driver side, I would have moved to Jamaica tomorrow :-)
Car such as the electric Porsche which sits lower are not good for flooded roads
I had a friend who had one and drove to high water and the car was toast and the insurance wrote the car off
EV in Jamaica is for the rich right now
All fun and games till they lock u out
The only cars Jamaicans should be driving are gently used cars and you can’t allow a leasing option either. You could allow bank loans.
Jamaicans can't even afford these cars.
Jamaica power is not reliable getting a Ev with that power grid is crazy.
Hurricanes and resulting flooding? Nobody talks about the disaster scenarios. Grid goes down for weeks and months, Solar panels damaged by hurricane winds, then gas car owners will be laughing.
His price comparison is totally incorrect; JPS is $54 per KW, offpeak after 4-6pm it jumps to $130 ish per KW. So the maths and see if you get 200km
I will remain with petrol for the moment. Maybe ev later on.
The down side of EV is no more DIY so 100% of the service is at a dealer or a service shop. if you want the best luxury Ev, none other than the Nio ET9.
As a two-Tesla owner, JA will be fine, so why not join the trend. Actually, the Caribbean i the perfect place for EVs

Jamaica declined and arguably never fully recovered from the oil embargo of the 1970s. It would behoove the island to transition to less dependency on petroleum, as they still don’t produce or refine any.
