WotC has been cutting stores' margins several times already. I appreciate the sounding of this, but it doesn't necessarily change the MO of people that were dodging GW stuff anyways. However, in the states (where GW has a much lower saturation of storefronts), this won't drive me to go 500+ miles to get to my nearest GW store.

Great Video. So I am an independent retailer who sells GW products in my store. Speaking only for myself here’s my thoughts on the situation. Am I happy about the price increase? No not really. Am I going to raise my prices accordingly? Absolutely not. Is it going to put me out of business? Of course it isn’t. Realistically what’s going to happen is we’ll cut down on which products we stock and how many copies we get. So for example Necromunda isn’t a huge game in our area so we don’t regularly just buy copies of stuff for it for our shelves. But, if someone pre-orders something we buy it for them and they get it on release day like normal. Maybe we’ll move Blood Bowl, Warcry, and Underworlds to the same category (except for the “bestsellers” products GW makes us carry). Also we typically buy extra copies of big releases above our pre-orders and we’ll probably just cut down on the number of those too. But we’ll continue to stock GW and sell at MSRP because our Warhammer guys also buy lots of stuff we carry that we make much higher margins on.
One other thing to remember is I don’t know if this price increase only affects retailers that buy direct from GW. Some retailers buy there GW stuff from a distributor who works out their own discount rates with both GW and the retailer. It’s possible depending on the local store and who they buy from that they won’t be seeing any increase in price.
As inconvenient as this is some people in the comments have pointed out the reason that ultimately GW still needs Rogue Traders. Because you can’t play in most GW stores, and obviously can’t on the web store. That is still a major way of luring new players into the game.
Basically though Discourse, you got it exactly that this isn’t a problem if stores want to stay in business and be profitable. It’s only a problem if like GW, local stores want to be MORE profitable each year. Long term my store is better served making slightly less and keeping my customers happy and loyal than it is by passing the price increase on to them so my margins stay the same and my annual profits increase.

They are shorted hundreds of paints, and when new boxes come out they only receive two or three of them. It hurts their client base because the store thinks the item is available, GW tells them it will take two weeks to ship, the store sells it, and then GW refuses to ship it. We need to support local stores, or failing that, independent online retailers, even if the discounts get smaller or go away entirely. GW is still aggressively trying to maximize their profits beyond any reasonable level. They've pushed consumers as far as they think they can, so now they're targeting the 3rd-party retailers that actually provide the only public gaming space in most towns, at least in the USA. (We have game clubs here, but for the most part, they don't have their own space; they rent a hall for one night a week; and of course, GW is pushing their managers to NOT allow play in GW retail stores beyond stripped-down demo games.) If we want to keep the hobby as we know it alive, we MUST shop from 3rd-party retailers, even if they offer NO discount, because their mere existence--especially if they serve as a play venue--is a service that GW is actively attempting to eliminate.

My partner and I ran an independent store until May this year. It was in Redruth, UK; one of Europes poorest areas. Upstairs we had 8 gaming tables and an area for all gamers, whether Magic, GW, Mantic or board games. The price rise earlier this year was the final coffin nail for us. Combined with an inability to afford heating and lighting for the gamers any more, we just could not survive. Poorer areas need hobbies and interests too. Long term, poorer areas are important for the hobby. They create interest, new gamers, respect and understanding, let alone huge social benefits. Greed and profit are happy to stamp on them for a quick buck though. So sad!

I saw this video recently, and I remembered it after buying some paints from my nearest GW stockist, which I was slightly surprised were sold at full RRP. So I had a bit of a search around and I found what looks like the current GW price list for Northern Europe. This will be handy for when I want to order something through my local store, and need to give them a product code. Anyway, a couple of things of particular interest. Firstly, the paints each come in packs of six. GW trade price is ~55% of RRP, so for any individual colours that they buy, the store needs to sell four before they make any money on them. Secondly, the 5.8% increase is roughly the difference between the trade price being 52% of RRP and 55% of RRP. If the store sells at RRP then their gross margin is reduced from 48% to 45%, a reduction of 1/16th. If the store sells at 20% off RRP, then their gross margin is reduced from 28% (of RRP) to 25% a reduction of more than one-tenth of their gross margin.
It's typical of GW's short-termist thinking that they look at their trade prices and think that it's easy money to sell directly instead of through third-party retailers, but these stores also act as advertising for them, and for a lot of people they will prefer to see some things in person before buying. I also find that I tend to make a lot more impulse purchases in person than online.

    • @timothyharnedy4495
      @timothyharnedy4495 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh, and one more thing, the trade price for codices/battletomes is 60% of the RRP. I guess this is because GW don't print the books themselves., so to get the margins they are used to on the models, they take a greater share of the RRP (even though the RRP is silly high for them).

Back in the day GW told 3rd party stores if they sold GW products for unauthorized sale prices GW would cut them off.
And with GW again raising prices for someone (retailer or consumer) we see again the folly of shareholders demanding not just profits but increased profits every quarter. And that doesn't allow for long-term growth, which is the problem. The stock market was made for long term growth, you buy a stock and hope in months or years time it grows in value and you sell it. But with the advent of day traders and instant gratification investors want their money now. And it's not just GW, you can see this happening in almost every industry from companies like CDPR to Disney. So yes, lowering margins and prices to increase customer purchasing power and affordable entry is absolutely the right move for long term growth. Unfortunately the majority of GW stockholders don't care about that, they want their money now.

Yeah well the socialist money system also encourages these types of expectations. In addition to that, it is a bad idea to praise a company for freezing their prices when they’re doing that by using cheap overseas labour in a country with an awful human rights record and no transparency at all about how the people making their sprues are treated.

@@mtozzi92 Oh, the older stuff was rad! I'm an avid Fantasy player, both wargame and RPG. Nowadays, you can't really find models for it (unless you proxy/kitbash) outside of online second-hand places, like ebay though, which coincidentally is a massive contribution to me having stopped buying from GW altogether.

@@krinkrin5982 knightmare miniatures has some stuff very in spirit with the older minis. Free shipping right now too. I like some of the newest stuff but yeah a lot just doesn't have as much character for me personally.

It is because independent retailers undercut GW`s own stores/webshop they want the prices to be the same, F:ex my local Sci-Fi bookstore charge 5% or so less then the GW store 500 meters away (and also have alot larger assortment of GW products) and also have "stamp booklets" where 10 stamps at 200SEK/each(about 20USD) gives you 100SEK back - about another 5% discount.

With certain agreements that stores make with GW they're actually only allowed to drop their prices a certain amount. I forget what it's called but it's basically a contract stating "Okay, we'll sell you our product, but you can't drop the price more than 15%." That's why you see that as the standard discounted price almost everywhere.

...but where do players go to play if the LGS closes? I don't know many places that would allow you to setup an 8x4' table with map and terrain...

Prices, that's the economic climate. The RRP is one thing, but remember that most places sell at a discount for GW prices, up to 25% lower. So ultimately the price could be raised at a percentage of RRP and still give a discount, plus still make a decent margin for the independent retailers. It's not as bad as you think, I buy my stuff from independents because of the other stuff I play but if I am in GW and need stuff on the spot I get it there.
