  • Will is here to talk through the character creation process in the Savage Worlds RPG system. This video covers both the Explorer's Edition and the Adventure Edition side-by-side, and gives some advice on the things we tend to do when making characters.

I love when systems let you fully flesh out your character’s flaws as well as their strengths. Picking out powers is fun but deciding that your veteran adventurer lost an eye as well as most of their hearing in their travels brings them to life in a big way.

I completely agree Jinx! We here at Downtime Activities find that it is the flaws that give the most life to our characters.

Haven't played in close to 20 years and am now starting a Necessary Evil playthrough with my roommate and his son. This has been very helpful at jogging my memory.

Good overview. Nice of you to cover both editions. I do wish they'd kept the archetypes in the SWADE book, but I guess the page count didn't allow it. I still have my other books, so for me it's not exactly a loss.

Thank you for this. Simple and to the point makes research so much easier.

8:43 you said, "If you take 4 wounds you are incapacitated" but the book says if you take -3- wounds you are Injured. Did this change? I'm using the Pathfinder Savage Worlds rules.

Not familiar with the Pathfinder Savage Worlds rules specifically, but in both the Explorer Edition and the Adventure Edition, the rules state that a Wild Card (players and important named NPCs) can take three Wounds and still function, while any further damage doesn't cause a Wound but incapacitates them. I don't know if this got changed for the Pathfinder mashup or not, but that's something I'll have to look into.

Any reason to pony up for Adventure Ed. over getting the Explorer's Deluxe for ten bucks?

To be honest, I don't think there is much point to opting for Adventure Edition over Explorer's Deluxe. The changes made between them were fairly minor anyway, and I think (this is obviously just an opinion) that the Explorer Deluxe Edition contains more content and is a better laid out rule book overall. Unless outside forces are pushing you to get Adventure Ed. (parity with a play group, etc.) I don't think you'll have any issues here going with the cheaper option. Hope this helps!

I find Adventure Edition more "modern" than Explorer's. There isn't much difference between these two but Adv. Ed. looks more noob friendly for me, with more easy to understand and run rules. At least for me and a friend of mine, we both read Explorer's Edition first and disliked, a year later we got Adventure Edition and we loved. So maybe the things is how the system is presented to you, both don't do in the same way.

I would absolutely agree that both rule books don't present the rules the same way despite being essentially the same system, and I would also agree that Adventure Edition was probably written with new players in mind. I suppose I just didn't notice it at the time since we here at Downtime Activities have been playing a variety of RPGs for years and have just gotten used to muddling through new systems for the first time. I think overall your point is a valid one.

It would be a super informative video, but I can't listen to it because of the super annoying background "music". I tried. :(
