I'd like to see what a room full of people who have been under the mental health act would vote.

The problem with the mental health act in scotland is that we have no human rights. Whatsoever.

@1:01:41 this is a great point that I think deserved a response.
Additionally the implementation of the act is the code of practice that would be amended surely? @1:03:50

It's not the hospitalization that's the problem. It's the psychiatric treatments themselves, which can cause or exacerbate problems, leading to severe health conditions, if the system was changed from drugging or electro shock, to genuinely helpful therapies, patients wouldn't be so afraid to go into a hospital, thereby reducing the amount of people being sectioned in the first place.Psychiatrists are so busy poisoning and frying their patients brains, that they have become the modern Dr Frankensteins, its not surprising there is so much mental illness, as much of it is created by the so called treatments.

For some people medications and electroconvulsive therapy are the only things that have been tried to help them. Some do not want to enter any sort of therapy at all as it can be difficult for them. Treatment can only do so much. What about the wider society, communities that people come from? How could they help people with mental illness? But in general communities do not help people with mental health problems. They are left to services to try and help them. It's easy to remark on how treatments are ineffective in such a generalised way. But what therapies would help with moderate/sever schizophrenia? What therapies help someone in the height of mania/hypomania/psychosis or the depths of someone in the deepest of depressions? Medications do work for some people and ECT does work for some people. Try not to generalise due to your view on psychiatry. I have a keen interests on therapies and do understand where you are coming from. But to generalise that medications and ECT cause or exacerbate problems is just misguided.

@@CAMBi07Unfortunately so many people are misguided and uninformed about the many nuances and complexities of mental disorders therefore they speak mostly from an emotional place. Whilst there are adverse effects of treatment there is most times a net benefit of reducing a person's danger risk to themselves & others.

The reason physical health is different it’s due to the fact that people with mental health issues, physical health isn’t being looked at as professionals are more concerned with their mental health issues not taking into account their physical health issues.

I have never met or heard a drug addict or mentally ill person admit they need help, until they’ve exhausted all thier Human Resources ie, family and loved ones approve of any of the help they receive . Nobody ever talks about the families that pay a very high price right along with thier loved ones. It’s always the right of those sick an debilitated to make a healthy healthy decision. Such vague criteria to determine who is capable.Of making the decision to accept help. It all needs to be reformed, all of it! The only one who dosent know they’re sick are the sick! Time for technology to boot the system

The act is clearly taking advantages of people who are been section, this includes 135/136 but particularly 136 the police right. An individual is stating their behaviour is due to an unfor😢incident that leads to the present behaviour. These individual isn’t been listening to yet the have been injected with depo, in my opinion I think it’s completely wrong and it’s against their basic human right. The 136 needs to be revisited .

There are more members of parliament than there are views for this video! It's been 5 months, you'd think that at least those who possessed an interest in the topic might have seen this quite prestigious debate... but it seems not even political aides are doing their research/homework (unless of course they are physically present, in those cases I apologize)
Why is this the most formal debate on this matter in recent years?
(There was an Oxford debate on mental health in 2017 which is available on TH-cam but it was a panel comprising of a bi-polar author & speaker, two charity starters who suffered some disorder in university and an academic who's primary response was to "signpost" relevant charities and non profits.)
I honestly am just writing this as the intros are done... But I can say already, at least you brought some less biased panelists.

One those "compulsory treatments" they're talking about (in contravention of EU law) is chemical castration.
Which is out right proven to increase offending behaviour while absolutely diminishing sexual capacity and creating new incidences of depression.
The mental health act (ironically) might be my only chance to obtain real help for my problems...but will certainly cause friction against mandatory treatment programs.

Yes, you make some very good points. I think we have to try share this video to gather more interest. Personally i think those affected by the mental health act just do not know about the video, let alone changes in the mental health act.
