    Steering shaft on the driver's side #4 is in the way. Charge pipe on #2 is in the way. Releasing it on the top side gives you enough play to get to the glow plug and get it out. The steering shaft is supposed to come apart for #4 but I couldn't get mine to separate. I got lucky and got it out and got the new one in. Absolutely use the never seize. Good video. The glow plugs are running $30 for AC Delco now so I'm replacing them as they fail. I would be careful with anything aftermarket if the electrode breaks off it will grenade your motor and that gets expensive to save a few bucks. Thanks for this video, it's always nice to have a reference before doing this job.

      Auto lite was the only ones available when I bought them. Struggled for thirty Minutes to get the wires tight before the plug fell apart. When and got NGK right side completely changed in 5 minutes. DON’T USE AUTOLITE!

    Really appreciate the little things in the video. For example pointing them all out with a laser and telling us all the sizes needed. It's a big help and also nice to see before you do if your just a weekend warrior or someone learning. Keep it up!

    Great video. Helpful hint to those who only have the number 8 plug out. You can access from underneath the truck without taking off wheel well plastic (which is a pain). Only tricky part is getting the new one lined up. Look carefully where it is when it comes out. It is right next to a fairly big bolt. And you can see the machining in the block from the wheel well side that contours to the shape of the plug.
    Note, it helps to have scrawny forearms like mine. Steve Garvey and Popeye type guys might have some trouble.

    Trick to NOT lose the small nut on top of glow plug - place a small piece of electrical tape (sticky side down on socket) over the end of 11mm socket. force the nut in. It will stay in until you remove it. then easily extract it with finger nails. One piece of tape did all 8 plugs easy. Use this to put them back on as well - saved me a lot of time and risk of losing a key part.

    This is a wonderful video very informative. I'm looking because I just got myself a dyramax and I like to do all of my own maintenance and I have only changed the glow plugs in a 94 detroit diesel. With that said I made the mistake of putting something on the threads when reinstalling them. DONT PUT ANY THING ON THE THREADS OF A GLOW PLUG!!! I had to immediately replace the ones on my 94 because if it. And it's harder to see in the duramax without a wait to start time. The glow plugs grown on the block .

    Great to see this. Had a P0677 code so need to change #7. Came out easy but the new one going in would not go in like it should. This is a 2011. Mic'd the shafts and found a few thousands difference in the main shaft in front of the threads but the real problem was the glow shaft. it also was 3 to 4 thousands to large. Stuck the plug in a drill and used sandpaper to reduce the diameter. Thanks again Brian!

    Love that Ron Paul poster in the background. Also, your hose clamp puller is for the spring loaded types of hose clamps. Great tutorial, have to do one of mine on my 2008, on the driver's side. I gather I'll just change to one considering the mess on that driver's side.

    She actually had her baby on Wednesday and things went easy/great and they're both home now. If you're not towing anything heavy, I'd get a 1/2 ton gas truck. If you're towing anything 10K lbs or more it's best to get a 3/4 ton diesel.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Diesel engines don't have spark plugs because the compression is so high it ignites the diesel fuel automatically with heat and pressure. Starting the diesel is a problem. The glow plugs work like the grid on a windproof lighter to help the motor to get started. Once the motor is running, it can let the glow plugs go offline electrically till the next starting cycle.

    Great walk through on a P0676. Kudos on sound, light, and def the laser. One thought- good idea to ohm test the plug first to make sure it's not the circuit or module? If so, what should range be?

    • @jacobrauscher8806
      @jacobrauscher8806 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very helpful video! Thank you! I got a code saying the #7 glow plug needs to be replaced. My question is this: Should I go ahead and replace all 8 now or just replace #7? I bought this truck used from a widow whose late husband did all his own mechanic work and she has no maintenance records about the truck. It is a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel 6.6 Duramax. What would you do?

  • @briansmobile1

    I found an online seller for these Napa glow plugs, but he limits them to 6 at a time...for a Duramax. I can't see the logic in that. Anyway, I am about to start this project, and I'll do the hard side all at once just so that I don't have to open that side up again. I will do the easy side when I get the other two plugs.

      I'm sure you figured it out by now, but for anyone else searching for the answer: I just took a ratchet strap and wrapped it around the steering shaft. With a little bit of downward pressure, I was able to fit a 3/8" drive 12mm deepwell socket in there no problem. I also used a short extension so the ratchet clears.

    • @nordicpride9708
      @nordicpride9708 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For anyone else having this issue, you must remove the bolt on the steering shaft, keeping the steering wheel stationary, and push up on the upper shaft after the bolt is removed. This will push it up and out of the lower shaft. The lower shaft will now hang down towards the frame and out of the way so you can remove #4 glow plug with ease. Re assemble, and assure the bolt is very tight! Do not use a ratchet strap to pull the steering shaft as this will damage it

    P.O. 670 glow
    Plug module. Have you changed it or had come across this code . What was the process of checking . I don’t know or understand how to use or read a multi meter . I have 1 never grasped it .

    will this video apply to 02 GMC Sierra with the duramax? I have been driving mine with the check engine light on for 65K miles and it is now at an overall odometer reading of 206K miles. I bought it 7 or 8 years ago and the light was on when I bought it so I don't know how long it has been on overall Several mechanics have said that it is the fuel injector but a mechanic told me today that it is the glow plugs.

    How do you know which one to replace? GM dealership quoted me $380 for the work done but I am not sure which one(s) I should replace.

    With a 2011 duramax with 85,000 k , one glow plug needs replacement . Would you do them all at this stage or just as needed ?

    Another great job and addition to your great collection of videos! Question: Have you ever had one snap off when trying to get it out? If so, what is the protocol after that?

    I have a question...can I just replace one side of go plugs and not have to do all 8? Cylinder 3 is out and triggering my check engine light.

    I would either try a reverse drill bit, and / or a drill bit and an easy out

    on the 6.6 the fuel filter should be changed every month to prevent injector failure! If it does not get changed often the fuel will contaminate the pistons and you will then be putting in 8 new injectors! I know this because I work for GM!

    Hey brian, have a 2002 f150 4.2 v6, while in drive and reverse it stumbles very hard nearly to point of a stall, occasionally it will stall. I've put a new pcv hose on it and various other things. Doesn't do it while driving or in park. I'm suspecting a vacuum leak, any ideas? Thanks.

    How do you remove the steering column on the drivers side to get it out of the way???

    • @calvinearl4676
      @calvinearl4676 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need to remove the steering column or shaft - just gently pry it out of the way with a small pinch bar. It only needs to move a little.

    Does the check engine reset itself or you actually need to reset with the scanner
