Had this idea 20 years ago my design was different in that it was a vacuum insulated pressure vessel with quartz sight glass and a carbon rod in the pressure tank
there is a recessed cone shaped void in the carbon rod so that you would be hitting the center of the rod not just the surface and you can gravity feed the water to maintain your back pressure with a check valve. Furthermore don't forget the importance of mirrors you could drill a hole in the center of your dish and instead of having your pressure vessel in front of the dish it is behind the dish using parabolic mirrors

  • @PigMine6

The problem with that steam engine is it has a two-way valve so the forces balance or cancel each other until a major difference in pressure. You need to put a one way valve system on it so air can only flow in one direction

Dude, all you really need is to talk with a knowledgeable thermal engineer and many of your bad guesses will no longer be necessary.
You figured out the thermal coefficient of aluminum and water. Why did you stop there? The pressure/thermal properties of many materials are freely available online. Start there and find appropriate materials for your parts. By the way, when steam leaves your primary heating chamber (receiver), you must be sure to insulate your line all the way to your steam engine intake. A great deal of energy is lost by cooling if you fail to do this. Second, ditch that reciprocating leaky mess and go straight to a very efficient Tesla turbine. You won't regret it. You will need a small pressure tank between the receiver and the turbine to allow for pressure smoothing and volume adjustments. Remember, each stage of your system must be checked for energy losses. This goes all the way to your generator!. You can botch up the whole project by loosing a little here and a little there. Using steam can be a very interesting and enjoyable energy transfer medium. But, the main drawback is being diligent to reduce ALL losses in the whole system. If you choose to continue using glass, be absolutely sure you are using pyrex high temperature glass, like the type used in baking. NO more low-temp untempered crap. Steel works very well. Just blacken a small patch with soot from a flame to accept your solar energy . Keep it very thin. Use rock wool as the insulating blanket around your steel receiver. Use copper tubing from the steel receiver all the way to your Tesla turbine jet injector. Insulate this tubing with rock wool covered in aluminum foil. Remember to thermally insulate the part that holds your receiver or it will bleed off a huge amount of energy right at the receiver! Best to hold it with two hose clamps outside the insulation blanket. Do the same with the copper tubing going to the turbine. Follow this advice and you will have half of a good electric generating system. The other half is the generator and regulator and beyond.

@@CountryBoyMakinNoise Well caleb the design is more or less for day time consumption. Most of your household electronics (depending on what they are consumption wise) don't always have the need to be on, either you'll be at work or at some other location at a certain time, leaving your items around the house to be in an idle charge, the kinetic energy created by your generator unit(s) provide a collective source of energy that should be stored in a battery terminal that will more than likely provide in home reserve for events like black out or constant use with some sell back to the city power system if you really wanted.

I need a steam engine that operates a water pump to feed a water trough for a cattle ranch. We have an abundance of wood. This would be really good to design. Water transportation is vital for cattle production and electricity is too expensive to use and gasoline is outrageous.

    • @TheDIYScienceGuy
      @TheDIYScienceGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes but in an oven it's because of thermal stress, not pressure. Still not very safe to use a glass bottle as a pressure vessel. 🤓 (if you don't want the bottles to explode while heating it up in an oven, you need to put the bottle in the oven while the oven is still cold and than turn it on and let the temperature slowly rise)

    • @esyralessyrelia4133
      @esyralessyrelia4133 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheDIYScienceGuy Yes you are right, I didn't really think about the pressure since the bottle did seem strong enough for a not completely closed system from which I didn't really expect that high of a pressure. and I thought you referenced to the large temperature difference at the focal point(and the thickness of the glass). but a bottle exploding from pressure would most likely indeed do more damage.

  • @WhatDadIsUpTo

Great idea in general, but you are doing it the hard way. I have a circular tracking concentrating mirror, which weighs, including the boiler filled with water, less than 3 lb and concentrates 12 running feet by 8 in of sunlight down to a line. On a clear day, it makes more steam then I can use. I run the steam through a turbine and a reduction transmission, then to a generator, which makes enough electricity to run my air conditioner for free in the summer on clear days.

Cover the tank with clay cob made with that rock wool and char it up so it's black. It will boost your thermal capabilities a bit. It may shock you to learn this but water boils at 30c in a vacuum and returns to liquid at 29c the expansion rates are the same no matter how the water boils. This means in a closed system you can run a steam engine off heat from the sun and endothermic from water sources you could even run an air conditioner use the heat to boil water and the cold to return it to liquid.

A Stirling engine doesn't require boiling and would be my choice.
You could use a solar water heater with your reflective mirror, use convective pumping, and pump it through a coil on the Stirling engine.
The question is, per space and for the dollar would such a setup provide more energy than a solar panel? It's got quite a few more losses, however the reason I was thinking of this route is at night, you could route the hot water from a stove of some sort.

Try to make a container that you heat with the water in it. The water and the container must heat together to produce steam. Then you need level control to introduce new water to maintain that level as it evaporates. However your intake water must also be preheated to prevent cooling of your boiler. Furthermore you must ensure that all condensate is removed from your line or else you will simply cool down the water to steam. It must also be insulated as mentioned by Zetacon 4. Even a normal boiler would struggle to maintain steam pressure if you constantly added cold water as you would simply be cooling down your boiler. Hope this helps

It is easy to make some steam, even with solar heat. It is more complicated to make steam at sufficient power and volume to do work. To do that, you need some more components.
First, the boiler should be constructed to withstand at least several bars of pressure. You need to proof test the boiler at twice the design pressure, at a minimum. You also need safeties, or pressure relief valves. They pop off at a set pressure to prevent dangerous overpressure of the boiler. You need a feed tank and feed pump. The feed pump must be able to pump a modest amount of feedwater to the boiler at the boiler's operating pressure. Then you need a recirc pump, which does not need to be able to pump against the boiler's pressure. Because this is not a typical watertube boiler fired with liquid petroleum fuel, maybe you can get by with no recirc pump, I don't know.
So the boiler gets feedwater, converts it to steam. Steam needs to get to the engine, whether steam turbine or steam piston engine. There, the expanding steam can do work, and there it loses much of its heat. This is why steam under significant pressure and temperature at a significant volume are needed. After passing through the engine, the dead steam passes through a condenser. The condenser is a heat exchanger and some of this heat can be used for preheating feedwater or in the case of a conventionally fired system, heat the fuel oil. The drop in temperature pulls a slight vacuum, increasing flow through the engine and work performed. The condensate is then moved by a condensate pump to the feed tank. This is a closed system but inevitably there will be leaks. If care in maintaining water chemistry is not exercised, chloride levels can rise to unacceptable levels. Along the way there are other parisitic loads such as lube oil circulation pumps, lube oil purifiers and fuel oil purifiers which of course you do not need, and utility or hotel steam for running auxillary equipment.
Even with all of these additional loads, efficiency is increased by increased pressure and volume of steam through optimization of the cycle.
I almost forgot. You need either some way to maintain boiler water level in a set range so the boiler does not run dry but also water does not excape into the steam header, or else a steam separator of some sort to send the steam oward but return boiler water to the boiler. You do not want water in the steam outlet.

Aside from leaks, I can see one additional issue for your project. Your incoming water supply may be at too low a pressure to counter that being produced by the steam. A simple solution is to run the copper tubing into the bottle and allowing it to fill the bottle from the bottom instead of from the top. Once you also increase your water pressure to sufficient levels and address all the leaks you should see some limited success with this design. Just remember that your incoming water pressure must counter the outgoing steam pressure or you will get reverse water flow into your water source.
The most efficient way to generate the needed water pressure is via a water tower that is sufficiently high above the boiling chamber and that is maintained at a sufficient volume of water so that it's weight/height differential can be balanced via valves to your steam pressure output. Finally by running your steam exhaust back up to your tower, at least part of that exhaust steam can be cooled to reclaim and reuse water. This will help to minimize the energy cost of running water up to the tower.

There was many expert mechanics around my shop and they had laugh on me but I had start work on my steam engine and the third day I invited all those mechanics to watch my engine running and then they was surprised and I had seen their face was smiling but they was ashamed on their attitudes that they was laughing but I prove them my spiritual skill. That was an antique design in steam engines still I have in my junk store.

Take a garden funny pipe or copper pioe if you can work it out then put it as a coil all over the TV dish. No need to polish the dish. Let the sun hit the whole dish with its area coiled. You will get immense ammount of heat without making a receiver. The whole dish will be the reciever.

To use a glass boiler you obviously wanted to show us an explosion, so let's see it. You'll need more than 180c to run that engine. I stretched a silver emergency blanket over a 20" truck rim with the back filled in with chipboard, sealed airtight with silicone. Suck a certain amount of air out and had a great mirror that melted sheet lead in 10 seconds. Go large and keep your boiler volume down is the key.

I been planning something like this for a WHILE!! I was thinking focous about 4-6 dish, on about 1cubic foot box, with internal fins, to allow more surface area. I want to spin a small turbine, if I could generate 10-20 amps it would be great! For my 24v system, I want to use radiators inside, to heat my house, (somewhat!) And condense the steam i may use a wood stove to help this along! But 500-600 watts when there is NO sun would be awesome! Maybe have a multiple stage , compound system, where water is slowly pumped and heated in about 300-400cc chambers, in front of a dish, maybe a Fresnel lense on the opposite side, all tracking, surely by the end it will just be super heating the steam! And I just about bet money, a brass, or copper box would work much better, I tried all kinds of matereals with my soldering iron, the copper tip was the only one that worked! The aluminum cooled so fast it was useless!! Maybe you can find a large plumbing fitting, like a 2" tee, and some plugs, and drill and tap for smaller fittings, just thinking, my iron got hot enough the copper glowed in dim light, but wouldn't melt solder, with anything else, thermal dynamics, will always win!!

I appreciate your attempt to make a working "Solar Concentrator System (SCS)" however your polished metal parabolic mirror is not reflective enough so you lose a lot of the Sun's Rays thus leading to low temperatures. So here's my idea making for a actual working SCS that will melt bricks: which is enough heat generated to make salt molten.
    1. Alter you metal parabolic shaped dish to one that will concentrated heat 5 to 6 feet from the SCS.
    2. Using 2-3 sheets of mylar coated with pure gold; permanently glue it onto the dish using a closed suction vacuum process; make sure the solid gold side is facing towards your concentration point). This vacuum process is used in carbon fiber products like race cars, surf boards, and etc. Again, make sure you apply your gold mylar plated sheets onto the disc's whole parabolic side. This coating helps reflect thermal heat from the sun light and extend the life of your SCS.
    3. Using a high temperature inorganic based adhesives such as ceramic threadlockers, which can resist up to 650 °C , glue 1" squared glass mirrors onto the dish.
    4. Make sure to use a laser to confirm each mirror is aimed precisely at the exact concentration position. This way all the light reflected will be used.
    5. Use glass products like Robax Brand Heat-Resistant Glass that is resistant up to 1400 Degrees Fahrenheit which costs $69.95 for a section.
    5. Then create a heat box 11" height x 8" wide x 3" deep made of ceramic coated high tensile steal which will be used to heat and circulate the molten salt to gravity fed underground tanks.
    6. Use a 3 walled hyper vacuum thermal barrier and outer spraying insulation to miniimize thermal conductivity (aka heat loss).
    7. Using a solar powered air compressor and an inert gas to increase the air pressure in the molten salt tank. This would compress the salt that opens a pressure sensitive valve that will allow a steady stream of molten salt out to create instant stream to power steam electric generators. Make sure all pipes use a double walled hyper vacuum thermal barrier to maximize pipe insulation until the Unsheilded molten salt pipes enter a second box that injects water into it as the molten salt circulates through the box thus creating copious amounts of flash steam. The steam is then injected into the steam electric generators to cause them to spin at High revolutions.
    8. Using powerful electro magnets you can have the steam generator to spin friction free thus extending the life of your generator and reducing its maintenance costs.
    9. Then use a water vapor condenser that is coated with MIT's new super hydrophobic coating to quickly convert stream vapor back to water in a closed system.
10 the whole thing is attached to a circular solar tracking system to maximize the sun striking on the pipes filled with salt. Once the salts become heated to optimal temps, this triggers a heat sensor that activates a vacuum pump to flush the heat box of any molten salt. Gravity is then used to send the into underground holding tanks to be used at a later time!

Given the size of the steam engine and the diameter/length of the connecting tube, he needs a much much much larger bottle that holds enough water to 1. Maintain a constant pressure level inside the bottle that 2. Can sustain a line pressure suitable to drive the piston of the steam engine. If he reduces the inside diameter of the tubing down to a single millimeter, and cuts the length down to a few centimeters rather than the current near meter, the bottle shown MIGHT transfer enough pressure to move the piston 3 or 4 strokes before all the water is gone.

You need to compensate for the shadow casted by the jar setup stealing too much solar energy from your main parabolic dish. May I suggest you create an array of multiple parabolic dishes focused on a singular point. This way you always have at least one full parabolic dish surface heating the coils. As a side benefit from multiple parabolic mirrors focused on one point, you will not need as much insulation on your heating setup as you have multiple heating points. Thus reducing the weight on your heating jar.

Pretty sure you'll have to get a better parabolic dish, much wider and with lower focal-point to width ratio, and then only insulate the far side, not the other sides. Basically, you'll add more surface getting hit from the sides. It's the main reason I want to build an English wheel so I can roll my own aluminum parabolas.

With this kind of arrangement you can measure how many W/m2 your dish is capturing. By the way, it is not due to thermal capacity of Aluminium that your water suddenly stop boiling, rather, it is because your dish doesn't supply enough power to the block. Heat capacity , in this case has nothing to do. All you need is a bigger dish.
