  • Everyone can tell you that the cheetah is the fastest land animal -but what about in the ocean? Here is a list of the Top 10 verified fastest fish. How do they weigh up against the cheetah's incredible top speed of 68 mph (110 km/h)?

    Top 10 Fastest Fish in the Ocean
    10. Flying Fish (Family: Exocoetidae) - 35 mph (gliding)
    9. Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) - 37 mph (leaping)
    8. Bonito (Genus: Sarda) - 40 mph (leaping)
    7. Albacore Tuna (Thunnus alalunga) - 40 mph (leaping)
    6. Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) - 43.4 mph (leaping)
    5. Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) - 46.35 mph (leaping)
    4. Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) - 47.88 mph (leaping)
    3. Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) - 50 mph (leaping)
    2. Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) - 60 mph (leaping)
    1. Indo-Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) - 68 mph (leaping)
    Honourable mentions: Shortfin mako shark, black marlin, bonefish, tunny, tarpon
    Disclaimer: This list is using only verified speeds taking into account all types of action e.g. swimming, leaping, gliding. This list only takes into account fish and not marine mammals e.g. killer whales. It is claimed that fish such as the Black Marlin (Istiompax indica) can reach incredible speeds (80 mph or 129 km/h) however these speeds have only been estimated based on how fast a fish can initially strip a fishing line.

  • @mheb6370
    @mheb6370 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The Black Marlin is estimated to have a top speed of 80mph. Their speed has been measured by how quickly they strip line off a fishing reel when hooked.

    • @fisherman7834
      @fisherman7834 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      now heres the thing why that could be an inaccuracy. It was measured on an overhead fishing reel, the pull of the fish could have caused the spool of the reel to accelerate quicker than the line being stripped, giving a wrong result (birds nest basically)

      None of those speeds for the sailfish and similar species are reliable, as its based upon an unreliable method of clocking speed. Actual timed speeds show much lower numbers, and i have never seen a Marlin or Sailfish swim at the reported speeds with which they were claimed, even when hunting prey.

    Makos where THEORIZED to go up to 70 mph or more but some scientists do question that because of the bodily limits of the shark but that speed does make more sense especially when different kinds of sailfish and indo Pacific sail fish are found in there belly's along with some other fish on the top ten like tuna and such but that speed definitely makes sense for me because the mako is chasing them down taring there tails off and then eating them and seeing that the fastest a mako has even been documented was 46 mph that's really hard to believe how that can catch up to a indo Pacific sailfish going 68 mph which is obviously much fast unless there ambushing there prey which makes more sense but otherwise no plus since makos generally are pelagic species of shark meaning they live in the open ocean and sometimes get closer to coastal regions when the food its abundant it could be possible we haven't gotten to see these sharks at the full speed and just small burst and not full on so eh maybe maybe not

      I think it's a rumor. There are several types of fish in salt and fresh water, some of which can withstand up to several hours without water. The sturgeon is an example of this. There are moray eels and a species of shark that can crawl over land for a short time at low tide and so can hunt crabs and fish better from pond to pond.

    Yeah I'm going to say it. Let's just hope that the Megalodon is not in those Waters. Would it be nowhere as fast as the sailfish but i'll say close to 45- 50mph. Just a little bit slower than Jason Statham. I got a pretty good imagination, hell I play Minecraft. Lol. Never know...... Probably
