      it's still incredibly far from the final release. they barely released a handful of classes, and i don't think even half the map is completed, but it does look good.

    As an avid mmo player I can't state how much I appreciate this hybrid system. Running away from a few mobs or people in pvp and shooting at their dps only to find myself tabbing 5 times in order to target the warrior type so I can cast a slow/stun type ability only to tab 5 times more to go back to my original target is very archaic. Cursor soft lock would definitely be very helpful for ranged classes maybe even melee classes with charge / movement abilities.

    You forgot to mention about the option to change from tab target mode to action combat mode and the different advantages they provide but a very good cover non the less! So happy that they are going in this direction and the urge to play this game i currently reaching at astronomical levels! Keep the good work up my Copium inhaling friend! :)

      Advantages of playing with tab is you get to play with others, and never gave to aim.
      The advantage of playing true action without a lock-on is that you have to aim, and will be immediately kicked from any serious group of players for wasting their time and not taking the sure-fire shots.

    The combat and environment looks amazing. Ashes really seems like it's going to be everything I've wanted in an MMO, mashing together the best parts of some of my favorite MMOs over the years. As it pertains to ammunition/arrows, I think it would be cool to let basic arrows be unlimited but allow us to craft different arrow types/coatings that add additional status effects or damage buffs

      No this would cause the normal arrows to be obsolete in both PvE and PvP.
      According to the additional damge/status effect: I think this will mostly be covered by the themed enhancement of the skills/attacks through your second archetype. E.g. Ranger as first archetype -> bow abilities from the video, mage as second archetype -> makes abilities do elemental damage (or rogue second -> poison damage etc.)

    Looking great so far.
    Even though I always play melee classes - I can't deny that the archer is already looking fun to play.
    Also I was absolutely mesmerized by the environment and the atmosphere of the world.
    Really loving the direction they're going and hope that they will continue to succeed and bring a fucking amazing banger of a MMORPG to life.

    No problem with unlimited arrows but I hope it will be possible to craft quivers with a type of arrow perhaps. I would love to see crafting or skills required to heal not just auto heal up after every fight.

    Regarding ranged combat, one of the things that games don't quite get right is terrain blocking your ranger arrows erroneously, plus having ranged just fire through rocks and walls when it's obvious that the ranged arrows should be blocked be them, but they're not. I hope they can polish this up and have it be more accurate/consistent compared to other games.

    It looks exactly the type of "action" combat that's good for an mmorpg. You can be more "fluid" with targetting by free shotting mobs but then you can lock on them and create a situation where rotation is more important and not the aiming itself.

      No, this is good for carebears who can't aim and want to include friends who say they prefer action combat.
      Again, this isn't action combat, this is tab targetting, with auto aim, that claims to have an action combat mode as well.
      In pvp, this will be broken and ranged will have an even bigger advantage.

      Warfighter Army This game does not aim to be 100% action combat. If you haven't accepted that at this point, it's up to you to consider whether to keep an eye on this game or give up and move on to another that is really action combat only.
      AoC combat system is HYBRID. As I posted elsewhere, it works perfectly in games like BnS (only real eSport MMORPG in the world due to its combat) and is way easier to balance than the randomness that comes from full-manual aim.

    i like that were not having to manage our ammo but i was hoping to get the arrow as an equipment slot with different arrow types for more depths. like broadheads for bleeding dmg for example.

      Yeah armour penetrators, bleed inducers, poisons & even elemental ammo types need to a thing. Don't forget they are developing the base game though whilst we are generally comparing to established & expanded titles. Maybe the quiver item mentioned will encapsulate the modifiers needed to implement the desired ammo effects. Or it's something the team can add in a future expansion.

    i like how excited you are for the range combat to be targetted. cant wait to look at you in the eyes as your soul leaves your body turning into ashes after getting instagibbed by an unavoidable volley of arrows from an archer party and tell you " i told you so". with action combat, at least you would have a chance to dodge, or the enemy could also miss.

    Im really torn when it comes to ammunition. On one hand i hate tracking it and the running out sucks if youre in a raid or whereever. On the other hand i like having different kind of reagents, potions, food etc. to prep before i go on an adventure. Thats part of the core identity of an rpg for me. But i think its probably better for the game to have no ammu because they are tied to the core gameplay of the archer

      its one of those how real in a fantasy do you actually want to be question. At the end they need to pick the option that will help create the most fun. Getting ammo from a town or from gather materials because you forgot not only waste a players time, but it can quickly make being a ranger class a very expensive proffession to be especially if they tie rare ammo types to crafting proffessions.

    My preference for ammo would be to make it similar to weapon oil or sharpening stones in wow. They buff your bow attacks but if you run out you can still shoot

    Saying this was hybrid combat is far stretched. It's standard tab targetting you'd also see in WoW. The only difference is that you can have a crosshair, but thats also just for choosing targets and lets be honest, who is gonna pick that if tab targetting + mouse is just better for targetting.

      Agreed, the ranger seems to have no skill shots apart from his ultimate ability sorta. Maybe they'll add skill-shot abilities down the line? They have the infrastructure from APOC.

      They literally said they will add skill shots that need to be aimed, and they literally talked about how you can use free aim for enemies that are too far for tab target. You can use your cursor to lead the shot on enemies that are far and running away, too far to tab target. That is action combat where it's necessary. I don't know why you losers are crying so much. If you don't like it don't play it.

    I would love to see a ranged combat with a circle reticle that increases in size based on the distance the target is, the further away the smaller the circle is and the closer the larger, using this all the player needs to do is have the circle be on the target for the weapon to hit allowing some grace that even if half the circle is on the target the spells/ranged hit. Heck the circle can even change colour to show that it will be a successful hit. This gives a little assistance that tab targeting would do while also forcing the player to actually have to target manually.

    I want a system that’s at its bare bones action combat with accessibility to less mechanically skilled players that can have tactics, positioning, game knowledge and teamwork of tab target. I see this is not doing that but I hope this is how the riot mmo does it. But I’m still pretty happy with the way ranged combat has came out in ashes especially coming from a ranged class player

    I would like to see more benefit to using the the action combat mode. Something like a 10% damage or crit buff to reward the use of a more engaged style of target acquisition. Considering that if you use this mode you can straight up miss the target. Currently there seems to be hardly if any benefits of using it

      This is why you cant just have ranged be hit or miss by manual aiming and everyone else auto hitting. Generally speaking, you would have to have a hefty bonus if ranged was true action combat, and then pve encounters cant be properly made to be challenging because as a dev you have no basis to what dps players should be shelling out. Really, you would have to be all action combat around for fairness. If manual aiming got too high of a % boost, which it would need to even be viable with the realism of missing a lot and doing 0 damage, then players would cheese things and basically fight melee in their face using most likely larger missiles or say ones with 3 arrows coming out in an arc to burst pve enemies/players down instead of playing at range where more skill is needed due to higher miss chances and a loss of dps. Due to this I really dont see true manual aiming as viable. Missing is a massive disadvantage.
      Basically, ideally each dps class can potentially do the same dps. If you give too low a boost to manual aiming, no one will ever do it, it will just straight up be far inferior to auto hits. If you give it too high a % boost it then can just fight like melee to ensure hits, but will be far superior in damage due to the big boost. I’m just pointing out a potential issue I see with the whole thing. My only suggestion to fix would be higher damage the further your projectile flies with 3 tiers of distance with max being +30%, and min being +10%. Talents could add an extra 10% if one chose them.

    Instead of traditional "ammo" I believe there should be an ammo "type" that you can equip to your bow (tailored to what type of damage you are looking to do) or different types of ammo that apply different effects.

    Glad it's hybrid combat and not purely tab-targetting. I always prefer having a reticle, even if it's not actual aimed projectiles, since it just makes combat a lot more fluid in my opinion.

      @@escarretada it's basically GW2 combat, -maybe without the auto attack on LMB not sure about that.- Yeah, it's still tab target under the hood, but being able to move the camera with a fixed reticle and being able to go from one enemy to the next without tabbing through it just makes it more fluid in my opinion
      Edit: actually went back and seems like your basic attack binds to your LMB after switching to the reticle

    Snipe feels like the hunter's "Aimed Shot" from wow, you aim it an then it fires a powerful shot at the enemy after a few seconds. I wonder if you can air strike off a cliff by accident or it just won't let you use the ability if there is no space :) it will be funny to see people fall off cliffs because they underestimated how much space they needed

    a bit sad to hear that armunition won't be a mechanic, as i think the way to balance this for melee/mages would be durability ( giving smiths something to repair is always great in my opinion ).
    Else, seemed great, big fan of that snipe ability! always enjoyed slow but impactfull strikes a sniper has , and the effects was great when used. However, what i could cretisise it for, would be that shakeing of the camera, it feels a bit too much.

    Yes, casters replenish their resource. Most martials build their resources.
    Why should ranged bow be the outliers with purchasable ability resources?

    I think it looked great as well. Obviously needs more fun abbilites tho. One thing I did not like was how they changed the empyrean. I think they looked great in that first reveal. They changed them to look more rough. But it's a bit too early to judge. I'm sure it will be good when you can make your characters in the end.

    I do prefer tab targeting mod because i dont have to be always worried if i'll miss the atack or not, PvE becomes less stressfull this way.
    But i could care less for combat mechanic, i can only hope my char can cast habilities and atack while moving. Guild Wars 2 made the best mix between action and targeting mode, and i love it.
    The real concern here is how they will keep the game engaging community wise.

    some quivers that dont need arrows like Legolas .. type of quiver would be nice and let the players try to find that type of quivers etc...

    No idea why people always forget that Steven doesnt want to show everything on their stream. Wait for alpha 2 and streamers stream the game. I assume some of the skills are tab heavy oriented and others are more action combat oriented. A secondary class can even affect ur game play. Even then i trust the dev team to create something epic and memorable to each class. Take every stream slowly, this is just ALPHA 2, we will get more changes.

    I feel like Steven should not be the one to control the character during a gameplay reveal as it would definetly make for a better showcase, aswell as not distract him from what we actually want him to do....which is talking, reacting, directing.

      I kind of understand what you are saying, but i disagree. Having a pro gamer showcase a class by weaving in combos and with fast movements will show full potential.
      But if the game launches and all Normies who try to replicate what they saw of ranger class from pro player’s perspective will be disappointed ,as they won’t be able to do same thing. They will be turned off and then the leave the game.
      So setting wrong expectations could hurt this game.

    This update renewed my faith in the combat. The last update with the greatsword/daggers was very disappointing to me, it looked incredibly rough after waiting so long. But the ranger looks so much better and more polished, I hope they keep this level of quality for the other classes. One thing that did bother me was how much movement was involved in kiting. I think it would be better to have slower movement, but some slowing attacks to slow enemy speed as well. Not to make kiting any harder or easier, but just to make it so you don't have to run off to africa while fighting one pack of mobs, and to make you feel a bit more grounded in the world and realistic feeling.

      What didn't you like about the melee combat showcase? And I kinda agree with the movement, everyone having huge dashes and gapclosers may not be the best thing. Generally the slower and less mobile a game is, the more tense it is, since you have to think about range and carefully plan ahead instead of just mashing dashes without thinking.

    The skills dosnt look bad, the movement seems more fixed than before, but i think they should do something with Damage numbers.
    Dmage numbers has to feel clear and pleasing. This ones not yet.

    Maybe they could make a class that rewards fps skills instead of trying to make all ranged classes the same. I've seen some games do this and it works out. I dont mind what's been made, so having a few real aiming classes wouldn't hurt anyone.

    I thought the tab-target click/hold-and-press basic attacks, abilities 1 and 2 were cool and felt good, but ability 3 contrasted poorly and felt weird.
    I'm usually not a huge fan of having manual basics, and prefer how they're handled in GW2. While I believe auto/basic attacks have their place, I prefer using more of my abilities vs auto/basic-weaving like in ESO. This gameplay demo is an exception. It made basics and abilities feel great when manual, or hybrid tab-target. I feel ability 3 broke the immersion because if you're going for a manual feel, an ability that complex should be either a combination of keypresses or a combination of abilities that lead to said complex ability (ex. quickshot + basic + quickshot unlocks the next quickshot to transform into ability 3), or have a telegraph-and-drop activation. I dunno, it just hit the uncanny valley for me.
    Stoked to play, either way! Ty for the coverage Narc! :)
    Tldr: Basic attacks, and abilities 1 and 2 felt great manual or tab-target. 3 in particular felt weird to me.
