    I couldn't decide which way to go, so built a beautiful lens collection around my R with its lovely 30 MP sensor, and this last year, for the joy of new bells & whistle and hiking, got an R7 with the two so-so RF-S lenses (18-150mm, 10-18mm). When I'm birding, the "adult" lenses are the ones in the pack, but I'm not heading up the side of a mountain in that scenario (I live in the US Pacific Northwest. Do you apply a crop factor to aperture in addition to focal length when comparing lens sizes?

    • @AnthonyGugliotta
      @AnthonyGugliotta  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The answer is... It depends. If you're shooting from the same position, no... The depth of field is the same. If you instead move positions to keep the framing of your subject the same then yes, the relative depth of field changes, meaning you could in theory apply the crop factor to the aperture setting.

  • @thomasreedy4751
    @thomasreedy4751 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Um … the biggest issue with swapping lenses with APSCs and FullFrames is the lens mount.
    Cannon apsc lenses are not compatible with full frame cameras. However, apsc sigma and Tamron lenses are.
    The only issue is the lens will give a peep hole affect and you need to crop the image in post.
    When you crop images, you lose pixels and your 20mp camera is only 8mp.
    A 45+ mp full frame can be cropped down to a more accessible 12 or so mps you have the built in mode on newer cameras.
    If your genera requires heavy cropping on a full frame camera then an apsc without the cropping may give you a better result.
    And if you buy third party lenses you need to make sure you understand the supplier’s labeling because you may buy an apsc lens if you’re just looking for an EF mount for your full frame.

    Larger pixel doesn't collect more light, but a larger lens does. However, in the end, there is a practical correlation between sensor size and light capturing capability, as I explained in the end of this video th-cam.com/video/0yBOoGgRA78/w-d-xo.html.

    My crop sensor is what, 1 or 1.2 stops worse than full frame? That benefit in low light etc isn't really worth the extra weight of the full frame. Not for me, as I walk for miles in towns with the camera in my hand. Or the extra expense if it's stolen.
    Having said that, I'd LOVE to try medium format for a while. Just for the crazy crispness.

  • @MrLittlecat123
    @MrLittlecat123 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    At technical aspect. My personal thought is Full frame is 1 stop better that APSC. Technically we can say apsc with f1.8 and full frame f2.8 is about the same. But! You can find zoom lens with f2.8 on full frame but you can not find much zoom lens on APSC (only 18-35 f1.8). I would say Full frame if you have money and seeking higher ceilings of equipment. Apsc if you are on budget.

    @DominikMarczuk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    About using crop sensor lenses on full frame. Yes, you get rid of vignetting. Yes, you get rid of a lot of sharpness and CA problems in the corners. But there's a caveat too. Crop sensors typically have a greater pixel density (which of course you mentioned). This means that even in the centre, the image will be softer than on a full frame. Sure, if you buy a high end lens, this might be unnoticeable. But there's a lot of glass where the sharpness difference is really noticeable, especially if your crop sensor has a huge megapixel count (yes, R7, I'm looking at you).

    • @aidanoherlihy1614
      @aidanoherlihy1614 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are there any videos that go into more detail on how the pixel density causes softness? So it sounds like the r7 with the 100-400 would suffer from this? Does this issue extend across the frame or is it just in the centre?

    • @DominikMarczuk
      @DominikMarczuk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@aidanoherlihy1614 it happens across the frame but it's the easiest to spot in the centre, where the lens is the sharpest. As for the videos, I can't remember any specific one but I'd recommend John Frost's channel. Whenever he tests lenses on FF and APS-C, he looks specifically for the signs of softness on APS-C. With some lenses, it's quite noticeable.

    • @AnthonyGugliotta
      @AnthonyGugliotta  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've also heard this argument about more softness in the center. I know for sure I've heard it in an older Tony and Chelsea video? The conversation on IQ can get very nuanced, and almost always requires a case-by-case comparison to compare the resolving power of each specific sensor to its full-frame counterpart. In such a case that's why websites like The Digital Picture exist so you can really pixel peep! :)

    • @DominikMarczuk
      @DominikMarczuk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AnthonyGugliotta Yup. And I think the bottom line should be: do your research before you splurge on any lens ;)

    • @daysandwords
      @daysandwords 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DominikMarczuk You mean Christopher Frost.
      And yes, NO MATTER THE PIXEL DENSITY, the OPTICAL performance of a lens will always be better on a larger sensor, if all else is equal.
      e.g. If you get a $1000 full frame lens and the equivalent $1000 APS-C lens (e.g. 50mm for full frame and 33mm for APS-C), and shoot them with everything optimised... the full frame photo is sharper, so long as there are ENOUGH pixels (12mp is plenty).

The r7 is a crop sensory will give me the ability to do what I’ve already been doing but better. ie. the Fujifilm XF 33 1.4 which is equivalent to a Full frame 50 f2.1. It is already sharp at 1.4 compared to maybe the canon EF 50 1.2 which is as sharp only when you stop down to f2.8, or the canon rf 50 1.8 which is only as sharp if stopped down to f4.0. I don't think they should be called crop sensors, but rather smaller sensors. A "full-frame" camera is technically a "crop" of a medium format camera if you want to use that terminology.

    Resolution IS tied to sensor size under one condition. Resolution ISN'T the number of pixels. Say, you've got a crop sensor and a full frame sensor. Both are 24 Mpix. Is the resolution the same in both? Nope. The number of pixel is. And in this particular example, even though these are two sensors that differ in size, resolution is bigger on the crop sensor. It's because its pixels are smaller, thus on the same square area, say 1 square millimeter, there's a lot more pixels than on 1 square millimeter of the full frame sensor. The smaller the pixels, the greater the resolving power (a.k.a resolution - the ability to resolve detail to a greater extent) is. If you have a 24 Mpix full frame sensor, these 24 millions of pixels is, well..., just a number of pixels this sensor has.

    Full frame is better than crop sensor because manufacurer put best feature/technology in it, not because the sensor size. 😅 ..
    it's proven that apsc camera is way better than full frame camera under the same price.

    If you like sport, wildlife and bird photography, a crop camera is better because of the extra zoom range.
    If you like portraits with shallow depth of field and creamy backgrounds, slightly better low light, sharpness and iso performance, and if this is really inportant to you, go fullframe.

    I think if you are looking at a camera upgrade, you probably shouldn't even consider aps-c. If you are getting your first camera, then maybe, but you can do everything on a full frame anyway, and would want to get there eventually. In the same spirit as you saying its better to get the full frame lens...in case you want to upgrade, but full frames are coming down in price, and as you also pointed out, it is the current standard. ZV-E1 is like $2k, so if you really want to get into photography and buy a brand new system, why not start with full frame? For people who aren't sure if they want to dive into photography, maybe a used camera or an iPhone, before evaluating if they want to get a full frame.
    I look at it like this, would i recommend someone go out and get a DSLR? Prob not, that has been surpassed by mirrorless. So would I recommend APS-C? No, that has been surpassed by full frame.

    I don't hate on crop sensors. I own both. But there really is no argument to be made as far as the advantages of full-frame.
    I can only really see one advantage of crop sensors, that is they tend to be smaller and therefore easier to slot into a pocket or pouch.
    I shoot on a Pentax k1ii. I use a lot of old film cameras and enjoy the full-frame benefits. All of the lenses are backwards compatible.
    My Sony system can benefit from all the legacy Minolta glass even with AF. My Pentax can benefit from all of the legacy Takumar FF and Pentax FA lenses.
    I don't see.many professional photogs using crop sensor.
