I learnt more about boatbuilding in that video than ever before, thank you, that was amazing.!😊
Thanks!
Классная,очень продуманная лодка.Респект конструктору!
Very well explained. I do, however (there is always a 'however') wish there was a section on the ballast keel included.
Very detailed! Lot of materials in a boat of this size, will be incredibly strong. Great job!
How do you buy a kit or plans.
Can it have a bilge keel as I live with 7 metre tidal
It's a problem to have a standard keel.
I look forward to seeing these completed.
amazing. waiting a 10.8meter version then i might consider it !!!
OK, that´s the min.dimension for two and oceans.
careful what you wish for :)
Great design, great 3Dwork!
Would like that a bit extended in length and with a ballasted centerboard as a trailer weekender…
Instablaster...
Hello ! Amazing stuff.
Why use Polycarbonate for the portlights ? It seems they don't resist UV well and with UV protection sheet they don't resist scratches, or i'm i wrong ?
Top, I'm going to build one.
have you finished?
Great looking boat and design!! Looking forward to see how it performs in various conditions!
Wow this is awesome! Any plans to make a coastal cruising variant? With a daggerboard style drop keel? I guess that's not in the scope of this project, but that's what I would build.
Yes that would be nice.
I would like to see you come up with a kit catamaran sorta like the "Woods" Strider or the stiletto 27. A c&c kit might become a big hit?
Thom, thanks for the suggestion!
So very well done!
thanks i really enjoyed that im a master builder now , nah just kidding but that was well done plus its a smart little ship
Very nice - but it feels little bit heavy. What is the weight of ballast and estimated all up weight ?
I am in the middle of building (simple) i550 sport boat - camping style accommodation - fast but definitely not ocean going.....
How anchoring gadgets are stored on this boat ?
The backstay looks in the way of the mainsail and also the tiller. Is this an oversight or just the model issue?
It is a Running backstay and only used in stoms when the mainsail is deep Reefed or with the big gennaker in strong winds...it is rope soft..so OK :)
Mi sembra un bellissimo progetto, molto ben fatto e molto robusto. Secondo te potrebbe essere realizzato in una scala maggiore per una lunghezza di 7,50 m.?🇮🇹👍
Great video. What are the owner/builders saying about their total investments into the 5.80, including sails, spars, electronics, etc?
Seems like about 50-60K for actually getting one into a race. towndock.net/shippingnews/sv-skookum-takes-on-the-world
the scow bow is getting popular these days I would be interested if it would make any difference to performance.
Since the 5.80 design is a one design class and not a box rule class you won't see hull design development with it like you do other box rule classes like the minis. The bluff bow designs are fast because of their beam (power via righting moment) not just due to the bluff bow which is just sort of a byproduct of carrying the beam as far forward as possible. But yes the idea has proven fast in reaching conditions but to get the full benefit you need lots of sail and probably a canting keel. What does lots of sail or "max beam" mean though? Again it really only make sense when thinking about a box rule class that has limits on sizes. There might be a faster hull shape you could build with the same rig but who would you race it against?
Great boat! I really love it and will consider building one. Can you show in some pictures or video the dimensions width/length/height of the various parts of the boat. I would also love to see a version of the same design, but about 7-8 meters long.
I just watched a video on Ran sailing channel about a Polish guy that built a boat from this designer and sailed across the Atlantic. He sold his boat in the caibean and is going home to build an 8M cruiser, also from this designer -so I know the design exists.
Check out the video. Small, fast ,and light and good things, but there is an intrinsic brutality to their function.
Great work... Amazing details included. What is this 3d cad program?
Thank you. The program is called Rhino.
Looks very solid and up to the task. Great job. Who designed?
Great video
Nice plans! Which CAD software are you using? If been working with autodesk inventor professional but that looks more suitable
Great video, the bottom of fame C you explained the notches will be in the lower beam but some of the drawings still show the notches in the side beam? How is the keel going to be attached?
Keel Has 10 x12mm Stainless steel Bolts..NOT welded to the keel so you just undo, push them out, break the seal and take the keel off...both halves of the bolb undo so then two guys can handle each of three parts.. :)
So tempting
Looks like the rudder is cut from flat plywood, I haven't had a close look at the rules but how is foil shaping handled etc
Great video, very clearly demonstrates the thought and effort that went into making this an achievable project for many people despite the overall complexity. Well done.
Thank you! the rudder blade in the parts here was simply meant to be used as a template. If I were building a rudder for this boat it would probably be laminated from quarter sawn wood then cut to the profile and shaped in to the foil shape section shown in the plans before being glassed. The process would be similar to how we build our centerboards only a bit larger. th-cam.com/video/7J0czRfxJk0/w-d-xo.html
If we are asked for it we can supply fully CNC cut and foiled rudders ready to be glassed and finished. We offer this for the centerboard for our larger boat kits.
Hi! Very nice and detailed job. Did you use any plugins for constructing this model in Rhino? Would like to try out designing something smaller as well!
Hi, is it possible to get only the 3D Rhino Frame Files, only need the frame files ?
Thanks
Nice detailed expose of the construction detail. Question - what are the benefits of sloping cabin bulkhead, looks nice but a vertical would stop water dripping into cabin when washboards are out. extending cabin sides back with angle on back edge would cover visual effect,
Very nice design. As I live in South Africa, I would want to cut the parts here to save on shipping. I have access to cnc machines. Would you be prepared to sell me the cad files? as a one-off build.
Adrian,
We do not sell the files. They are property of the class organization and are distributed by them. There is a CNC kit producer in South Africa already. Check the 5.80 website. ckdboats.blogspot.com/2020/05/class-globe-580-kits.html. You may still be able to purchase the files for a one off build but you would have to ask Don.
Couldn't the stem be beefed up by laminating and additional stem to the forward side, after the battens are notched in?
It is, there is a "stem cap" a second layer that goes on after planking.
Im interested to tranfsfer ut into an electric mini cruiser
What software did you use to show the designs?
All done in Rhino
Hello from Italy.
Is it possible to buy only the construction plans without the kit?
Yes, the boat is designed to be built from plans. Purchase plans directly from the Class Globe 5.80 website.
So so Tempting.
Can i buy only the project? i'm from Italy
Check the 5.80 website for cnc cutters near you. I'm not sure if there is an official Italian kit producer but there are some in Europe for sure.
Ballast weight?
The steel keel and lead ballast bulb halves are about 244kg a bit over 500lbs.
@bandbyachtdesigns thanks. And what displacement?
@@eolof7 i'm just reading off their website. Lightship 920kg. It's a class boat so there is a minimum weight i'm pretty sure for racing. classglobe580.com/specification/
@bandbyachtdesigns thanks
Does this design have the option of twin bilge keels instead of a fin keel?
Since the boat is a one design there are no other variations shown in the plans that Januz drew but it would not be too hard to tie bilge keels into the longitudinal bulkheads (bunk sides).
Cool
Je suis minimaliste, mais à à ce point...
La même chose mais de 6m95 de long et 2m80 de large, et avec une quille-sabre et un double-safran, là je signe.
The transom as drawn scares me.
A little credit for the designer maybe?
Always very important. You can see Janusz's name right below the 3d model and again his name with a link to his website is the very first sentence of our webpage on the kit at bandbyachtdesigns.com/classglobe580
I got some idias about this video
Stupid question: how does the weight of the keel not destroy the (wooden) body of the boat?
The wood is strong enough to support the weight of the keel. :)
it's not a stupid question
A true S&G design would be so much easier and faster to build, and could be made just as strong.
It is a very nice design and would make for a fun coastal boat... but a 5.80 is a tortured way to cross an ocean. Capable, but miserable. A 650 should be the minimum .
I don't like the design of a keel. It will snap off due to fatigue and the boat will capsize - like most do. You need a full keel!
