I am an Atheist and I respect Buddhism more than other religions because of the fact it's more of a philosophy than an actual religion. It doesn't tell you: this is evil and wrong with no explanation, instead it's more of a guideline for a happy life.

It's wonderful that the Pope is reaching out in a gesture of peace, love and understanding for those of different faiths which is a sharp contrast to the brutal acts of butchering and thievery done by the crusaders and conquistadors in the previous centuries. This is truly a big step forward for the human race.

Let's look at how the children of Israel stole the land from the Canaanites in the Old Testament using the pretext that God told them to do it. So many crimes against humanity were done through the centuries because of religion. The Muslim and Christian faiths spread rapidly in the previous centuries because they conquered vast regions of the world and imposed their beliefs on the inhabitants by the edge of the sword and slaughtered those who would not convert.

The crusading armies ravaged christian cities as well. Christianity is a far more complex reality than what you might come to believe. Those who came to Americas were not "just Christians" they were also Europeans, soldiers, servants of their monarchs and imperfect human beings. The truth is, with the technology they developed, they would've reached the New world this way or another. If anything, christianity at least stopped them from completely destroying imdigenous populations, as it was exactly the most religious people of that time that provided safe havens for the indigenous people, coming even in conflict with Spain and Portugal.
It was Bartolomé de las Casas, a jesuit, who is the father of human rights, as he vigorously advocated for Indians before the Spanish crown.
The truth is, though the thought emerged slowly and painfuly, it was exactly on christian countries that the idea of human rights (and social justice) emerged and that is for the reason that "person" is central idea in christianity.
As for Crusades, the idea was never to go and convert muslims, whose occupations indeed plunged Europe in Dark ages as they cut off trade and comunications between east and west, north and south, but to go and create christian zones around holy sites that were being destroyed, and to create safe routes for pilgrims. The idea never was to force Muslims or Jews to convert or to create Christian empire.
As for the Old testament, though here it woould be better to ask someone jewish about it - true, the Bible mentions conquest of the land, but it also puts unorecedented limits to those comquest. The borders are known, in a time where there were already superpowers (Assyria, Babylon, Persia and later, Greeks and Romans) that conquered much, much more and destroyed far more than anything even remotely mentioned in the Bible.
Plus, on the historical side, even those Israelite conquests were probably more a legend to inspire a small and powerless nation constantly threathened by the big players. Lastly, even in those literaly cases, all the conquests are never mentioned as asserting might of Israel itself, but to show how weak can win against strong if they have faith. And, interesting to note, the empires that were killing Israelites are all gone, and Israel and it's faith still is.
@Heather Gaillard How do you explain that Justin Martyr, writing in the second century, said in his explanation of Christian services that they met on "the great and honorable day of the Sun? Christians were meeting on Sundays centuries before the Crusades. Your seventh day "doctrine" really really wants to be persecuted, but in the end, no one on earth CARES what day you get together in church to compare clothing and cars.....which is all church in America is about, anyway.

I however do not blame them, as conquistadors are ignorant soldiers and a product of their times.The soldiers (not the priest and monks who accompanied them) view natives as lesser beings and sought to destroy all native cultures in the area which juxtapose the way Protestants go to an area, convert a few local people, then began to smash statues, deface icons all because they want to replace that areas culture with their own.

Personally, I see the world with love. Everyone is infinitely loved by God since He created us. I know if I were raised and lived in Thailand, I would definitely be a Buddhist instead of a Catholic. I would have little fear to after life, since I wanted to be a nice person while I lived based on a wise man Buddha's advice.

I’m a Catholic too after more than 20 years of searching for the truth. Buddha is a very wise man. What’s wrong with listening to his teachings if I truly believe in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit? Nothing. There are a whole lot of common teachings between Christianity and Buddhism. Using your own belief to alienate our fellow humans is very unchristian. Good deeds are way better than hollow human promises. I would definitely be a Buddhist if I lived in Thailand instead of the USA.
