    "This is my true religion, my simple faith. In this sense, there is no need for temple or church, for mosque or synagogue, no need for complicated philosophy, doctrine, or dogma. Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple. The doctrine is compassion."

      That's against the very definition of religion what you say

    • @helio012

      “As for the spiritual traditions and religions that do exist around the world, two dimensions or aspects can be discerned. One aspect consists of the metaphysical or philosophical views. The other aspect comprises the precepts we need to follow in order to put these views into practice. This means the regular practice of training the mind, day by day, together with the appropriate kind of speech and physical behavior that go along with it. I believe that the major faith traditions generally exhibit these two aspects.
      Sometimes you might wonder: What is the point of having such a diversity of metaphysical views and philosophies? Their aim is to tame this mind of ours and help us develop into good human beings. From the point of view of training the mind, all spiritual traditions are more or less the same and possess this same potential. It is only when we discuss them from the standpoint of the views and philosophies themselves that their differences stand out.”
      ~His Holiness the Dalai Lama
      (MIND IN COMFORT AND EASE - The Vision of Enlightenment in the Great Perfection, Wisdom Publications 2007)

      @@helio012 my point was that if you say it's your faith what really matters and need no temple you go against religion whose etymology is latin, coming from religare which bounds the practitioner of a system of beliefs and rites to a tradition that you'll be negatin or saying you can do without it because the coee is the faith.
      Regarding your quote, though it sounds nice and reasonable, it's not, because the practices are a consequence of the philosophy and the practices are not the same either. Neither the purpose.

      @helio012 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      “Some people actually believe that religion has nothing to do with daily life. But they must have a very narrow view of what religion is. If we think of religion as rituals and prayers that are performed in a temple, them it is true that there might not be much connection with everyday life. But what is the whole reason behind these rituals and prayers? It is to increase our love, compassion, tolerance, and the like. So if we are someone who follows a particular religion, we need to understand that religion’s teachings, take an interest in them, and be able to apply them to our daily lives. I feel this is a crucial principle.”
      ~His Holiness the Dalai Lama

      @alexandros6433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@helio012 you are right that's what some, I'd even say most, people believe. But as showed in the etymology, it's not what it actually is. What is the purposr of rituals, the relation with that what is trascendental.

      @rr You are right. It's never the religions, but people who bring separation. Separation is ego and removing us away from the Divine. The more people practise their repective faiths,whatever that might be, the more they will see that the fundamental message is the same: Love, and then how can there be separation? Many people will still say it's this religion or that that is wrong...those people have got to look at what Love is, and see that the fault lies in the minds of people but not in the hearts. May we all be rightly guided.

    THIS is how I will forever choose to remember Desmond Tutu. I will miss the antics these 2 could get up to whenever they got together, like 2 mischievous little boys. It was beautiful.
    As much as our hearts go out to Desmond Tutu's family & his people we must all remember to also keep His Holiness, The Dalai Lama in our thoughts. For it is the family we choose that is oft times the hardest to lose. These 2 really were best friends & brothers in all the ways that truly matter.
    (I follow neither of these religions, I personally am a Druidess. But these 2 so often reminded me of my grandparents & the lessons a child learns when their Grandfather is Southern Baptist but the love of his life & wife of over 55 years was a Pagan.)

    Desmond Tutu was the Christian equivalent of the Dalai Lama.
    The Dalai Lama did not know much about Christianity until he was about 35 years old and met the Cistercian monk Thomas Merton in 1968. Then he realized that Christianity had deep spiritual depths to match Buddhism.
    When the Dalai Lama met Desmond Tutu many years ago, he recognized a spiritual brother, who had realized the same depths of realization and love as him.
    It's all the same, East and West. Amazing!
