- The second in a series of videos produced by the DILG in partnership with UNDP, under the CMGP Program, Episode 2 discusses the second step in local road construction, in particular, subbase preparation.
Halina't panoorin ang paggawa ng subbase upang matuklasan kung paano ang tamang paglalagay nito mula sa mga materyales na gagamitin, hanggang sa paglalapat, at kung paano ito nakakatulong sa pagkakaroon ng magandang pundasyon ang kalsada.
Kung alam natin ang mga ito, makakatulong tayo sa pagsisiguro na maganda ang kalidad ng mga proyekto sa ating bayan, at ng local road network sa buong bansa. Sama-sama nating alamin na ganito ang tama!

As per DPWH specifications for highways, bridges, and airports, aggregate for subbase shall consist of hard, durable particles or fragments of crushed stone, crushed slag or crushed/natural gravel, and filler of natural or crushed sand or other finely divided mineral matter. The composite materials shall be free from vegetable matter and lumps and balls of clay and shall be of such nature that it can be compacted readily to form a firm, stable subbase.
The Department of Public Works does not specify whether calcified materials can be utilized as a subbase course. Perhaps these materials are appropriate solely to the surface course.

Prior to construction of embankment or "pagtatambak" , all necessary clearing and grubbing in that area shall have been performed. So if included in the scope of work covered in the contract, the removal of existing concrete the contractor must follow the indicated methodology and replaced with new materials as specified in the contract.
Also, for information as per DWPH specification on Subgrade on Existing Pavement and if specified on the contract, the slab shall be broken into pieces with greatest dimension of not more than 500mm and the existing pavement material compacted, as directed by the Engineer.

Base course is a layer of the pavement structure immediately beneath the surface course. It typically consists of high quality aggregate such as crushed gravel, crushed stone, or sand that provides a uniform foundation support and an adequate working platform for construction equipment. Base may consist of unbound materials, such as gravel or crushed stone, or stabilized materials, such as asphalt-, cement- or lime-treated materials.
The subbase course is typically a granular borrow that is placed between the base and subgrade. It can be constructed as either a treated or untreated layer. The subbase course must be better quality than the soil subgrade, the subbase is often omitted if soil subgrades are of high quality.
Subgrade, Subbase and Base course are layers prepared prior to the placement of the design surface courses. There are 3 types of pavement w/c are flexible (asphalt), rigid (concrete), and unpaved.
We provide subbase, base course on flexible pavement prior to asphalt laying but for rigid pavement like Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) subbase layer only is needed prior to concreting of the pavement.

no wonder Philippines roads are full of cracks. they not reinforced by wire or steel mesh for added strength. you forget to mention one of the most important aspect of concrete road is the curing and must be be kept moist for few days for the concrete below to catch up to dry evenly. Haste makes waste.

As per DPWH specifications, at least one group of three in-situ density tests (FDT) shall be carried out for each 500 square meter of prepared subgrade/compacted fill/subbase level/base level.

STOP USING CONCRETE FOR GODS SAKE AND USE ASPHALT! Concrete is NOT GOOD IN RAINEY CLIMATES. Asphalt is and it is cheaper and faster to pour. It is smoother and is recyclable. It is easier to maintain and easier on the driver and the vehicle. These roads out here in the PI are terrible and it takes FOREVER TO POUR CONCRETE BY HAND.
