Macbook Pro 13" 2015 A1502 NO Trackpad & Keyboard Fix repair Guide

  • If you have a 2015 13" MacBook Pro Retina and the Trackpad and Keyboard stop working But the On/Off Key works, the trackpad cable is the most likely cause due to it rubbing on the back cover.
Note: The cable adhesive can be removed and applied to the new cable very easily.
You will need a Torx T5 Screwdriver for the Trackpad Cable shield.
You will also need a P5 Pentalobe screwdriver to get the back cover off.

Wish I watched this back in 2019 when mine stopped working. Paid £50 to have it repaired/replaced (part only costs £6) & a year later the battery went anyway so had to get the whole bottom part of the laptop replaced via Apple anyway for £200. It seems trackpad cables become lose when the battery becomes swollen. Anyhow, lesson learnt & I'm glad going forward I can do a lot of these repairs including Battery myself cause of great people like you on the internet! Keep it up mate!

Apple Store wanted $400 for a new bottom case. Even replacing just the trackpad cable would have been $90 ($80 in labor)! Just fixed my Macbook Pro for $8.
@MAC111 - in the spirit of giving, I will donate $20 to the charity of your choice since you helped save me a lot of money. Happy holidays!

I'm stoked to hear you sorted it, I put this video up because I was seeing this repair so often and Apple techs always quoted worst case scenario top-case replacements or logic boards, they soon will cotton on to the issue but for now you can't beat a $10 fix, please keep your money or just give it to a random stranger who looks like they may need it.
      Cheers JT

Yes, the same case to my MBP 13" 2015, Apple Repair Agent request $650 to change all Keyboard, trackpad, top Aluminum frame, Battery.. This repair center said Apple was not allow to replace individual cable to me.
Just call to complain to Apple, but they said not recognize that is a hardware design problem. Maybe need more MBP user to complain about this issue.
I already bought 5 pcs of this cable from Aliexpress, use 1 pcs, keep remaining 4 pcs for spare.

MAC111 I did this repair but the replacement started doing the same thing because the ribbon cable is slightly too long and bends back a bit. Without replacing it I jiggled it closer back under the and stuck some folded over and over tape of about a couple of millimetres thickness (with paper on it so it doesn't stick to the bottom cover) onto the battery on each side of the strip cable so it won't stick to the backboard as a a buffer, now the bottom doesn't cave in onto the cable basically reinforcing the bottom and hopefully it won''t happen again (fingers crossed).

Where do you get the replacement ribbon? Apple wanted $400 also and said I might need some other repair which would add another $150.

My heart was pumping, but your calm and thorough walkthrough was fantastic and laptop was repaired with a £3 spare part off eBay. For anyone reading this who hasn't opened their MacBook before, on the case, the two screws near the hinge are slightly different to the rest. There are also two clips so when you open you should lever from the hinge side slowly and then they'll easily come away. All in all, excellent tutorial and now I feel like a superhero!

    DUDE Thank you so much!
I have a Mac Book Pro 13' from late 2015 and it fell victim to this same problem.
Woke up one morning and both my trackpad and keyboard were unresponsive. Took my laptop to the Genius Bar at Apple and they said it’d be an entire topcase replacement for $500! I immediately went home to find ways I can DIY the issue and I landed on this video. I got all the parts and followed all of the steps and BOOM. Problem solved! Thanks so much!
One thing I’d like to note, my laptop needed both a pentalobe screw driver and a hexalobe screw driver to complete this process.
I bought only the pentalobe first to open up the laptop and then I saw that the kind of screws are being used to secure the shield of the ribbon cable were hexalobe. If they were pentalobe only pentalobe screws, I would have went ahead and continued the job. Since they were hexalobe screws I needed to buy a hexalobe screwdriver to finish the job.
You really won't know if you need both until you open up your laptop with the pentalobe. I suggest buying both at the same time so you don't have to wait on the shipping for the second screwdriver.
If you want both in a single package, I can vouch for this set www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072KRMPJ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Face this same problem, my keyboard and trackpad stopped working suddenly. Talked to apple customer care who advised to do a reset of nvram and re-install the os. When that didn't solve the issue they advised to go to the local authorised service center, the guys there didn't have a clue and just said that I need to submit the laptop and they don't repair it but always replace it. And it would incur significant charges! In the meantime I just came across this video and decided to take a risk, ordered the ribbon on amazon. Got it today and replaced the ribbon, guess what - It worked and I am typing from my macbook! Great job man, certainly the right solution for this problem.

At first I thought it occured due to a software update, but I could cut it down to a hardware problem. I just removed the cable and installed the same one again. And it worked! This is why I am pretty sure that not the cable by itself was the problem. Probably the connection looses with time.

Thanks so much for this. My MBP developed a similar issue, for reference:
    -Power button still worked.
-Trackpad haptics clicked as usual, but induced no response on screen, neither did movement/gestures induce response.
-Keyboard backlight off (not sure if I'd just set it quite low before keyboard stopped working though).
    -Keyboard unresponsive.
I changed the ribbon cable as per this video, worked like a charm. One point for consideration is that in the end I needed to use a slightly smaller Torx screwdriver- video info says Torx T5; the T5 driver I have turned out to be too big. This might be an issue with my screwdriver; just a cheap job from Amazon.

Just done this, typing with the keyboard again. thankyou! you should post a patreon here.
First time I have opened up the laptop, went very smoothly although the cable isa bit too long, I bought it of amazon. Given that the previous cable must have degraded with pressure on the case (it stopped working after some travelling), I suspect this will happen again with the kinks in the cable.
For note: before hand I thought it was a software/cached memory issue since
    - power button still worked
    - I could reset the SCM using the keyboard
    - I could wake the laptop using the spacebar
    - Diagnostics found nothing wrong.

Thanks for the video. My early 2015 13.3" MBP developed this issue. Since it is still under AppleCare Protection, I called tech support. Every conceivable procedure was done without improvement. Conclusion: "hardware problem." The machine was sent to depot and they replaced the trackpad cable at no charge. However, the listed bill was $100 for labor and $180 for Flat Rate 1 Repair Charge. If this happens again, after warranty, I will refer back to you excellent video and do the repair myself.

I noticed though, that the model number for this cable in my retina early 2015 MBP was not exactly the same as the one i bought, but this worked anyway. Might be the fact that my replacement cable already had adhesive on it or something. I will update if there is something wrong, but up to this point, everything works as it should. Thanks for the guide! I littel bit of a heads up tho, you mentioned the T5 screwdriver. However the T5 was too big for my Macbook Pro 13" 2015. I had to use the T4 instead. Not a big deal, but if you're buying the tools online, it's probably good too know!

Thanks for this video, I just managed to do the repair. It was very easy, the only weird thing was that the cable was a bit too long...

I actually tried removing and reseating the original one and it appears to have fixed the issue! Maybe the disconnection of the battery fixed the issue! Thanks for the guide!

If you get some pieces of tape and fold them over a few times so it is about 1.5 mm thick or so and put it on the batteries either side of the 'strip cable', then put some paper on it to stop it sticking to the cover it will also help because the metal caves in and crushes the strip, this will reinforce the cover and stop it from compressing down onto the trackpad/keyboard ribbon cable which is why this has needed to be replaced in the first place. Otherwise you will find that the new strip ribbon cable will have the same thing happen to it, I've just done this myself after replacing it and so far so good.

@ryan Held up fine, I should have done it to this new one I've got, I damaged my old Retina MacBook from spilling detergent through it accidentally...tragedy...have to do the same transplant operation on the replacement Mac now. Wish me luck...

2:01 - What do you use to actually bend the cable to the proper [bend] radius? I have been unsuccessful at doing this without compromising the new cable. Do you use a jig? What is the bend radius for this cable?

Thank you very much I just fixed my macbook. However the only difference for me was the middle shield, it required a p6 screwdriver, but everything else was the same. I think it's because I have an English/Arabic keyboard.
