Very interesting and a neat test setup for pressure sensors. It takes me back to chasing low oil pressure on a Rover V8 (that was wear everywhere including the pump😄).

This takes me back, some of the pushrod European Ford engines used to have very low oil pressure on an idle, the normal oil pressure switch only need a few PSI to put the light out yet still it was considered normal with some variants if the oil light came on while idling. There were alternative oil pressure switches made with an even higher threshold, typically for competition cars that were never idled. With the Lotus twin cam I think the oil pressure was even worse, same pump, similar bottom end and two additional cams needing lubrication. (they kept the one in the block to drive the oil pump, fuel pump and distributor). As for the shims on the relief valve, even in the UK weather it was scary to get near on 100psi on a cold idle, and creeping down the road in fear of bursting the filter. ridiculous oil pressure also puts massive strain on the oil pump drive.

I got a new battery then alternator for my td5 showing low voltage to discover it was my voltmeter playing up reading low! Couldnt get the £220 battery back to car shop quick enough!!!

I don't mind a Rowentrees Fruit Pascal now and again ;-D Interesting to see the difference between new sensors though. Hope you got the alternator fixed.

Parts were not available locally so special order - by the time I order and get rebuilt it was going to get too expensive, so ordered a new one from the US for $125 - will be here in 2 weeks

Must pay more attention to the hot oil pressure on my gauge on the 200di in my S3.....10psi idle would worry me.
    Interesting vid.

My td5 charged at 15.5v, once, and it was the wire going from the alternator to the ignition sorce was broken.
That seems to of sort it out back to 14v now.

What would you expect the oil pressure to be on a 300tdi hot and cold with the engine in good condition Mike. I love these video's they give you something else to worry about on a long trip ( just kidding )

      Normal operating temperatures and speeds:
      1.7-3.8 bars (25.0-55.0 psi)
Idle speed pressure can be lower and not always detrimental - think about it - there is no stress on the motor and the engine is only doing about 750 rpm - it's when you are driving and the oil pressure light comes on at speed!
But it should not come on at idle as they are set for 6-9 psi

Is 10 psi not a little low for idle ? Going from 60 psi cold to 10 psi warm seems a big range, or is it just me
Keep up the good work Mike really really enjoy watching your videos, very informative

60psi was the opening of the relief valve, so cold thick 15w40 will open the valve

Very timely information. I’ve just had to change out a faulty switch on a 19J that I’ve rebuilt. I had a bit of a panic when the light came on when it was at hot idle but a test gauge told me it had 20psi. Can you explain the oil circuit through the cooler and if the pressure would be affected buy the oil thermostat in the filter housing opening and closing please? Keep up the good work!

It would be a interested question when the pressure Valve is opening by the oilpump ?
I'm sure you will built a test stand with the original oilpumphousing and a mechanism to show this Also it would be very special to put worn out oilpumps insude to see the difference.
I believe there is most off pressure failings not the oilpump rather engine problem s. It would be very interesting. Good Video ! I love it.

Maximun on a car batteries is 14.1 V and usually 13.8 V if it's over there is a serious flaw in the alternator regulator .

Yeap - 17v is too much - stripped it down and went for parts - no longer available locally, and the price of a regulator/rectifier and brush pack was almost half the price of a new alternator - no-brainer

It is interesting on how much activation varies from sender to sender.

Older fords used smart charge for the initial charge after startup up to 18v but had to use silver calcium batteries

It would be an idea to have an oil pressure switch with a propotional Integral messuring.
That means you have depence of RPM a curve for the pressure.

Maybe it is possible to make a small programm on Arduino ?
