I am converting a step van into a mini home. I am installing one of these as a back up heater next to my mini wood stove. This was good help seeing this.
My grandparents bought one of these back in the early 80s, the first ones had high and low but no thermostat. It was still better than the old flue heaters.
Thank for the vid. Have an old glo warm heater in my garage, pervious owner had it mounted to drywall and the back vent was blocked. I didn’t think that was right and now I understand I need some spacers. Thanks!!
Great video. I was really excited about this unit until I read their information on Amazon that said the units are not for sale in California or Canada. We had the old unvented Dearborn heaters when I was a kid (1950s), but yes, some people did die back in those day of carbon monoxide poisoning. Seems like a great idea for a garage or shop anyway, but that's just another limitation here in Cali.
Apparently the new ones (you may already know this) must all be equiped with oxygen depletion sensors that shut the unit off when oxygen level in the room drops too low.
Well, this is a start! I don't have natural gas in my home and so I have to find a video with propane. But I did learn very much. Thank you kindly. I picked up my unit today and the connections. I would have liked to see how you would treat a fan?
Mix some Dawn blue dishing washing liquid in a spray bottle with water...about a 5 part water to 1 part soap mix and spray it on the connections. If there is a leak it Will Bubble. Happy Trails
These are safe to run but if you have any un-insulated exterior walls (you shouldn't) they will collect condensation. I ran one of these unattended in a mobile home last year and it was perfect...until the jets clogged and it shut off. Keep the jets super clean.
Did you need an additional regulator to run this unit? I'll be taping into the piping for our water heater that is fed from a 500 gallon lp tank that feeds my house and the instructions say a regulator is needed. Wasn't sure if the regulator on my tank choked it down enough.
Thank you for this video. I thought I had something wrong or possibly a dud heater. After you said it will take a long time, I went back and tried again and it fired right up.... after a long wait.
Thank you for this video! You’ve probably heard this already but I would imagine that they recommend just two of the holes because judging by the spacing if you hit a stud with one of them it is very unlikely that the other one beside it will hit a stud as well, unless each screw is just barely grabbing on either side of the typical width of a “2“ by “4”. Also, if you have 24 inch centers between the studs in the wall that you are securing it to, it looks like you will most certainly have at least one side without a stud and needing an anchor. More than one drywall anchor that close together would not be recommended on one side but if both sides are in drywall only then drywall anchors on the two outside holes, furthest apart will give you the best holding strength.
@@store4books not to mention the carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, soot, and unburned hydrocarbons that are thrown back into the area, why bother? Why have a window, vent open on a cold day? Nobody turns on the furnace in a house or cabin and opens the window.
Nothing is more comforting on a snowy night than to be close to a heater like that and watch the blue flame roll up and the blower comes on while you're butt deep in your recliner pulling on a hot cup of coffee !!!
FYI, White Teflon is for water. NG pipe joints use yellow Teflon. Years ago Street Ells were not acceptable because of metal thickness on the male end due to the threads.
That is a normal sched 40 pipe thread on a street 90. it is no different than a piece of sched 40 steel T&C pipe. Perhaps that was some obscure local code from the inspector. Also, you can use white teflon on gas. There's no restriction on that. In fact many years ago the yellow was not even available. There's nothing wrong with the white teflon tape, but what is even better is using 4 or 6 wraps of teflon and pipe dope on top of that. Some appliance manufacturers may still have a prohibition on using any teflon on their appliances.
Sweet....so how do we get the gas lines to the wall we're we want the heater to be?... I have a gas stove and gas furnace but have no gas connections hanging out of my wall like this.....
I just bought a 20,000 BTU that will be standing on the floor and hooked to my household liquid propane. I’ve been watching several videos trying to get information as to whether I need a pressure regulator/controller or not. The manual parts schematic shows that there is a controller inside the unit, but it does not state it’s a pressure controller. I don’t know if I need one or not. ???
@@Robinson-Homestead Since I cannot post an image here, I’ll have to solve my dilemma locally. I have what looks like a regulator on the side of the house… going to the large household propane tank. All my appliances are LP.
Everyone should plan ahead if you are doing any renovations, to install some scrap 2x4's before drywalling. Mounting into real wood is by far best. I have installed plenty of these over the years and prefer to have my shut-off valve a little further away from the unit.
Depending on the weight of what you are hanging on hollow drywall (no stud), two screws with anchors may weaken drywall or interfere with each other in close proximity. Since you have a stud on the opposite side, the bracket will be stable enough to hang your heater.
The bracket is specifically designed to connect to 16-on-center studs. So if your studs are farther apart than that, the anchors would be necessary, of course. Nice that they are included in the kit.

I am in Tennessee and i am told by local Professional Gas installer that Copper tubing is Fine as long as you do Flare fittings. No Compression fittings!
So with this type of ventless natural gas unit and you're done warming the area for the day. Do you turn off both the pilot and gas knob? Then the next day turn on the gas knob and go through the lighting process again?
Did you ever check to see if you needed a separate gas regulator on that line to install that make of vent free heater ? Mr. Heater vent free heaters are suppose to have a separate regulator installed on either a gas or propane model, I would assume that would be the case for all brands of vent free appliances such as this.

If you have to use an anchor of course you want all 4. I would skeptical hanging a gas heater on 4 anchors. hi kevin, just want to know why my dyna glo heater shuts off after 3 or 4 minutes im running on natural gas. thermal coupler seems to be ok i tried cleaning with compressed air. would appreciate some input. thx
Hey there @robinsonhomestead! First off great video! However, I am looking to do the same and am pretty new to NG. Did you have to have a regulator hooked up to this somewhere? Or do you just hook it directly up to your home gas line?
What do you think of it so far? I've been looking into one to not only use but act as a backup for both or outage as well as if the furnace goes down while I'm away
Wow those are very nice I really could use this during the ice storm unfortunately I use a BTU heater system was not anything like that that used a lot of propane fast how long is the propane last in this thing
Ok good, but I'd point out that when you 'bubble test' for leaks, the gas valve to the heater should be turned 'on' and gas should be flowing into the heater (pilot lit). This video shows the leak test being run *before* this was done. After valve is opened, It is pointed out that one must wait for some time until the new piping fills with gas before pilot will light. So, *after* gas is definitely flowing, through the piping, is when 'leak test' should be carried out.
That batteries only for lighting the pilot lite. How often will you need it? Once a year maybe twice. It looks easy to change and batteries are cheap. I've been using one for a Icehouse with LP for some two years and have yet to replace mine. But I thinking of putting one in my basement to turn it into living space.
I noticed everyone mounts them so high when they can actually sit on the floor with feet attached and considering heat rises you would think they'd be lower to the floor
