Maru's strength as a Terran was always his ability to go super late game vs the other races when ever other Terrans can't. Unfortunately it doesn't work vs Serral and it does seem like he needs to explore more aggressive playstyles similar to Clem and Oliveira that have shown more success.
Half agree, Serral is by far the best zerg and player in the game, and Maru's technique of absorbing blows is pushed to the limit and often goes past the limit by him. However, I think in the last two games you can see Maru has the potential to beat Serral in the late game. The one where Maru won was a classic case of continual bad engagements despite higher resources on the zerg side, which is Maru's zerg bread and butter. The final one, Maru really threw that game hard in taking a terrible engagement on creep, had he just sat back and defended his, and put more pressure on Serral's, outer bases, I think it likely could have looked a lot closer to the previous game.
It really not that easy. Oliveira did not beat Serral, he surprise Serral with some timing attacks but Serral solve it by the 5th game buy skipping some drones and build more units. Clem beat Serral buy overloading Serral with superior multi-tasking, which probaby only Clem can do, Maru is too old for that. The key is to surprise Serral and play better than Serral. Whatever strategy you are using, if Serral scout what you are trying to do, you are going to lose, that's its.
@teddanville6996 the reason Clem can beat Serral this tournament is because Serral is not in his best condition. rumor has that Serral got a small fever and haven't recovered yet.
Maru needs to play this style nowadays for health reasons he has had shoulder and wrist issues for ages
@@Adam-uz3hj I dont know if i agree with your last sentence. I think the reason why Maru commited there so hard was that he was feeling that he was losing and needed to get something done. And i think he would have been right in that assesment. Serral was playing *a lot* more efficient than in the game before (honestly i havent seen Serral play so inefficient in quite a while) and he did mine quite a bit of Marus bases. So yes, Maru could have dragged the game out for another 15 or so minutes, if he had avoided any mayor fights and bunkered down, but i think Serral would have grinded him down eventually.
Starcraft is such a sick game - I love it so much. These guys are insane to watch, the level at which they play is so unbelievably high.

Serral is looking much more healthy. I think the military has been feeding him well.
For sure you'll want to eat much more when you become very active physically. It requires a lot of energy to crawl and run in the forest with your rifle and all the gear on you. Not to mention the grueling marching we do in the army. It's not uncommon to go for a 10 hour march where you travel 15km/h, so on a 10 hour march you would travel 150 kilometers just by walking with all the guys. But for sure being physically active also helps with your brain and thinking to become sharper. So I think even if Serral's gameplay has looked "not perfect" like we normally see from him, I think in long term this experience will be good for him. It also helps build character when you can overcome these tough moments where your body feels like giving up, but you still keep pushing forward.
Basic training will leave you healthier than you've ever been and more exhausted than you've ever been.
@@75ncv4hu9tg7 15 km/h is more like running than marching. And 15 km/h for 10h straight with a gear? Are you sure you didn't mix up the numbers? Average walking speed is 5 km/h. Amateur marathon runners do 42 km in about 4 hours which make it 10,5 km/h (and we talk about people who train to do it). I am not sure that even top shape marathon professional runners would be able to go on even without any gear for 10h at a speed of 15 km/h.
Shout out to the observer repeatedly trying to point out how well Serral was mining from edge bases in game 4. I saw that! Announcers didn't catch it. Serral extracted the entire purple gas! Worth mentioning. PiG wouldn't have missed it ;)

It was an incredible game, In the last match, Maru had one very unsuccessful battle, after which his limit dropped a lot... just one battle :(
100 supplies lost for him in that battle. It's insane how quickly the game can turn on its head.
I would like to see comentators from time to time, as well as players shaking hands at the end. Finally cutting the video when the comentator didn't end doesn't seem so professional in such an event.

maru's playstyle just doesnt go against serral's that well. to disrupt serral you really need to do damage in the early game and keep him uncomfortable. if you let serral alone, next thing you know he's maxed out with 3k in the bank. as the casters pointed out, maru's play is "outdated" and he needs to adapt especially when playing serral
not only that, zerg needs to get some sort of a nerf on the queens is really dificult to do anything early on to a zerg... thats been like this for way too long.

your comment would have make more sense if Clem didn't just 5-0 serral, game 4 forcing Serral to GG with 7k mineral in the bank. Clem has shown that it's relatively not difficult to defense a Zerg late game as long as you don't move your Ghosts to the front line. Tank and Libs are very efficient and can be replace. Clem also did not take his 6th and 7th base for a very long time because he know Serral need to take those bases to gain a resource advantage in the case of mining out the map. Clem would then only need to continuously send small armies to snipe those bases and force Serral to rebuild, gaining lots of resource advantage.

Why am I not surprised at all at the result?
I suspect that Maru has a psychological barrier in his mind when going up against Serral given the years of getting beat up by Serral. It feels like Maru isn't all there when he's up against Serral.

Im proud of Maru. Against a great player like Serral, it’s important to take things 1 game at a time. At least it’s not a sweep this time. Not everybody can be like Clem.
Serral is GOAT!
There are lots of instantaneously voices translators between languages nowadays, and with the same exercised voice and timbre they are even better, exact and precise. It may be the best model to save money and improve the experience of watching e-Sports in the future. R.T.E. is missing to feed some local commentaries too.
5:23 "that overseer, that's why he went for the lair.." not really Artosis. there are more reasons. Zombie G. said it: Serral needed creep in front of marus base for queen transfuses which only works on creep. but no creep in front of Maru's base without a lair. Serral also wanted that creep highway on the way to Maru's base so he doesn't have to wait for roach speed. the lair is essential for that push, also because of cloak banshees. it is always easy to say, Zerg is op just because Serral wins. But Serral doesn't make any mistakes. Every mistake is huge at this level of gameplay. there are no little mistakes.
How Maru could become unstoppable in TvZ:
He just needs to combine the playstyle's of his own, and Clem's.
Clem's playstyle is super in your face, but it fails against Zerg mid-game if the first infestor's catch a bunch of marines, or a lurker nydus appears in his main base.
Maru's playstyle is super turtley, and if you give him an advantage, he'll cement his 5th+ base, and simply be more efficient than you.
Combine them both and you get something even Serral would lose to maybe half the time.
Gods of Starcraft
One thing I can see Serral work on is attacking from multiple angles. Reynor is probably the best at that

You can't really play turtle terran against serral. Turtle terran means zerg will just take the whole map and swarm you into oblivion.

Maru was the best Ghost user, not necessarily the best Terran.
Ghosts used to be unstoppable, their snipes did more damage, could not get interrupted, and could not have their lock-ons be broken by distance. Maru used to take advantage of that by rushing to Ghosts, and abusing these once over-powered units. He did this for the better part of a decade until they were heavily nerfed the last couple years.
Now with all the nerfs to ghosts, what made Maru an unstoppable force in the late-game is gone, and he needs to reinvent himself.
Nerf Terran more. Maru was able to eek out a win in one game. Simply unacceptable.
Clem 3-0 Serral. It’s just that Maru shuts down vs Serral. There’s no balance issue here.
Well after playing with the simple units (fast lings, banelings, roaches, and hydralisks) - lets take out the super fast, underground long range lurkers and with a tunnel to the back of your main base while at 12,000 minerals lol 😆🤪 ZergCraft.

Serral is better than Maru but Maru is more entertaining to watch as a spectator IMO.
You need to show a lot of early aggression and do not slow the pace of your offense to beat Serral. Clem has shown how it should be done

Can someone please explain to me when this tourney ends? Online says the final day is Sunday but I keep seeing videos from Day 3. Which would be Saturday... Which is tomorrow. Even in Europe it's WAAAAAAY too early for a tournament.

Knockout is Saturday finals on Sunday. Time zone though. So if your in North America it's more like early morning Saturday early morning Sunday. This is day 3. It started Wednesday.
