    I have to limit my caffeine intake as too much makes me feel ill, so if we could get decaf as high quality and diverse as the specialty single origin coffee I've been sampling lately then I'd be all for it! As you mentioned though, it'd be hard in a commercial setting to have it remain fresh. It's just not popular enough where I'm working at the moment, to the point where we don't offer it at all. If it could gain a better reputation over the next few years I think we'll be seeing a lot more specialty coffee shops making it available - and acceptable rather than an inconvenience to the barista.

    • @brewbudsclub
      @brewbudsclub  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I agree with you. I'm excited by this decaf option - but I'm also really excited to watch it develop even further.
      Regarding freshness - a lot of specialty cafes have a single dose grinder for single origins these days (for example EK43). This means that they can offer multiple coffees out of one grinder, and it's just a matter of adjusting the EK for each coffee you're making. Once you understand the coffees you're using, you can typically just make the adjustment before you throw the particular single in, and know that what you grind will extract well. In this case, the decaf is just another coffee, and you can dial it in just like any other single :)

    I drink a lot of decaf these days because I love lattes and cappuccinos but am not always in the mood for very mild anxiety. :D I almost feel a bit guilty when I order it, but this did a good job of clarifying what it's potentially like across the counter when we order it. So thank you!

      It's anxiolytic so it can help with sleep. I take it sometimes for anxiety. It produces GABA and lowers glutamate so very appropriate for sleep. Plus it seems like it's an isomer of caffeine so it should be quite easy to engineer coffee to make it.
      You can buy 100g bags of the powder for about £10. I mix it with tea since it's already present in it in small amounts.

    I'm in North America right now and lately have become a titch bit obsessed with decaf - I have Kicking Horse out of Golden, BC as my current grind and a few Bridgeheads from Mechanicsville in Ontario waiting for a turn; love to hear what you think of these if you have tried them!!! Barista was one of my first jobs and decaf was a big time rare buy which made that customer a special unicorn and me happy and tittilated because YES all that extra decaf prep was worth it hahahahaha.
    Buzzed to have found this channel while looking for more info on decaf life and would love to hear of any leads on a great Canadian decaf (or a company that delivers to Canada for a decent price lol) to help stay on my game. TIA.💗☕⭐

      Sorry for the late reply, thanks so much for your unique perspective! Unfortunately I haven't tried a lot of roasters outside of Australian coffee suppliers, but I know that Decaf is a much more popular beverage in some other countries, which makes it make sense that more R+D has been put into acquiring nicer decaf coffees. It's great though in the last couple of years that a quality decaf offering has started arriving into Australia.

    “More like coffee was like a few years ago”
    Which essentially means like over strong burned stuff
    I’ve spent a while trying to locate decent and importantly varied decaf. It isn’t because I don’t want caffeine, just because I’d like to choose how much a bit.
    I grind beans, I brew etc but cannot be said to be obsessive about any of it … I figured out what I like, how to get the best of it and that’s it really.
    Then I got to decaf trying out … it all just seems over burned to me or a nothing drink at the limited availability other end.
    Compare that to what is available caffeinated just now and there is a massive gap int he market

    Here's the thing, we have a really good tasting decaffeinated coffee, but I only have one machine. Our decaf blend is a lot finer that our normal blend, so when someone asks for a decaf drink, we have to spoon it into the group head and then struggle watching it as it slowly pours through the group head, just takes up too much time

    • @cscollen
      @cscollen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ben Vosper I run a coffee van and do a handful of decafs a day (including my wife) I now grind up 10 shots of beans in the morning and store them individually in small décor 75ml containers(they are round and fit right over the basket), I find that the coffee is much fresher and is ground the same as my regular coffee so extracts pretty much the same! The flavour has improved in leaps and bounds too!

    • @brewbudsclub
      @brewbudsclub  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah - I think this is one of the main struggles of quality decaf - the cost/benefit of having a second grinder so you can dial the coffee in properly. In your situation, you could try dosing less coffee in order to have a faster extraction.
      - Chris. Great advice - if you do have to pregrind, making up set doses that are ready to go and will extract well is a clever way around it!

    I don't know what stats are like elsewhere, but we do an average of 7-8kg of specialty per day, and around 200g decaf. I would say that low sales combined with its necessity contribute to Barista decaf hate.

    • @brewbudsclub
      @brewbudsclub  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I agree - but the more interesting point - are sales of decaf low because in general, decaf is of lower quality? Do you think potentially if the stigma around decaf (which exists for customer too) was gone, more people would opt for an after decaf coffee?
      I was chatting to a friend from the states recently, and he said there they do heaps of decaf, and there are a number of quality decafs to choose from! I feel like it should be just like our normal coffee - always trying to improve quality, and tell the story while we do in order to educate customers!

    If there was a selection of high quality specialty decaf coffee near to the selection of regular specialty coffee, I would become a decaf drinker. I don't care about the caffeine, I care about the flavors and the brewing process. Unfortunately, decaf always has that off flavor for me. It tastes like molasses or something and I hate it. I can pick out a decaf coffee in a blind tasting just by the smell.
    As a barista, my issue with decaf besides the flavor is that no one cares to dial in the decaf grinder or rotate the beans. So my struggle is,, do I spend the few minutes switching out the hopper, pulling shots and dialing in for the 5 people who want decaf, or do I dedicate my attention to the hundreds of people who come in looking for an amazing espresso?

    • @brewbudsclub
      @brewbudsclub  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a tricky call isn't it - and I think this is probably one of the major problems with the flavour of decaf.
      HOWEVER, as you were saying - if you had a decaf of comparable quality, more people would be interested in drinking it. I think there's a huge assumption (and in a lot of cases I'd say fair) with the general public that decaf coffee tastes bad, so they'd rather go without than have decaf. If everyone improved their quality control on decaf, and it in general became a high quality product, I think more people would drink it, and as a result you wouldn't have the freshness issues, because instead of it being 1-5% of your orders, it might perhaps become 10-20% of your orders, and then there wouldn't be an issue with freshness.
