I’ve seen real knife fights in and outside of bars, and they’re pretty much like this-short, up close, and deadly! Well shot fight scene!
For such an amiable person in real life Borgnine really could play the bad guy role so well.
He was a genius imo.
That's exactly what I thought, considering his other roles. What an actor, classic
Yes just watched 97 doc about him going on road trip with son on his converted bus sunbumseemed a really nice, guy with zest for life
One of the best movies ever ❤
Two other movies in which Ernest Borgnine was in famous fight scenes:
a. 'Bad Day at Black Rock'
b. 'Johnny Guitar'
Also the Wild Bunch, he was amazing.
How about Emperor of the North!
I wish they'd left in Fatso's last line. He stumbles out, sees his wound, and says "You killed me." It adds some pathos to his demise.
In the book, his actual last line was" why would you want to do something like that for? ";it haunted the other man
@@andrewcarson8904 I was gonna quote that but you beat me to it.
He slowly goes down, with Prewitt slowly turning the blade, finally hits the pavement, and says "you killed me. Why'd you want to kill me?"
"The thin red line" and "Whistle" are good novels too
@@John-l8m Whistle was good but wasn't finished. For a decent book by James Jones, try "The Pistol"
0:43 supposed to be in Hawaii but looks like it's cold.😊
I guess they never were involved in a war and fought the wrong people. They were just dead. Poor ernie poor cliff
I noticed that too! Actually it was kinda distracting and took a bit away from the realism of the scene.
This is pure cinema gold. Great acting
As a follow up...beleive it or not, "fatso" did survive that knife in the stomach and saw the error of his ways for beating old blue eyes to death, so he changed his name to McHale and was a totally jolly, chill guy for the rest of the war
Hmm... not so sure I should believe that. I mean how does a guy go from the army to the navy?
Excellent telling and then became a helicopter pilot
“The army’s going to get you sooner or later Fatso. But before they do, I want a piece of you myself.” I can’t. TOO gangsta. Prewitt was a ride or die dude. His downfall was that he had TOO much loyalty and TOO much integrity.
Ernest Borgnine is my favorite actor. I still watch McHales Navy every night.
From Marty onwards, he was so good. In my top 5.
So beautifully shot. It's horrible, frightening, grim. And after it's done, Prewitt feels no triumph. He is empty.
Zinneman was a genius.
Exactly!
Zinneman also directed "A Man for All Seasons", one of my grandfather's favorite movies.
@@contractmed1 one of best films ever made 💎
Very impactful, and great scene.
Such great representation and storytelling.
Love the contrast in this scene. The two are struggling to the death and there is Hawaiian music playing and couples wandering past enjoying every day life just beyond the alley. The shot composition is amazing during the part of this sequence when Clift trips Borgnine. Poor Ernie also took a memorable beatdown from Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock! His movie credits are insane.
He was one evil SOB in Black Rock. That scene where he broke the screen door wasn't planned but was left in, great stuff!
He got hit so hard in "Bad Day at Black Rock" that he went out the front door. Interesting enough, he did the same thing in "Vera Cruz". I think it was an inside movie joke.
He wasn’t such a good guy in Hannie Caulder.
He wasn’t such a good guy in Hannie Caulder.
George Reeves (Superman) behind Borgnine
One of the best scenes in movie history just wonderful acting and so real. What a movie and what a cast Ernie Borgnine what an underrated actor he was and Monty Cliff a great actor even with all his inner demons Sinatra,Reed,Kerr and don't forget the straw that made this movie stir Burt lancaster what more can you say about him. A Classic movie!
Clift's demons were surely compounded by the 1958 car-crash that took away his looks and left him gaunt, almost 'frozen faced' and taking drugs until he expired in 1966, aged 45.
I dont like the way you play the piano!
Those men worked hard choreographing that fight.
Today's cinematographers pay heed............1.52 to 2.02....out of sight, static camera; who comes out alive?...and that holds the audience in suspense...a class a class act from Zinnemann!
In mainstream contemporary film, cinematography is largely appalling. Too many unnecessary close-ups and too much camera movements.
great movie, Borgnine was perfect for this role.
Best part of the movie because every town has a guy like Lard-O. There was a guy in our town like that. Beat up people for the hell of it. He died young too but it was by shotgun.
Love, love, love FHTE. I always consider it a treat when I have the time to sit and watch the movie without interruption.
1:43 - I like Prewitt's Capoeira move there. A kick while spinning around on one hand.
Yep. Definitely a combat move, one trained in it.
I learned that move at Merchant Marine Academy. I used it on a fatso once too. Worked perfectly he was down in 1 second.
The more I watch this scene and the longer I miss Ernest Borgnine; the more I actually root for the evil Fatso.
So many stars in this
This knife fight was filmed on the back lot at Columbia Pictures Studio , correct? I await your answer.
Matthew I'm pretty sure it was. My grandfather on my mom's side was the Prop Master and well my Pop's got the Knife from Monty and a 60 yr career from this picture. They sure had some amazing talent in this film.
According to Ernest Borgnine's autobiography it was filmed at the Columbia Ranch in San Fernando Valley. It took from 4 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon until 5 the next morning.
Years ago, my parents had a Tommy Bahama catalog and asked if I wanted a shirt from it. My brother was into them but I'm not. I said, "Who do I look like, Fatso Judson? " Mom got confused but the old man got it.
The film noir knife fight. Fatso also got his butt kicked in Bad Day At Black Rock.
This is what a great director can do.
Doesn't sound like much but I love the music playing. A sharp contrast to the fight.
I concur. Had Spielberg or a director of his ilk done this scene it would probably have been underscored by a bombastic John Williams score beating the audience over the head with what their supposed to be feeling and how they should be reacting.
Side note: Apparently when Borgnine is dying he says to Monty "You killed me. Why would you do that?". That's according to Ernest. But Zinnerman felt that might bring sympathy to the Fatso character so he cut it. Upon looking at the clip you can see the cut. Probably Zimmerman made the right call, the Fatso character didn't have any redeeming qualities, so no need to leave that line in.
Clift. “First of the new breed”.
Borgnine could be a lovable teddy bear - or a terrifying bully. In either case, he makes a memorable impression.
Extremely impressive performances! I'd have to say that I liked the sergeant, even though he was a little rough around the edges, but the other guys actually disrespected him too much.
Fatty?🙄
Jman
@@robertmunoz7543, these guys were so busy fighting one another that they forget to think about the Japanese fellows.
@@valuecalc that's entertainment like the jam song says?😜

My Mom never watched anything with Ernest Borgnine in it after she saw him kill Frank Sinatra in this movie
I’m here because Don Draper just came back from Hawaii
Do not remember Ernest Borgnine ever winning a fight
What's the name of the Hawaiian music during the knife scene?
What a great villain Borgnine was
Quiero ver mexicanas
Pruett and Maggio both oversensitive types
Real oddballs!
Stockade leader. OMG.
Best actors around!
B
Fatso was just a NCO doing a difficult job .
