@mojoplays did you forget about Rondo of Blood? It should have made the list over one of the others like Dawn of Sorrow. While yes DOS is a fantastic game, it's more of the same as Aria of Sorrow. Rondo has multiple characters in Richter and Maria, branching paths, hidden paths and great boss encounters. Maybe its because the game was originally just for TurboGrafx 16 and not as many people got to play it?

All Konami needs to do is a Symphony style game in with the Netflix series art and it would be legendary. They can just sub it out to M2. Maybe now that there are no more collections to do, they will do something? We can pray, to Dracula.
Lament of Innocence was one 3D Castlevania game that was good before Lords of Shadows. It shows how the war between Dracula and the Belmont family first started.

@@kg21bestpf94Harmony of Dissonance is the worst Castlevania game ever made and the only one I have ever sold. Even amongst the overrated Iga-vanias it sucks with beyond boring level design and combat.
Rondo yes should be top 5, lament I always found boring despite beating it twice, a poormans version of dmc if you ask me and Harmony is by far the weakest of the 6 handheld metroidvania games and even though the composition of the soundtrack is good the quality of it is straight terrible
While it didn't get a mention, I think Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest gets a bad rep. Konami or someone should remake Simon's Quest since the exploration was really compelling but the clues were nonsense. Anyone else want to see Simon's Quest get remade to modern consoles or is it just me?
Would be pretty sick actually if they could incorporate modern ways to help guide players in game instead of relying on external guides and maybe tone down difficulty a little
It's weird that it gets such a bad wrap for the vagueness of the clues too, considering how obscure point and click adventure games were in that era. Some of those games were made obtuse to pad runtime. If you play any of them today it's a wonder how anybody got through them without guides. I don't know why Simon's Quest is the one that gets knocked for it
I haven’t played it but Infernax is an indie game embodying that idea. Often when the original publishers don’t make the game the fans want someone else will do it for them!

I'm a seasonal kind of guy these days, so I've made it an annual tradition to play the Castlevania games every October. It's just so fitting for that time of year. My favorites in no order are Super Castlevania IV, Belmont's Revenge, Bloodlines, and Symphony of the Night (though I still have yet to beat it lol).
They put Dawn of Sorrow on here above portrait of ruin. The fact Lords of Shadow is on this list is all you need to know this list is a joke full of hot takes to piss people off.

@@dexterjoshi yeah that was koo but in Curse you had so much more...the main one was you had different weapons not just one weapon...the camera was better, the movement, graphics...plus all the additions like weapon crafting, innocent devils, innocent devils being able to evolve, your weapon type dropping different crystals, the steal system, the game had a ton of variety but not in a lazy way (maybe besides the castle layout but it was actually still worse in lament) I thought everything was done well.
Yeah they should make one and the series has alot of history could probably come up with a great story and it would be cool to have diffrent paths were one leads to a mini open world were another is more linear but were you as a beginer can choose a bigger open world but has to eventually get better and challange the linear path or you can choose the linear path but get a more relaxing experience once you reach the open world
I know that Symphony of the Night makes it to number one but there are other Castlevania titles worth playing. Those of the GameBoy Advance era, the Nintendo DS era, the Harmony of Despair and the mobile game Apple exclusive Grimoire of Souls(which is sadly took that wrong decision to obscurity).
Interesting list..circle of the moon over ecclesia.Imo the peak of castlevania will always be the "metroidvania" style ones.Symphony,aria and the ds ones are S tier.Circle and harmony are A tier.The rest come after.Legendary series.🦹
I truly believe Lord of shadows deserves more love. For me, it had a great twist in the end albeit predictable. I just love the story where the hero falls in darkness in the name love.
Don't now how Bloodlines and Order of Ecclesia are at 7 & 6 while listing Circle of the Moon above them. Could have easily been replaced by one of these not on the list (Portrait of Ruin or Rondo of Blood). At least 1 and 2 are spot on.
The problem with Castlevania 3 is that it adds too many branches that make it a bit tedious. Granth's route adds almost nothing of value. Alucard's route between levels 5 and 6 adds unnecessary branches. Also, being able to play it solo with Trevor adds challenge, and in level 7 of Alucard's route you almost necessarily have to use Alucard at some points.
Portrait of Ruin was one of my favorites. Dual protagonists, vibrant environments, great music and I like the idea of another powerful vampire lord throwing up his hands and saying 'Screw it, Dracula's failed to conquer humanity like ten times now! I *know* I can do better than him!'. That's the... spirit.
No portrait if ruin? It's one of the best castlevania games, all the DS ones are. Symphony will remain objectively the best since it revolutionized the series while the rest just took the elements from symphony and improved upon them. Anyway Symphony, Super Castlevania 4, the DS titles, Aria of Sorrow, and the original are the best in the series.

A good list! From those that are not mentioned, I personally would've included Curse of Darkness (a very underappreciated 3Dvania with a nice familiar-levelling system, memorable characters and amazing soundtrack), Portrait of Ruin (another DS Castlevania and here we can swap between two playable characters at will) and Rondo of Blood (one of the classic style Castlevanias which I think is way better than the NES ones).
Super Castlevania 4, Castlevania 3, The Castlevania Adventure: Rebirth, and Rondo of Blood are easily better than any of the dumbed down Iga-vania entries. It doesn't surprise me that a mainstream casual crowd pandering channel like Watch Mojo would put that crap up on a pedestal though.
Been a Castlevania fan since the 80's with the first game. I've never played Symphony of the Night but it's on my bucket list. I love Castlevania and Metroid so SOTN sounds like a match made in heaven.
Well not sure if you played it by now but trust me and the user above, the game is awesome and still hold up to this, plus this game did create the term metroidvania
As much as I agree the original Castlevania deserves to be on this list somewhere, I think it’s a little ridiculous do rank something so high based on how good it WAS. It being revolutionary back in the day has no effect on how fun it is to play almost 40 years after its release.

Most people would include Rondo of Blood on a top ten list. Definitely over Bloodlines and Lords of Shadow. I also enjoyed Castlevania II: Simon's Quest growing up. It's darker than most Castlevania's.

😮 I am actually shocked Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (Dracula X Chronicles) is not on this list, it literally to me is the best in the series. I actually go back and forth which I like best between symphony of the night and rondo of blood but most of the time Rondo of Blood takes that number one spot.

I could never get into Castlevania Symphony of the Night, it was too hard and the difficulty was too much, i did enjoy Bloodstained Ritual of the Night though

Lords of Shadows apart from the narrative and characters is not that good. It has blind spots with a fixed camera, horrorifying input delay and the DLC sucks. No Rondo of Blood?! This video is just wrong.

Castlevania 3 Dracula’s curse and Rondo of Blood are the absolute fucking best. Perfect linear gameplay
Plus in Symphony of the Night you can play the whole game as Richter Belmont and i believe Maria Renard
Maria is only playable in the Saturn, PSP, and PS4 versions of SotN

I know it's hard to believe, but SoTN has actually been surpassed (a few times) in the last 27 years. Nostalgia is important, but so is progress.
I have only played Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and its the reason why I want to play the rest.

We have a top 10 list without mentioning Rondo of Blood, Portrait of Ruin, and Harmony of Dissonance? Seems more likely the writer played 10 games and said that should be fine.
Lords of Shadows apart from the narrative and characters is not that good. It has blind spots with a fixed camera, horrorifying input delay and the DLC sucks.
