  • Last night I went out to see this band play…the legendary Toronto blues band Downchild, formed in 1969 by brothers Richie “Hock” Walsh and Donnie “Mr Downchild” Walsh and have been recording and performing steadily since they formed. This is the farewell tour.
Of the 2 brothers, only Donnie remains. Mr. Downchild himself…crack guitarist.. smokin’ harp player. The movie The Blues Brothers was inspired by this band and many of their songs are performed by the band in the movie. Dan Ackroyd has been quoted saying “if there was no Downchild, there would be no Blues Brothers”
Anyhow to me it was a rare rare Friday night going to see a band play with friends and it was a really great night 😎👍
God bless and sit back for some fine Toronto blues music!
I do not own the copyright for these songs they are for entertainment purposes only

In an early interview I read John belushi was quoted as saying “the Blues Brothers would 100% not exist without Downchild” ie Flip Flop Fly is a Downchild song and the Blues Brothers used to play a few of their tunes live all the time. The boys were all good friends, Toronto was common ground for them all.

that's partially right because of Dan Akroyd's connection to Toronto. But, John Belushi was filming Animal House in Eugene when he met Curtis Salgado performing at The Eugene Hotel when he was with Robert Cray. Belushi had Curtis come over to his place in Eugene and turned him on to this music. Curtis I always heard was the main inspiration for the band, and their first record was dedicated to him. So it was sort of the combination of Downchild, and Curtis.
The band sounds great. I just sorta got burned out on Chicago Blues. But, there's nothing like it for sure.

I’m sure you’re correct about all that, but I was quoting from an interview with Dan Ackroyd about Downchild, so perspective is everything lol.
You know Jon, on the whole I really put big band Chicago blues low on my personal favorite blues styles…I really don’t listen to much of the big band high polish horn section blues but Downchild is kinda part of the soundtrack of my life, being a musician and music fan in Toronto. I also was really stoked to get out downtown past 8pm lol…I was able to make it so it would be comfortable to go out and I had not seen a live band (like where I bought a ticket and had a seat at…not including gigs I’ve played on) since I was in New Orléans in 2018 so it was just good to be out with my friends on a Friday going to see a band play. It was also kinda strange being one of the youngest people there…and I’m in my 50’s.
But Downchild has been playing since 69…50 years…Ol Donnie Walsh certainly can still play amazing but I gotta say that he stepped on quite a few clams during the show 😖. It’s the farewell tour and I do think it’s time.

Yeah Donnie is both an awesome slide guitar player and harmonica player! He is showing signs of aging but he’s still a great player 👍👍👍
