Waltz is Austrian, German is his native language, French also is used language in part of Austria and Switzerland, English is basic language for people today and much easier to learn imho than German and probably very easy to learn for German native speaker. Italian also isn't hard to learn and is also used in some part of Austria. besides German language he is speaking is Hochdeutsch, official language in Germany, Germans have many other regional dialects which are so different so they're like another languages hard even for Germans from other parts of the counry.

Yes, but he has an Achilles Heel. He's unpredictable because he's not fully into the Nazi ideology. Basically he's an evil bastard, unfortunately for him he's gay, in the closet & in a relationship with Hermann. So an Untermensch. BTW dude I won't get into it. It's extremely hard to spot but when you see it there are multiple hints throughout the movie e.g. Tarantino makes sure we hear Hermann's name at the beginning of the movie & again in 1944.
This scene is one of the best in cinema history. Christoph Waltz performance is insane. The way he goes from pure kindness and gentleness to a terrifying phychopath is astonishing. Furthermore, he performs both personalities flawlessly. What an incredible actor.

I do love the way Landa arrives. The soldier to the right of Shosanna is very uncaring of his surroundings and does not necessarily treat Goebbels, Hitler’s right hand man, with much respect but as soon as Landa arrives he stands to attention as if he had been training his whole life for that specific moment. Truly amazing.
That's cause unlike the living zombie man Landa was an actual military officer and he HAS to stand at attention for him or get shot or whatever Nazis did to insubordinate soldiers

His very presence alone is meant to be acknowledged and anticipated by all military members, all the while wearing his military dress uniform meaning he’s announcing his presence in a formal ceremony.
his arrival is done extraordinarily well. its extremely quick, the viewer given no time to think- we, and shoshona, are simply thrown into his presence. the salute of the other nazi and the sounds put us into her headspace of immediate and overwhelming terror. its like being punched in the chest. the pan up to landa is almost luxuriant, giving us the sense that Landa is impossibly aware of all of this, that he is already reveling in the terror he wields. the flashback puts us into shoshona's head, showing the memory that undoubtedly came back to her in this moment. its all so well done. before his arrival, the scene is not very stressful. there is no reason to suspect shoshona is in any immediate danger of detection, there might even be an inkling of her idea to take advantage of the venue change. landa's arrival is fine-tuned to shock the viewer, taking their breathe away and punching them with the shocking, unexpected horror and the desperate need to keep it concealed. its all very much like falling flat on your back from a ten foot fall, and a masterful demonstration of how to communicate a character's headspace.
If you ever wonder why all of the sounds so prominent or clear or crisp, from him putting sugar in his coffee to the sound of the fork on the plate, or why its unnerving, its because in a state of anxiety or fear, the adrenaline in your body makes you notice sights and sounds more intensely. In using sound in the manner he does, QT literally puts you in Shoshanna's fear and anxiety riddled seat.
Agreed but it also heaaavvvillllyyy has to do with the foley and sound design. That wasn’t by accident. They really intensified the sounds in this movie from wood creaking, to the sugar, milk pouring etc
@@andydrew3320 I think the point is the sound design was used to induce the effect normally resulting from the kind of fear and anxiety someone in jeopardy of their life would feel. It is brilliant sound engineering to achieve an effect that would normally take a pulse pounding load of adrenaline to induce.
Fun Fact: not only it was him ordering the milk, it was the fact he insisted for her to wait for the cream. It was WW2 so due to shortage of supplies, pastries were made with pig fat. Consuming milk or cream is against her religion. Hans pretty much made sure to terrorize her in every way he could in a situation like that (in a restaurant). And he made sure to let her know that he knew... he just didn't care enough to finish the job; but leaving her with an always present insecurity and unsteadyness of him being around and knowing her, was enough torment for her.
i thought the specific of the religion was that you could not eat the product of the animal with the animal itself, not so much that she cant drink milk or eat cream, but the combination of milk or cream with the struddel (with animal fat in it) was forbidden edit: oh it's this: "Certain foods, notably pork, shellfish and almost all insects are forbidden; meat and dairy may not be combined and meat must be ritually slaughtered and salted to remove all traces of blood. Observant Jews will eat only meat or poultry that is certified kosher"
I'm almost positive that ordering the glass of milk, and the moment later on when he says _"I had something else I wanted to ask you..._ [silence] _...but I can't remember what it was!"_ are his way of telling her _"I know who you are, Shoshana. But I no longer care about it."_
Good observation. Because he definitely knows who she is. As a matter of fact he needs her for his own purpose, as laid out in the end of the movie. I also think the cigarette offering and the stare was to see if she was nervous and/or trembling.
I believe this too however I also believe him not outright saying it was him getting a kick out of having fun and agonizing her a bit. The stare felt like confirmation of that. It also was as if letting her know she couldn't get away and in the end he won by cornering her. Her escaping and life was so inconsequential and more like a game to him that he didn't need to do anything further. She couldve easily been arrested or killed if he cared right there and then
Not so much that he didn’t care more like the timing wasn’t right. Goebbels was planning his premiere at her theater and him disrupting those plans would put him on his shit list. After the premiere he could take her down whenever he wanted to.
One part I love about this scene is when Landa asks Shoshanna about her projectionist at 4:30, it's the only part of the interrogation in which Shoshanna answers more than what was directly asked. After responding "Oui" to his initial yes/no question, she proceeds to describes who Marcel is, his name, how she came to know him, etc. without being prompted by further questions. Even in as stressful of a situation as she was in, you can clearly see her admiration for Marcel, which outweighed her anxiety and she speaks more freely for a moment.
It’s common in interrogations for people to indulge information about something that is true in order to build their credibility while keeping it short/vague when they are lying to hide the lie. She spoke freely about marcel bc it wasn’t seen as a threatening line of questioning.
As someone who was born in the same city as Goebbels, I am amazed how much they nailed his accent. The level of detail even for minor roles is astounding and one of the reasons why I love Tarantino's movies.
Melanie Laurent looks average when sitting next to Christoph Waltz(or anyone else in the movie tbh, not just her), but she is also a pretty phenomenal actor herself.
it's a German expression = "Da sind Sie ja!, meaning = There you are!, Like "Oh Landa there you are!" "Aaa Landa Da sind Sie ja!" - I don't know why the Germans say it. They use it very often when somebody arrived, but you waited for him a little bit longer then usual.
The german language has many words with multiple meanings for example the word „auf“ can mean up,open or let‘s go. It depends upon circumstances in wich it‘s being used
This is literally my favourite dialogue scene of any movie ever. The fact that they speak German and French during the whole scene so that you pay attention (if you don't speak German and French) and the way Landa came in so unexpectedly is just beautifully crafted by QT. You can literally feel Shosanna's terror the whole way through.
Honestly if you speak both you still have to pay attention my brain does fucking backflips when I watch movies with more than two languages if I can understand them.

I think this scene was designed for viewers to be on the fence about it all. He could have known but maybe not. I think he knew. I just think it humored him to let her live seeing as how he could have killed her twice but he decides not to as if she's his little experiment. "How far can she make it in this world if I spare her?" I think he was impressed with how successful she became so he spares her again.
He was one of those villains that made your stomach uneasy every time he was on screen. He was that good. He sucked the air out of any room he walked into!
@@orangewarm1 Yes, in a way, almost everything is. But that’s not what counts. Tarantino manages to make movies that go above normal pieces that thrill and entertain. His movies are enchanting, they are funny, witty, at the same time filled with incredible darkness. Look at Landa: He’s one of the worst people in the movie, in the beginning he sentenced a family to die after breaking a French farmer, and yet, he plays his part so charismatically and with such grace that one cannot help but somehow like him. This is what makes a good Tarantino picture better than the rest of Hollywood. You can see Tarantino’s genius in the failure of the villains in the marvel movies: Look at Loki, look at Ultron, look at… That blue dude (Thanos I think?). All of them carry incredible power, way more than Lands could ever dream of having, and yet, are they scary? Does Loki scare you? Does Ultron? How about Thanos? They’re poorly written comic villains who serve as comedic relief and mcguffins to further the plot. To excuse the wanton destruction the Avengers subject the world to all the time. It’s bad writing.
I may be totally overthinking this, but I like Shosanna's subtle widening of the eyes at 3:46 after her first taste of the strudel. It's as if despite the fear and anxiety she's feeling at the time, she's still able to appreciate how surprisingly good the strudel is!
"soul snatching look." There's another one of those in "Three Days of the Condor." Max von Sydow gives Robert Redford such a stare in an elevator. One of those "I'm saying 100 words with this one look" moments.

Waltz steals the scene every time, but Laurent gets major props, too. Her anguish of reliving the slaying of her entire family and the hatred she has for the evil man sitting in front of her pierces my soul in this scene.
"May I call you Emmanuelle?" - Even this little piece of dialogue shows how truly multidismensional this scene is. Add the fact that he ordered milk for her, it shows us he knows perfectly well who she is. He is playing his ultimate dominance card by showing her that despite the fact, that he knows, he's not affraid of her in any way and in a sense she lives by his mercy.
Notice how he takes a moment to look at her after her response, same as he did with the cream, which the french waiter oh so bravely served less of to the occupator.
@@Proxym Was the farmer the father? If I remember correctly the guy was hiding a jew family but he wasn't a jew himself, we are introduced to the farmer's daughters in that very scene, Shoshana wasn't one of them, she was hiding under the floorboards with the other jews, her family
"Wait for the creme" always stuck with me. It might be a reach but by 1944 butter was very hard to come by pork lard was at times used as a substitute. Pork being clearly not kosher and his insistence on her waiting for the creme I read as him taking another jab at her Jewish faith, another opportunity to revel his own sadism.

Kjwkjw I have a idea that he realised what letting the fuhre and goebells go into the theatre could do for him, (which was the last scene) so he decided not to blow shoshannes cover and let her take in the nazis into her theatre and then him guessing that she’s gunna do something to kill them like set it on fire as she did.
He definitely hasn't forgotten. He's just tormenting and intimidating her. He mentions her being anxious near the beginning of the conversation already sensing she's frightened and orders dairy foods for her reminiscent of the farm where she escaped from him. He also notes that the cigarettes are not actually French, they're German, identity symbolism. The long pause is just to make her fear she's been caught.
U can feel the intensity of the Evil energy enter the room when landa came inside, omg the guitar riff completely captures it immensely. Such a powerful scene and also captures Emmanuels emotions of rage, vengeance but most of all FEAR.
And for good reason, QT was about to give up on trying to find an actor who could speak English, German, French and Italian when Christopher quite literally Waltzed in... Haha
Brad pitt, oddly, had the worst performance in the cast. This movie made me realize that brad pitt is a mediocre actor. I mean his performance in se7en is quite complex for me. I don’t know if he really nailed it or not especially that “what’s in the box” part. I dont clearly know if it is good or bad but his performance here? Very clear…. Quite bad.
Tarantino is a genius. The closeups of food is one of his trademarks. The hamburger scene in Pulp Fiction is echoed by this strudel scene. Wonderful stuff.
I love the ambiguity around this scene. It really cements Landa’s character as this cunning opportunist. He could very well recognize Shoshanna and have her arrested, but it would be inconvenient and unnecessary for him considering that he’s off the job and doesn’t want to make things more stressful for Goebbels. Still, the implications of him letting her go shows how he really views people. He’s only loyal to the party as far as it benefits him, and would betray his duty just out of convenience. And even so he acts courteous while flaunting his power over Shoshanna: if she makes a move he’s poised to expose her. But there’s also the possibility that he doesn’t know and it’s all in her head! Landa’s the best character Tarantino ever wrote, and everything about him and his relationship to the other characters is summed up beautifully in this scene. Literally could not be more perfect!
Hunting the Jews for Hitler was no longer his primary concern. Stabbing the nazis in the back and jumping from the sinking ship like a rat was his primary focus.
One thing I love about this scene is the way Landa says “est c’est vrai?” at 4:34 with that scandalous little smile, like he’s a young woman discussing the latest salacious gossip.
This scene is Tarantino's Brilliance in a nutshell. The layers of drama hidden behind placid faces, the heightened and unbearable tension highlighted by every sound made being more acute and the subtle and unmistakable way he lets you know that Landa knows everything when he orders her a glass of milk. Compound that with the soulless face of his when he says he has one last question for her. He doesn't have a question because he knows the answer. Just brilliant filmmaking.
Why? As incredible a villain he was, he was also a smarmy snake who thought himself invincible. Raine's speech to him and subsequent punishment was the ultimate karmic justice. He may live, but tough luck living a peaceful life in post-war America with a friggin' swastika on your forehead. Beyond that, it would be a constant reminder of who he was and what he had to live with; and Raine made sure he would *never* forget it.
My favourite scene in the movie. I love the cat and mouse game going on and how Shoshanna is able to keep the mother of all game faces even when Hans plays his hand and orders her the glass of milk.
The way Landa toys with his prey is amazing. Love the parallel between the first scene, how it sandwiches the original's progression, first starting with the glass of milk. Then his subtle change in demeanor at 6:26, similar to where he says to the farmer "you're sheltering enemies of the state are you not."
The way the other SS officer stands at attention for Landa as soon as he enters, with Emmanuelle slowly looking above, in addition to the music getting louder and more intense. EPIC SCENE. Great acting by all.
her holding her self together in front of the man responsible for the brutal murder of her family right till the end of his departure and then breaking down is impressive. the entire scene is great , from the start of the announcement of Hans Landa is here to her sobbing quietly.
Every time he asked anyone a question they felt like they were being investigated. Even the most innocent sounding questions. One time I witnessed a verbal altercation at my fire department and I got called in and questioned by our investigator guy who used to be internal affairs at a large police department and (obviously to a much lesser extent) he felt like Landa where every question he asked you was loaded and he was looking for a specific answer he already knew. It was an awful feeling and I wasn't even the one in trouble. Very good performance by Walz.
It's from the horror film, the Entity. The ghost in the movie rapes the main character to it. It's a little bit more horrific, but in this it works to show Shoshana's terror pretty well. As for the film itself, it's a pretty decent watch.
Landa's facial expression starting with 6:31 is priceless; you can see his nostril move like the narcissist that he is, indicating a violent thought went through his mind.
This is awesome!!! "I forgot the cream..." Waltz raised this film to a completely different level. With his "secondary" role, he totally dominates the entire film every second he appears. Quentin Tarantino, I congratulate you on the choice of actor and on the dialogues and scenes in all your films. There are roles that were created just for one actor and you hit the nail on the head here. A masterpiece, well done Mr. Tarantino, well done Mr. Waltz.

I believe this too however I also believe him not outright saying it was him getting a kick out of having fun and agonizing her a bit. The stare felt like confirmation of that. It also was as if letting her know she couldn't get away and in the end he won by cornering her. Her escaping and life was so inconsequential and more like a game to him that he didn't need to do anything further. She couldve easily been arrested or killed if he cared right there and then
Not so much that he didn’t care more like the timing wasn’t right. Goebbels was planning his premiere at her theater and him disrupting those plans would put him on his shit list. After the premiere he could take her down whenever he wanted to.

One part I love about this scene is when Landa asks Shoshanna about her projectionist at 4:30, it's the only part of the interrogation in which Shoshanna answers more than what was directly asked. After responding "Oui" to his initial yes/no question, she proceeds to describes who Marcel is, his name, how she came to know him, etc. without being prompted by further questions. Even in as stressful of a situation as she was in, you can clearly see her admiration for Marcel, which outweighed her anxiety and she speaks more freely for a moment.
I think it's more the fact she was trying to protect Marcel. She wanted to make sure he was seen as a key component to the operation of the theater.

It’s common in interrogations for people to indulge information about something that is true in order to build their credibility while keeping it short/vague when they are lying to hide the lie. She spoke freely about marcel bc it wasn’t seen as a threatening line of questioning.

This is literally my favourite dialogue scene of any movie ever. The fact that they speak German and French during the whole scene so that you pay attention (if you don't speak German and French) and the way Landa came in so unexpectedly is just beautifully crafted by QT. You can literally feel Shosanna's terror the whole way through.
Honestly if you speak both you still have to pay attention my brain does fucking backflips when I watch movies with more than two languages if I can understand them.

I think this scene was designed for viewers to be on the fence about it all. He could have known but maybe not. I think he knew. I just think it humored him to let her live seeing as how he could have killed her twice but he decides not to as if she's his little experiment. "How far can she make it in this world if I spare her?" I think he was impressed with how successful she became so he spares her again.

His movies are enchanting, they are funny, witty, at the same time filled with incredible darkness. Look at Landa: He’s one of the worst people in the movie, in the beginning he sentenced a family to die after breaking a French farmer, and yet, he plays his part so charismatically and with such grace that one cannot help but somehow like him. This is what makes a good Tarantino picture better than the rest of Hollywood. You can see Tarantino’s genius in the failure of the villains in the marvel movies: Look at Loki, look at Ultron, look at… That blue dude (Thanos I think?). All of them carry incredible power, way more than Lands could ever dream of having, and yet, are they scary? Does Loki scare you? Does Ultron? How about Thanos? They’re poorly written comic villains who serve as comedic relief and mcguffins to further the plot. To excuse the wanton destruction the Avengers subject the world to all the time. It’s bad writing.

"May I call you Emmanuelle?" - Even this little piece of dialogue shows how truly multidismensional this scene is. Add the fact that he ordered milk for her, it shows us he knows perfectly well who she is. He is playing his ultimate dominance card by showing her that despite the fact, that he knows, he's not affraid of her in any way and in a sense she lives by his mercy.
Notice how he takes a moment to look at her after her response, same as he did with the cream, which the french waiter oh so bravely served less of to the occupator.

"Wait for the creme" always stuck with me. It might be a reach but by 1944 butter was very hard to come by pork lard was at times used as a substitute.
Pork being clearly not kosher and his insistence on her waiting for the creme I read as him taking another jab at her Jewish faith, another opportunity to revel his own sadism.

Kjwkjw I have a idea that he realised what letting the fuhre and goebells go into the theatre could do for him, (which was the last scene) so he decided not to blow shoshannes cover and let her take in the nazis into her theatre and then him guessing that she’s gunna do something to kill them like set it on fire as she did.
He definitely hasn't forgotten. He's just tormenting and intimidating her. He mentions her being anxious near the beginning of the conversation already sensing she's frightened and orders dairy foods for her reminiscent of the farm where she escaped from him. He also notes that the cigarettes are not actually French, they're German, identity symbolism. The long pause is just to make her fear she's been caught.

U can feel the intensity of the Evil energy enter the room when landa came inside, omg the guitar riff completely captures it immensely. Such a powerful scene and also captures Emmanuels emotions of rage, vengeance but most of all FEAR.

Tarantino is a genius. The closeups of food is one of his trademarks. The hamburger scene in Pulp Fiction is echoed by this strudel scene. Wonderful stuff.

I love the ambiguity around this scene. It really cements Landa’s character as this cunning opportunist. He could very well recognize Shoshanna and have her arrested, but it would be inconvenient and unnecessary for him considering that he’s off the job and doesn’t want to make things more stressful for Goebbels. Still, the implications of him letting her go shows how he really views people. He’s only loyal to the party as far as it benefits him, and would betray his duty just out of convenience. And even so he acts courteous while flaunting his power over Shoshanna: if she makes a move he’s poised to expose her. But there’s also the possibility that he doesn’t know and it’s all in her head! Landa’s the best character Tarantino ever wrote, and everything about him and his relationship to the other characters is summed up beautifully in this scene. Literally could not be more perfect!
Amazing interpretation
Hunting the Jews for Hitler was no longer his primary concern. Stabbing the nazis in the back and jumping from the sinking ship like a rat was his primary focus.
Even Tarantino admits Landa is his best
One thing I love about this scene is the way Landa says “est c’est vrai?” at 4:34 with that scandalous little smile, like he’s a young woman discussing the latest salacious gossip.

This scene is Tarantino's Brilliance in a nutshell. The layers of drama hidden behind placid faces, the heightened and unbearable tension highlighted by every sound made being more acute and the subtle and unmistakable way he lets you know that Landa knows everything when he orders her a glass of milk. Compound that with the soulless face of his when he says he has one last question for her. He doesn't have a question because he knows the answer. Just brilliant filmmaking.

Beyond that, it would be a constant reminder of who he was and what he had to live with; and Raine made sure he would *never* forget it.

My favourite scene in the movie. I love the cat and mouse game going on and how Shoshanna is able to keep the mother of all game faces even when Hans plays his hand and orders her the glass of milk.

This and the opening scene were some of the most tense movie scenes ever and its just two people talking at a table
The way Landa toys with his prey is amazing. Love the parallel between the first scene, how it sandwiches the original's progression, first starting with the glass of milk. Then his subtle change in demeanor at 6:26, similar to where he says to the farmer "you're sheltering enemies of the state are you not."
She played the emotion of disgust beautifully in this scene. Christoph steals the show, but there is superb acting from all in this film.

Every time he asked anyone a question they felt like they were being investigated. Even the most innocent sounding questions. One time I witnessed a verbal altercation at my fire department and I got called in and questioned by our investigator guy who used to be internal affairs at a large police department and (obviously to a much lesser extent) he felt like Landa where every question he asked you was loaded and he was looking for a specific answer he already knew. It was an awful feeling and I wasn't even the one in trouble. Very good performance by Walz.
Landa suddenly entering with that music gave me Heath Ledger vibes.
It's from the horror film, the Entity. The ghost in the movie rapes the main character to it. It's a little bit more horrific, but in this it works to show Shoshana's terror pretty well. As for the film itself, it's a pretty decent watch.
Waltz makes me forget Brad Pitt is in this movie too
and that despite the fact that Brad Pitt does an amazing job. But Waltz is priceless in this movie
Landa is the definition of fear and tension. This scene is absolutely brilliant
that music and entrance elevates this scene to god level
Landa's facial expression starting with 6:31 is priceless; you can see his nostril move like the narcissist that he is, indicating a violent thought went through his mind.
This is awesome!!! "I forgot the cream..." Waltz raised this film to a completely different level. With his "secondary" role, he totally dominates the entire film every second he appears. Quentin Tarantino, I congratulate you on the choice of actor and on the dialogues and scenes in all your films. There are roles that were created just for one actor and you hit the nail on the head here. A masterpiece, well done Mr. Tarantino, well done Mr. Waltz.
This man deserves an Oscar, an Academy award, a SAG award, god dammit, why not even a Soul Train award too

His french is sooooo good! Old fashioned Paris accent, with a tiny bitsy german one. It suits the character so well! And the acting is insane!

God Tarantino s use of food as a mechanism for domination and suspense is masterful.
