I am French and I don't speak English very well. sorry about that. but I wanted to say that to see a guy of your age, talk about Daniel Balavoine, I find that's amazing! in addition to listening, which is already very cool, you explain the song, you translate the lyrics, it's great what you do, keep going. Daniel Balavoine was an extraordinary artist, songwriter and performer. He tragically died in a helicopter crash in the African desert, during the famous 1986 Paris-Dakar car race, i was 6.. He was a brilliant artist, and he was very committed. He denounced injustice, racism and intolerance. it was reflected in his words. Words that are still relevant today, 40 years later ...
He sang this in tv for the first ... and the last time. Some weeks later, he died in helicopter accident. When you understand the lyrics, you can think "c'est le destin". Same for gregory, rip angel.
In my opinion Dimash's version is technichally perfect (and beautiful) but as he doesn't understand what he's singing I find it has a lesser emotional impact.
Please Dimash has emotion of an oyster... He sings only to show he has a voice and do not feel what he s singing because he doesn t know/undestand what he is singing
What is great with Balavoine is that even with all the lows and highs and strenghts that this song is asking, he still keeps a fragile "human quality" in his voice.
For me, the two most beautiful interpretations of this song are those of Balavoine, obviously, but also and especially that of Grégory Lemarchal during his time at the Star Académy. Tears always overwhelm me when interpreting Grégory. Still, I didn't watch this show and wasn't particularly a fan of him. But it's really powerful what he does with it. To know also, for the anecdote, that Grégory, carrier of the cystic fibrosis, had literally stunned his comrades for this song, because a few seconds before entering on stage, he was taken by a coughing fit and was in the process of to shout. The fact that he has no more breath and manages to take it back just when entering the stage is bluffing!
This song is not a dance song. It is a meditation song. The lyrics are very very VERY important. You listen to them, and think... and possibly cry. So emotional!
How great Dimash voice is, I still love Daniel Balavoine version better. This song is about a man who is about to commit suicide, you can really feel pain in Daniel's, not in Dimash's. Thank you Deteck.
I totally disagree, i can feel the emotion just the same..if not more. In the first verse this guy is all over the place pitch wise. So its all perception
As I said in your last Daniel Balavoine reaction. This song was written especially for his voice. They already chose Daniel Balavoine for the role in Starmania, Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon asked him to do the lowest note he could and the highest and wrote the song especially to gives him the opportunity to use his full tessiture (2,5 octaves)
I personally like Grégory Lemarchal's cover of this song a little bit more, but Balavoine's performance is still exceptional. Lemarchal knew his days were numbered because of his cystic fibrosis, so his cover felt to me like Freddy Mercury's The Show Must Go On when it comes to intensity.
When you said "this song was made for him" and it's so true. But when you're french and you grew up with Gregory Lemarchal, who sing this song perfectly, knowing that he was going to die young because he was sick... He died only few years after this performance, and for me he sang it like he actually write the song, maybe you can react to his version because he was a master, a living angel, pure soul and he died so young... Peace to both of their souls, and Daniel and Gregory 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✨✨✨
It's so nice to see you react to so many French singers/songs. We hear these songs since we're kids but listening to them with you makes them brand new. It gets very emotional and its give a new perspective on our kinda national soundtrack. Thank you so much for what's you're doing on your channel :)
If I remember well, in that part of the opera-rock, his girlfriend was just assassinated, he explains he was never meant for this world, he doesn't feel at ease here, he didn't get lucky in the "world's lottery". He just wants to escape (like a bird/ talk of metamorphosis), doesn't want to accept the routine (work sleep, repeat). The part you don't get: I never had my feet on the ground/ I would rather be a bird/ I don't feel comfortable in my own skin/ I would like to see the world upside down/ What if it was more beautiful/ more beautiful seen from above/ from aboooooooooooove :) I don't want to be a robot/ Subway, work, sleep
Omg they’re all so beautiful and powerful, I love Starmania and have always have ❤️❤️❤️ the one I’ve related most with, throughout my life, is « complainte d’une serveuse automate »

Too bad there is not "Dieu Que C'Est Beau" an unreleased 1984 in this album, released only as a single and that some do not have video clips but only TV performances which are either of poor quality or "truncated" or rare. I bought this album on CD a few years later but also the double CD compilation released in 1999 which includes the photo of the album or one of the 45 rpm of it, and most recently the 100 songs compilationin box released this year .
It's so cool to see Americans discover Daniel who is greatly missed. Hope you'll do 'mon fils m'a bataille' (my son, my fight), a song about a man who is fighting to get custody of his son when the boy's mom left. Written in the 80s when father's rights in France meant shit.
What a pleasure to hear this wonderful song and this great artist Daniel Balavoine I cry every time I hear it. I am happy that after 30 years we rediscover his repertoire. Thank you Dereck
Daniel Balavoine is a legend here in France. And this song here is one of the many reasons why. He wasn't just singing his songs, he lived them. He really sung with his soul and heart. That is why the cover by Dimash will never come close to this. He's ridiculously good with his voice, but at the end of the day, it's just a performance. An extraordinary one, but this song in particular is something else.
@@teresaz-l2963 Balavoine's version is better than Dimash version. Balavoine knows how he's singing. Dimash no. Dimash is a robot with an amazing voice, Balavoine was a singer
Extract from Starmania, one of the first French musical, created by Michel Berger (France Gall's husband). Awesome voice. Just love that guy. To be discovered from that musical "Quand on arrive en ville" and "Plus rien à perdre". To be noted the English version Tycoon and the masterpiece covered by Cindy Lauper "Learn to live alone"
If you listen Daniel Balavoine’s song more often, you will love him more and more, but I promise you, you will be able to do it with your mouth closed. 😉😉 You definitely should react to the Gregory Lemarchal version. Considering the fate of Gregory, I would quote Ashildr and the Doctor: - I’ve been watching the stars die and it was beautiful. - No, it was sad. - No, it was both.
Here, "terrien" means human, earthling. Yes it was composed specifically for Daniel by MICHEL BERGER, France GALL's husband (he also composed most of her songs). I hope you'll react to MICHEL BERGER soon because like Jean-Jacques GOLDMAN & Daniel Balavoine, he's the GENIUS composer of countless hit songs. Johnny HALLYDAY also has countless hit songs but he relied on talented composers rather than composing himself
Performance is incredible but you have to understand the lyrics to FEEL and LIVE the song. I'm french and not a fan of Balavoine, but this specific song with the lyrics and interpretation are OUTSTANDING.

Now you listen to Daniel Balavoine and this guy in a recent guy, you HAVE TO listen to Gregory Lemar Hal singing this song. When you discover his profile, you will know what is emotion too with him
Il nous manque. Dereck Starmania was written by Luc Plamandon and Michel Berger, France Gall's husband. You shoult also listen to "Evidemment" by France Gall, very emotional song written after Daniel's death.
Best title translation I've seen: S.O.S. from an Earthling in Distress. Starmania is where Balavoine was discovered. Starmania was an enormous success when it came out in 1978. It's full of exceptional songs. Several songs are still known (SOS is one, but a couple of other songs are Le Monde est Stone (Cindy Lauper sang it in English); Le Blues du Businessman (Celine Dion sings it) ). "Besoin d'Amour" was France Gall's big success out of this Rock Opera. Personally, I love Balavoine singing Banlieue Nord and Quand on Arrive en Ville. But seriously, there are so many excellent songs in this show, it's really hard to choose one. You can familiarize yourself with it by listening to the original cast. It's unlikely you'll find many videos from that time so you're safe just listening to get familiar with it. A new version of Starmania was supposed to hit the stage in Paris in November 2021. It's been postponed, but hopefully it will happen in 2022 :-) Enjoy!
BTW, if you watch Starmania, I recommend watching the 1989 version (here is one with subtitles so you get the meaning: th-cam.com/video/VKF_SqeKTYo/w-d-xo.html ). I guarantee you will be SHOCKED by what's in the plot, particularly how a successful business man becomes the president of the western world. Remember this was written in 1976. Starmania was completely visionary. A lot of the intrigue has actually come to pass. I can't wait to see how they update it in 2022...
Oh, I didn't know a new version of Starmania was in the work! I was lucky enough to see the 3rd rendition of it (1994 I think?) at the Mogador theatre, probably why I love this version equally with the original one :) To add a bit background information for @DereckReacts and the people not familiar with the musical, Starmania was adapted in English under the title "Tycoon" and this specific song, under the title "Only the very best". As for the story behind the song, the character Daniel was playing just lost the love of his life who died in his arms - which is why he says he's rather "be a bird". After finally meeting the person who understood him and completed him only to loose her soon after, he doesn't want to live on this planet anymore. I'm glad you were able to feel his sadness and despair in his voice even without understanding the lyrics (and the translation you had sure is wonky).
for me, it's the most beautiful version because you feel all the emotion and the depth of this eternal song. daniel balavoine sang it long before this performance (1985) and he sang it even better in my opinion and went up a lot more in the treble, but I believe that unfortunately this version cannot be found. the 1979 version is just amazing!
Daniel Balavoine always makes me cry. I was 12 when he passed away and i had been raised listening to his music. His voice was incredible but he also was a great character ! His death, so young, was a real tragedy. He was so concerned by the misery of our world. He was still a young singer when he came to the TV news and tell what he thought, to the president of the republic Francois Mitterand, face to face, about French youth. After that he got engaged in many projects against hunger and lack of water in Africa. He also was very implicated in the fight against racism. He, Michel Berger and Jean-Jacques Goldman were very good friends. Just after Daniel Balavoine passed away, Jean-Jacques Goldman was invited in a TV show to sing his current song but as he knew his friend was dead, he decided not to sing this song. He sang a song, titled "Confidentiel" that wasn't meant to be a single but it was a wonderful tribute to his friend. He changed, a little bit of the lyrics to make it more personal and it was breath-taking : th-cam.com/video/E5kquAOcBPc/w-d-xo.html
Dereck, you absolutely have to read a translation of the lyrics while listening : it'll break your heart for sure ! This is all talking about love of humanity. As a french born in the 70s, I growed up listening to Balavoine at the radio and TV, before his tragic death in 1986. :'(
you are totally right about the fact that this song was written for him. The composer Michel Berger was friends with Daniel Balavoine and wrote the song specificaly for his range of voice. Nobody nailed that song like him for that reason ;)
Indeed, the musical helpt his carrer a lot! This songe was in 1979 and his first great solo succes was about the same time with "le Chanteur " 1980. This musical is full of great succes here in France !
Hello Dereck and thank you for your particular interest in French music. The original version of the rock opera Starmania sung by Balavoine deeply moves the viewer. His voice and the intensity he puts into his interpretation is unique. The English version "only the very best" by Peter Kingsbery does not equal it. However, if you have not already listened to it, I invite you to listen to the version of the singer Grégory Lemarchal whose interpretation is overwhelming. Beyond the music itself and the too short career of this singer who died of cystic fibrosis, this version is even more charged with emotion ... A song cut out for him and for his voice where you can feel all his thirst for life despite illness. Try this version if you don't already know it and if you are curious, find out about the tragic trajectories of these two singers, Balavoine and Lemarchal because ironically, both died too early.
Beautiful covers of "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" by Piet Arion and Grégory Lemarchal. And english versions exist with title "Only the very best" by Peter Kingsbery and Marina Kaye (session acoustique) Sorry for my bad englsh ! ;)

What is great with Balavoine is that even with all the lows and highs and strenghts that this song is asking, he still keeps a fragile "human quality" in his voice.
exactly
Michel Berger wrote this song especially for him, with his fabulous voice able to singing on 2.5 octaves.
Daniel was a good man. Thank you Dereck.
Goosebumps for three minutes ✨🤩 Daniel Balavoine was a great man and a prodigious singer💕
Too young to die !
@@pascalmarfaing1690 by doing a good deed ...😓💔

*possibly always cry 😂😂😭😭😭😭

Why not ? Sting has recorded this classic song. And Johnny too !
@@pascalmarfaing1690 Johnny who ?

Sting

Derreck, you know more about French pop culture than a lot of french native of your age.
Now you have a big community in France who loves you. 👍
At least thank you for spreading bits of French culture in the “New World”.
How great Dimash voice is, I still love Daniel Balavoine version better. This song is about a man who is about to commit suicide, you can really feel pain in Daniel's, not in Dimash's. Thank you Deteck.
indeed, dimash is technic thats all :) but great technic
I totally disagree, i can feel the emotion just the same..if not more. In the first verse this guy is all over the place pitch wise. So its all perception
For me the best version is from gregory lemarchal
Starmania is full of great songs ! It's a must !

Definitely the best cover in English !
This is incredible , merci Dereck ❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭😭😭 Have you heard Gregory Lemarchal do this version years later ?
If I remember well, in that part of the opera-rock, his girlfriend was just assassinated, he explains he was never meant for this world, he doesn't feel at ease here, he didn't get lucky in the "world's lottery". He just wants to escape (like a bird/ talk of metamorphosis), doesn't want to accept the routine (work sleep, repeat).
The part you don't get:
I never had my feet on the ground/
I would rather be a bird/
I don't feel comfortable in my own skin/
I would like to see the world upside down/
What if it was more beautiful/
more beautiful seen from above/

The most beautiful and powerful song From Starmania : "Le blues du businessman"
Advice from a French guy ;)
Omg they’re all so beautiful and powerful, I love Starmania and have always have ❤️❤️❤️ the one I’ve related most with, throughout my life, is « complainte d’une serveuse automate »
My favourite is “Le monde est stone” 👌
YES OMG YES. So underrated yet it's clearly one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard
All the songs from starmania are masterpieces, all!
Emotion. Perfection. This is a voice. This is real music. And that's why I only listen listen to music from the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Yes! Me too especially 80's and 90's. Before it's dead. It's old fashioned!
@@jevousemmerdetouslesthunde2391 I hope he won't be sidetracked into doing all SOS covers and Star Academy/The Voice renditions, and instead continues react to other great songs from that time period.

@@whitedoveblackclouds7243 Yes, I hope so! I like this last album "Sauver L'Amour" and all these songs released in singles.

Cindy Lauper has a beautiful voice . She is 100% les années 80.
Luc Plamondon is not to be left aside in the creation of these musicals.
@@oldmanfrank2517 absolutely 😜
If you listen Daniel Balavoine’s song more often, you will love him more and more, but I promise you, you will be able to do it with your mouth closed. 😉😉
You definitely should react to the Gregory Lemarchal version.
Considering the fate of Gregory, I would quote Ashildr and the Doctor:
- I’ve been watching the stars die and it was beautiful.
Johnny HALLYDAY also has countless hit songs but he relied on talented composers rather than composing himself
the song was composed and writen for Starmania
@@angelus77300 yeah I know, but if I'm not mistaken, Michel Berger already had Balavoine in mind when he composed this song

Now you listen to Daniel Balavoine and this guy in a recent guy, you HAVE TO listen to Gregory Lemar Hal singing this song.
When you discover his profile, you will know what is emotion too with him
i cry on this music
Many emotions
Il nous manque. Dereck Starmania was written by Luc Plamandon and Michel Berger, France Gall's husband. You shoult also listen to "Evidemment" by France Gall, very emotional song written after Daniel's death.
Luc Plamadon writes really good lyrics in Starmania AND Notre-Dame de Paris.

@Monsieur Le Porc Et tu rentres à midi !
I was lucky enough to see the 3rd rendition of it (1994 I think?) at the Mogador theatre, probably why I love this version equally with the original one :)
To add a bit background information for @DereckReacts and the people not familiar with the musical, Starmania was adapted in English under the title "Tycoon" and this specific song, under the title "Only the very best".
You’re welcome (about the translation)

for me, it's the most beautiful version because you feel all the emotion and the depth of this eternal song.
daniel balavoine sang it long before this performance (1985) and he sang it even better in my opinion and went up a lot more in the treble, but I believe that unfortunately this version cannot be found. the 1979 version is just amazing!
OMG You HAVE to react to te cover with Gregory Lemarchal :) He had a so beautiful voice and he was so perfect for this song like Balavoine

J'adore cette musique !!
This song still makes me emotional after all those years ! A perfect song for Balavoine’s voice ! All the songs of « starmania » are masterpieces !
You must listen Grégory Lemarchal version too ! Amazing !! 😍😍😍
If you like D. Balavoine's voice, watch Michel Polnareff on the title Holidays. The music and the voice are exceptional. A very great French singer.
Dereck, you absolutely have to read a translation of the lyrics while listening : it'll break your heart for sure ! This is all talking about love of humanity. As a french born in the 70s, I growed up listening to Balavoine at the radio and TV, before his tragic death in 1986. :'(
That's what I was waiting for ! Tanks !
So beautiful song
you are totally right about the fact that this song was written for him. The composer Michel Berger was friends with Daniel Balavoine and wrote the song specificaly for his range of voice. Nobody nailed that song like him for that reason ;)
The version in english by Peter Kingsberry is amazing too ! This song is incredible when performed by great artists.😉
Best version of this song, and because this song was written for Balavoine
J'adore Balavoine, c'était vraiment un excellent chanteur 💟
I was expecting to this for so long! Beautiful song and beautiful version! It gives me goose bump!
The version of Gregory Lemarchal is also beatiful, specially knowing his story!
Annwwww, Daniel Balavoine is my favorite singer!!
