What we don't realize is that Gregory had to have so much medical help in order to keep his voice and be able to hit all those difficult notes. So very sad - since his passing his parents have relentlessly worked in an association they created in order to gain money for other people to be treated and find lung donors. What a marvellous family.
When he sang this, he was competing in Star Academy France, which he finally won, and was already sick but nobody was aware. He was suffering from cystic fibrosis, which was reducing his lung capacity by something like 50%, could you believe it?
He was always smiling and giving his best. After Star Ac he released his album which was a huge success and had big fully crowded concerts. Again nobody could tell he was in fact dying. Then he passed away within the next 2 years and France discovered the truth, we were all shocked. He is remembered as a kind of singing angel.
You summed It up so well 🙏🏼 he was such a wonderful and humble boy, thanks to his life, France has a great awareness about this disease, which is so important. It was such a shock when he died, and he stays in the hearts of all French people 💕
Everybody was aware that he was sick. They said it on the first show.
They said it in the first épisode of Star Academy 4, and even if they never talk about that after the 1rst episode it was obvious he was sick.
And the press talk about it à lot, and it was far from being nice.
Dear Eric, I have dedicated the rest of my life to learning this wonderful song because I love Gregory's voice and his heartwarming rendition. Thank you for sharring this information with us. I was not aware that he was dying as he seemed so alive with passion. May he forever rest in eternal peace.
I didn't know he was dying but i could tell he sounded tired and ill when he sang and he's the first cover i listened to. He still gave an amazing performance though and it was really emotional. May he rest in peace.

Just heartbreaking that this beautiful soul died so young. He sings like an angel!
It's hard to imagine that he had hours of breathing exercises before or after his performances so he could sing. Hard to imagine someone who struggled to breath sometimes can sing like this. He was a warrior, and I guess a dreamer too. I'm not going to compare it with Dimash's performance. Dimash is a bit out of this world. But Gregory's version will always be closest in my heart because this little guy embodies the story of that song. It's his story, to me. That is what makes it so special. So touching. Gregory was touching, so sweet, but so funny. Always joking around. He never put his disease forwards, although he had to fight really hard each day for it not to get in the way of his dreams, or even of his every day life. So yeah, he could've lived a few more years without the intense rhythm of touring and recording that followed his victory, but that was his life, his dream, and he was so happy, fulfilled. And yeah, it really sucks we didn't get more of him. He was an Angel. 15 years later, and I still cry whenever I listen to him, especially that song. When I hear Dimash's version (which in itself can make you cry), I cry too but because I link it to Gregory mostly.

Imagine how hard it was for him to sing because of the disease. That sort of disease makes it very hard to breath. He was exhausted after each song. But look at him: you see nothing about the disease while he's singing.

It's like this song was written for Gregory. It tells his story.
You have to understand that with the disease he had, it would normally be impossible to sing at that level.
I like to look at that performance from time to time to remind myself how wonderful and exceptionnal he truly was.
I remember the day he died, it was all over the news and I felt very sad. It was really great to follow him every week on Star Academy. Yes we all knew he was sick from the beginning, he obviously knew he was sick and that his lifespan would be shorter than most but he never showed it and didn't speak about it a lot. He didn't want pity, he wanted to live fully and not be treated as a sick kid. He had that spirit about him, never gave up, always smiling and willing to give his best.
That was the best season of Star Academy by far just because of him and he is still adored to this day.
That performance specifically was very emotional and deep, the song looked like it was written for him "pourquoi je vis, pourquoi je meurs "(why do I live, why do I die)", "je sens quelque chose qui m'attire vers le haut " (I feel something pulling me from up above), "je suis mal dans ma peau" (I'm uncomfortable in my skin).
I remember watching it on television and it was.... magical, everybody was sp quiet because we were so deeply moved and captivated.

N in France we r calling him "little angel" nickname since Star Academy. And stay after his his death. N we called him Like that because when he sang he was a little angel. Thanks a lot for him. It's been almost 17 years since he passed away but I still miss him a lot. That performance is very important to me. Thanks to it, I sang that song on stage (I was 14 then, I couldn't anymore now that I am almost 33). When I listen to him singing it, I have chills and I almost feel like crying. It's my 3rd favorite song but it might be the most important in my life.
He was almost 24 when he died; what a waste to lose someone so great and talented so early.

Died too young. He was sick, cystic fibrosis. He was waiting for a lung transplant, but unfortunately he didn't make it. He had at least lived his dream for a little while. His voice was beautiful and him singing this song is even more touching, knowing his sickness and his fate :( May he rest in peace.

Knowing that he was incredibly ill makes that song even more sad.
He texted his friends the day of his death "Everything is fine, I'm about to be transplanted today", in the evening he was found dead.
When this performance aired, I was in my twenties and I actually feel very honored to have been able to witness it. It was absolutely incredible. I was very sad when he passed away, I think the whole country was. He showed us to believe in our dreams despite the highest obstacles, he was a real example of strength and humility. Whenever I hear one of his songs on the radio, I feel a great pinch in my heart. He was truly an angel.

Merci pour votre témoignage. Grégory était atteint de la "mucoviscidose". ; une maladie qui affecte les poumons et les intestins. Sa voix sublime, touchante et bouleversante, relève du divin. C'était un jeune homme avec un cœur pur. Ses parents ont créé la fondation Grégory Lemarchal pour venir en aide aux malades, et sa sœur Leslie, a oeuvré à l'écriture d'un livre sur son très cher frère. Bonjour à tous. La version de Grégory est ma préférée. Certes Dimash réalise des prouesses vocales mais au détriment des paroles, qui sont très importantes pour une audience française. Gregory avait 20 ans lors de sa performance. Ceux qui l'ont aimé alors se souviennent toujours de lui

Si jamais tu continue de réagir à des chansons françaises, j'aimerais bien te voir réagir à un autre chanteur très connu, et très provocateur : Serge Gainsbourg. Il a écrit des chansons pour de très belles femmes, comme Brigitte Bardot par exemple. Des chansons jugées "scandaleuses", comme sa très célèbre chanson : "Je t'aime moi non plus", chantée d'abord par Brigitte bardot (interdite dans de nombreux pays à cause du scandale) et ensuite par la très charmante Jane Birkin.

unlike eric's comment, they had more or less talked about it at the end of the star accademy. only we did not believe it. how could a person with muccovissidosis sing so well without stopping during a song? worse I thought they were doing too much for him to win, they want to give him an advantage when he doesn't need it ect. then 2 years later we announced his death and the stupor ... it was therefore true.

Great performance and a wonderful song. There is also a wonderful version of this song by Giulia Falcone a young Italian talent (16)and her cover has reached over 1 million views by now. Quite different interpretation of her I can recommend so if you want to have a look feel free to check it out.
she did also another song of Grégory recently, "ecris l'histoire" very beautiful too, so she might have referred more to his version rather than Dimashes Version( which is excellent indeedas well)

if he had not been sick he could have really done some exceptionnal because one can hear he gets short of breath,but he managed really great . He went to Kazakstan and Dimash heard him sing this song and decided to learn it.

The song is composed in two and a half octaves to fully exploit the singer Daniel Balavoine's rare 2.1/2 octave range. Although frankly I didn't like the latter's voice (rest his soul) which was too mewling for me.
