While watching this morning’s vlog, I imagined the substantial amount of time and labor you dedicate to producing these relatively brief videos. I’m always impressed with your images and the incredibly useful information you share but today I was especially struck by the behind the scenes effort you apply to your work. It’s little wonder you achieve such spectacular results.
It is awesome that you can articulate what you see and do so well. You are a very gifted photographer and teacher. Please know that you are appreciated.
Press play x2 today. Your drone photography is always just so stunning. Each photoshoot is a capture of something in a moment in time, never to be replicated the exact same way twice. I think I'd like to see you do a Landscape Documentary one day of something meaningful.
I especially love the silver birch photo. Very soft and dreamy. Thank you again for reminding me that the most important thing of all is just to get out.
I follow several other photographers on TH-cam. They are pretty good. However, your channel is my number one! I’m always left inspired to go out and take pictures! Your passion to landscape photography is contagious! Love your work!
That's so true, Nigel. I always find it amusing when people say to me, "oh, you're so lucky to get that shot". Although luck does play a part, I find that the more I learn and practice and get up before sunrise to get out with my camera, the "luckier" I get :-) Beautiful photographs, Nigel. You continue to be an inspiration.
Philip T When I sell my prints my friends are taken back by the price I set. They don't seem to understand how much has gone into that one photo. I think I'll start taking them on trips with me. 🐼✌️🧟♂️
Another lovely vlog to wake up to on a Sunday morning. Thank you Nigel. Picking up on what you said about persevering, and eventually succeeding, reminds me of a South African golfing champion, Gary Player, who when asked the secret of his success replied, “The harder you try, the luckier you get”. I know the reason my photography progresses so slowly is because I don’t get out enough with my camera. To be in ‘the zone’ I find it best to do it alone or with a fellow photographer friend and that is my problem. Then of course is the time spent in Lightroom at home. Combined, the whole process is quite time consuming and difficult to plan into an otherwise busy life. When I have done it though I’ve had a great day out in the fresh air and got a couple of keepers which I’ve printed. (Had printed). Researching areas by drone sounds a great idea. Thanks for your vlogs, and for the information you so readily give up. Cheers.
Just got back from first visit to Lake District. Most beautiful place I have ever been. Need to return for extended stay! Love uour valley shot; I may have gottenn one similar
I loved the sound of the rain and of the flowing streams and rivers in this video. Very relaxing. I like both photos you showed - love the valley shot. One thing, it seems like when you're back in your studio and you are doing the top down shot of the photos you took, every time you move your hands/arms, the table and camera shake. You might want to take a look into that to see if you can get that more stable.
Great to see you walking through the woods again, and the results what you get out of it. 👍. I've enjoyed it very much! And you've so right. I have to go out more often. 🙏
Thanks for the encouragement. It rains here in Pennsylvania a lot. Your statement about going back to the same places is so true. Suddenly pictures pop up that you don't expect, and never saw before. By the way, Your beard looks good the longer it grows.
I would like to say thanks for all that you do, I am just getting into photography and bought my first camera (canon EOS M-100 ) I am just starting to learn how to use the manual settings so I will keep watching and learning.
I like the drone footage in your videos, so much so it’s got me thinking about buying one. Could I put that forward as a photography toolkit suggestion. Love the valleys shot!
Hey 👋 Nigel , I like the horizontal shot of the woodland because it seems to give more balance to the overall scene vs the vertical. Do you agree? I like when you give explanation of why you setup the shot of the scene ;ie composition exposure etc ....Thanks!!!
I really enjoyed the horizontal woodland image. I usually stick to vertical when in woodland because I struggle finding a scene wide enough for a horizontal without it being a complete mess. Cheers
Great inspiring video Nigel! Going out on a rainy day and put me in a location to capture the best possible composition is one of the best “Photography-lessons-learned”.
we call those Birch trees in theRockies Quakies, and even here in Calif there are some but nothing like the Rockies, my favorite tree ever and i spent tons of time in the Quakies (Quaking Aspen)in the past, when they change color it is really something
One of my favorite videos you've done so far! Great photos in spite of all the rain! I've been so annoyed with all the rain we've been getting around here lately and now I regret not getting out there anyway. When the Mother Nature gives you lemons, get out and turn them into spectacular photos like Nigel!! :)
Good message with some nifty drone work. Actually, I thought the stream shot just before you returned to the studio was quite nice. Pebbles would have loved all those puddles. Rock on!
Right on Nigel,in order to improve and possibly catch something amazing on camera you have to get outside, sitting on the couch picturing yourself someplace is just not quite good enough.I just came back from a beautiful morning hike with sunrise here in Alberta,Canada.....like Nike says, Just do it!:)
The woodland photo is outstanding. To me, it looks like a painting. A painter couldn't have gotten a better composition, you worked that one perfectly. Keep up the wonderful work.
NIce shots! Really liked how you went out in bad weather and got this kind of shots. Shows that you can always get nice photographs if you're talented. Inspiring!
Love the silver birch photo and the valley photo! Very beautiful! I know I am guilty of not going out in the rain.. It really has been pooring here.. The thing with the rain is, I'm always afraid that it will damage my camera or lens somehow, even though I have a rain sleeve for it..
Great photos Nigel, love the diagonals in the valley weaving left and right... Missed a really nice sunset the other evening as I was working driving away from it. But it looked impressive in the rear view mirror. Red skies silhouetting city traffic with their headlights on.
I always enjoy your videos, Nigel. This was inspirational and your images are great. I especially like the first two woodland images. They look very pastel and painterly.
I love the valley shot a lot. As for the birches, I'll check the vertical image on IG. The horizontal you show here is nice, but it seems a bit crowded on the left margin by that group of trees. I bet a pano in 16x9 format would have been really interesting.
I'd really appreciate a video on how you edited that woodland scene to show us how you brought out the lighting and highlights from the original image. The difference between what we saw on video while you were there in the rain and the finished photo is amazing. The lighting and colors really brought out that image. I sure I'm passing up some good images because I don't or can't see the final image in my head. Any help in that area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Nigel.
I wonder if you have any insight into a technical question. I know you are always very thoughtful and offer intelligent insights to various aspects of photography so thought you best placed to answer. Of course when there is too much white or black in the scene, the camera guesses the light and compensates accordingly (to 18% grey). Often it is incorrect, so the photographer needs to correct again or use manual. My question is not to do with light, but colours. So, for example, if the scene has too much blue, or too much red, does the camera compensate this also? Does it compensate colours or does it do it with Kelvin on the white balance only? Or does the sensor have colour correction, white balance correction AND light correction functionality, i.e. all three? Assuming the answer is yes, the sensor does colour correct. How do you as a photographer compensate agains the camera making incorrect colour assumptions? I ask this because I regularly shoot beach scenes and they are always wrongly colour cast and even in Lightroom, I can never seem to get it right. Equally, in an evening lit scene, the colours are never quite right, even though I mess around with image in Lightroom. I hope this question makes sense.
Was good to hear practice shining through...you have a here and now shot that many of us would just click away at, but your experience gave you enough time within the few minutes window to think about content, knowing what to exclude. One thing I’ve noticed in a couple of videos...do you use a remote release or timer to fire the shutter? Or is your tripod sturdy enough to make an instant shutter press?
It looked wet! Hard work and maybe frustrating finding something but a really polished output! Excellent video and the review at the end really worked well... as always an inspiration, thanks Nigel
Nigel, enjoyed this video perhaps the most of all of yours I’ve watched. Ironically I was up and out this morning in the woodlands an hour and a half before sunrise. Came back and watched this. Thanks for all the work you put into these. Btw what size paper were your prints today?
Gosh if I ever get to come back to England I'll have to go to the Lake District..It is so beautiful. Very well done video Nigel! Love your lessons..and photography. I am a new follower, but I really look forward to seeing your work and videos. I also enjoy you selection of piano music.. Thanks so much for your generous teaching and sharing. Take care.
Love this video Nigel at a number of different levels. After listening to your comments about the woodland shot, I couldn't help remembering what my painting instructor said about triangles and their ability to define composition (the woodland image surely did that); it is one of the best image I seen you do in a long time - very nicely done.
Nigel hi, really enjoy your vlogs and your Images are superb , i love the " soft look" of your woodland Image , probably not a good way to explain it but best i can do, love it.
I envy the weather in England, specially gorgeous for photography. Here, in the north of Spain (Bilbao), it rains less and less every year. It used to but it has been changing since the last decade. Seeing the rivers is sooooo sad right now 😔 Regards
Hi Nige, great image of the valley matey, wonderful light. Loved the image of the river & tree, surprised it wasn’t in your end picks!? Keep well mate, I’m getting a little concerned at what I’m seeing! 😑 Dazza. 🇬🇧
Absolutely fantastic drone footage and the woodland photo is beautiful. I was was wondering if you use a Lav mic for your videos and if so is it plugged directly into the camera or a recorder? 🐼✌️🧟♂️
Amazing photos and the drone is just killing me!! So nice. It seems that I have already done this tip 😅 I was today out because of an amazing foggy morning ♥️✌️
Thanks for this great vid, it's been really inspirational! The fact is, sometimes one as a photographer, has the right gear, but we might feel so sluggish to actually go out and "make it happen", photographically speaking. By the way, what gear do you use for the video shoot? The image is super crisp and the colors are gorgeous.
Like you said Nigel. If you’re not out there on location, no matter how lucky you think you are, you won’t get a shot. Luck only plays a part if you make the effort to be there..... Derek.

Ron Stufflet I agree. I do photo and video for my new channel and it's very difficult to balance. If I had to throw in a drone. I'd be lost.🐼✌️🧟♂️
i guess it is pretty off topic but do anybody know a good website to stream newly released series online?
@Johnathan Ronnie i watch on flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Vihaan Jaxxon definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone for years myself :)
@Vihaan Jaxxon Thank you, I signed up and it seems to work :D I appreciate it!!
It is awesome that you can articulate what you see and do so well. You are a very gifted photographer and teacher. Please know that you are appreciated.
The shot of the zig-zagging hills with those brilliant textures is just pure fantasy. Jackpot!
Press play x2 today. Your drone photography is always just so stunning. Each photoshoot is a capture of something in a moment in time, never to be replicated the exact same way twice. I think I'd like to see you do a Landscape Documentary one day of something meaningful.

Thanks - I appreciate that
Philip T "The more I practice, the luckier I get." - Gary Player, golf great
Thanks Nigel...you didn’t leave me any excuses for not getting out. Lovely images, the light in the valley is just wonderful.
Great images Nigel and the drone footage really complimented the storytelling extremely well. Particularly loved the valley shot 👍
scotty4418 Yes! That drone footage was the best.🐼👍🏽🧟♂️
Love the valley shot. Light is really nice and highlights the valley

Amazing photos. Your videos are perfect for getting inspired. Thanks.
5:50 woodland photo - perfection. Love the composition, the balance, the depth.
vargavideo Its definitely takes you into the story of the photo. 🐼✌️🧟♂️
A really enjoyable walk through a very wet Lake District. I love the images you captured. Great work.
Loved every minute and your thought process. Thank you for sharing.
The valley photo is simply amazing......you nailed it!

Nigel, your energy and enthusiasm is infectious! I always enjoy and learn from your videos! Thank you!
A very timely video Nigel as next week I will be shooting in North Wales and anticipate rain. Time to head for the woods!
Absolutely love the yellow valley image, thanks Nigel.
Great to see you walking through the woods again, and the results what you get out of it. 👍. I've enjoyed it very much!
And you've so right. I have to go out more often. 🙏
As soon as fall settles in here, I will use your teachings for my photos. Thank you for your time and effort into these lessons!
I had probably passed that place with the trees in the first printed photo ten of ten times. That is why you should not rush when out. Great photo.
Thanks for the encouragement. It rains here in Pennsylvania a lot. Your statement about going back to the same places is so true. Suddenly pictures pop up that you don't expect, and never saw before. By the way, Your beard looks good the longer it grows.
The shot at 5:50 is amazing. Well done, Nigel!
The silver birch photo is very nice, painterly in my opinion.
Ahh nothing like wearing over trousers and being sodden int Lakes. It’s the real thing.
Small shadow of the closest tree added more punch...nice composition as usual.
I would like to say thanks for all that you do, I am just getting into photography and bought my first camera (canon EOS M-100 ) I am just starting to learn how to use the manual settings so I will keep watching and learning.

I though the same too! Then looked in the bank haha

The valley shot is stunning!!
I swear that the still at 5:50 is a painting, absolutely astounding photo!!!!
Thanks so much
Love the softness of those trees with ferns !!
Thanks great suggestion to get out and shoot!
I really enjoyed the horizontal woodland image. I usually stick to vertical when in woodland because I struggle finding a scene wide enough for a horizontal without it being a complete mess. Cheers

Stunning stunning photos Nigel😍
That dolly zoom drone clip at 6:53 is nuts! So so good. I love the shot it set up too, I'm always drawn to the telephoto end of landscape.
Thanks a pleased you noticed 👍
Good message with some nifty drone work. Actually, I thought the stream shot just before you returned to the studio was quite nice. Pebbles would have loved all those puddles. Rock on!
tjsinva Yes, I agree as well! That tree looks awesomely knarly!👍
Great video. You could’ve easily called it a day but you ploughed on and that valley shot in particular is awesome.
Thanks Terry - appreciate that

I’m up there for 3 days next week and I hope the rain have subsided 😬 thanks for sharing 👍🏻
The woodland photo is outstanding. To me, it looks like a painting. A painter couldn't have gotten a better composition, you worked that one perfectly. Keep up the wonderful work.
Thanks a lot David

Excellent! That mirrors my experience in the Lakes last week. Rain most of Tuesday but a great opportunity foir photos.
Great photos Nigel, love the diagonals in the valley weaving left and right...
Missed a really nice sunset the other evening as I was working driving away from it. But it looked impressive in the rear view mirror. Red skies silhouetting city traffic with their headlights on.
Weather in the Lakes - if you can see Scafell it's about to rain, if you can't see Scafell it is raining! :D
We were just there two weeks ago, also hiking for a week in lots of rain. Wish I saw your video before we went 😆
Great vid. The image of the valley is lovely.
I always enjoy your videos, Nigel. This was inspirational and your images are great. I especially like the first two woodland images. They look very pastel and painterly.
Nice work Nigel hope you are well as you looked really tired.
Completely fine - thanks for the concern

That woodland shot looks great printed!!
Hopefully the weather gods will be more forgiving, when i'm in the Lake District in 3 weeks time!!
Love the valley shot: perfection in shapes and colors. Am headed from US to Lake District this week and forecast is all rain all the time. Squish.
It always rains in the Lake District - that is good news!!!
As always, inspiring stuff here Nige ! Cheers.
That unplanned shot was absolutely phenomenal. Weird how it usually works out that those are the best ones.
Thata must be a very difficult video to produce. Well done Nigel! Always love and appreciate your efforts you put on these videos!

As long as shooting in raw you can always adjust colour as it is just the raw data. In terms of exposure - just use histogram and not metering. 👍

Hi Nigel ,
What do you call the gear that protects you from your feet up to your waist . Here in the US thy are called waders or hip boots . Thanks!
Waders 👍
Thank’s Nigel

Wow the image of the birches is flippin gorgeous 👍🏻 don’t know how you do it, man.
stunning shots my friend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep well mate, I’m getting a little concerned at what I’m seeing! 😑
Dazza. 🇬🇧
Why did you use your polarizer? Would the rain have made a ton of relfections?
It does yes. The water surface is much more reflective than the dry leave.
Love the images. Horizontal one for me... Peace.
Another great inspirational video. How does the drone cope with the rain or damp weather?
Great photos!
Have you been over Hardknott and seen the view over Eskdale and the estuary at Ravenglas ?
Good vlog Nigel thnx
Hi Nigel, I love your videos. I was wondering what type of drone you use?
DJI mavic 2 pro 👍
Awesome! I just bought one and can’t wait to try it out.
Very good again, danke.
The drone footage at 7:05 looks fantastic! Try to get a still out of it.
Great info impressive photos very inspirational,I just have to make the effort....😊👍🏻
Fabulous Valley shot. Do you ever capture stills on your drone?
Thanks. Yes - all the time... I have done a few videos on it
Any tips on waterproof or resistant cameras? Pentax K-3 Any Good?
Xt3 or Nikon or song
Thanks for this great vid, it's been really inspirational! Is SONY A7III good enough for landscape photography ?
Yes
7:20 great Image
Like you said Nigel. If you’re not out there on location, no matter how lucky you think you are, you won’t get a shot. Luck only plays a part if you make the effort to be there..... Derek.
