Architecture student from Northern Europe here:) Just wanted to give a little information about European architecture, at least the northern countries. Depending on what you are building the material varies a lot. So for example in the build/rebuild/renovation of a single family house, wood is one of the most commonly used materials. Renovations on solid brick houses are often done in brick, but as brick has become a building material kind of belonging to the last centuries it is not used in solid construction(new build) anymore(regulations, which are often not really logical, but I guess everyone who has tried to build something has experienced that kind of, have made solid brick construction basically impossible), though still used for facades. If a building firm builds the building, or the building is generally bigger the most common material is sadly concrete. This takes a big toll on the environment but is at the moment the cheapest and most readily available material for bigger scale construction. Wood is expensive compared to concrete, especially in the last few years the prices have gone up quite a bit. We use more wood than we are regrowing so that makes it a limited resource. A very common style of house, in the region I grew up in are half timbered houses, which have timber framed walls, filled with different materials, so this could be brick for example. I am doing my masters in material studies so we are basically looking at what we can use if we don’t use the typical materials, or limit their use to the minimum amount possible, and substitute as much as possible with sustainable materials. I tried to keep it short, and have therefore had to generalise a bit, so pls don’t come for me. Hope this can at least start to help those who are interested:)
Cool Masters thesis subject. I'm not in the industry - my job is in IT - but I've always liked to learn about the building industry and associated skilled trades. The focus of your Masters is incredibly timely and I hope your work on it is going well. I'll need to dig around to see what's new in alternative/renewable building materials. I've read articles over the years on using things like hay bales, recycled glass, etc, but those are very limited scale materials.
I am from Germany, we bought a house build in 1969/1970 with bricks. We did change the floor plan a little but it was done by a company. The rebuild of one wall and the close-up of one door frame was done by some kind of big man-made bricks. Also: you really have to think about ripping out walls, because there are some walls that hold up the next floor or even the roof. So at least for old brick houses you can not change the floor plan without a big mess, special tools, special trash bins and at least a construction consultant.
Southern England here. Its breeze block for internal walls here. Brick on the outside skin. Breeze blocks are larger, lighter and crumbly! Sometimes when you drill into the wall to hang a shelf you have lots of black dust shoot back out. The insulation could have been anything to be honest. I think that is why we are experiencing a big issue in the uk of mould resurgence. Our homes have lost or have degraded cavity foam insulation, windows that have change shape and shrunk against the brick... causing lots and lots of issues now home have central heating rather than open fires.
Nice answer, I'm a Brit living in Finland and built my house 12 years ago. Thermal heating , quadrupedal glazing, timber upstairs on a breeze block basement . Insulation is around 30cm in the walls and near on a meter in the roof. But the air flow around the upper part was something I found interesting so there is a gap between the outer and inner surfaces or the exterior. There is lots of precaution to stop the cold extreme weather and the indoor heat mixing as that normally results in mold . OK I'm a little lost with it as quite a lot different to the old Victorian house I grew up in but very happy with it. Certainly I value Finnish standards over British for housing....don't get me started about bathrooms :)

Agreed. Congrats on 53 years! May you have many more happy years together! My husband and I have got 18 years married and we’re pretty strong. We just got through a bathroom addition and laundry renovation, along with replacement of our windows with double glazing, all done by contractors and we did it without a cross word but I wouldn’t jinx it by working together on anything. I’m the handy person and my husband knows to just leave me to it. These guys work together beautifully, while working together beautifully 😜
I noticed they communicate a ton when they work together. They give instructions constantly, and are always praising each other as well. But they are really good communicators.

Oh, i wanted to tell you something cool. (this isnt the cool part) I am a tad underhoused, so to speak, and live in my workplace. It has no shower or kitchen and so I have to go to the local high school to shower and the organization that arranges the use of the showers at the school (this is the cool part) must be a partner with the Bombas sock folks because I have been receiving a wonderful pair of warm socks every time I go there to shower. It is a comforting feeling to receive such a great gift. Like mom got me something nice to wear or something like that... Thanks Jenna and thanks Bombas!!!

i hope you are able to be housed soon! we got housing in January 2023. the recovery process is long and slow but it sounds like you have some people/organizations looking out for you.

lol as a Brazilian (houses are made of concrete and bricks here) it’s sooooo funny to me hearing you guys talk about brick houses. Cause the thought of living in a house entirely made of wood gives me anxiety and I can never understand why wood would be better in any scenario (and I’m a civil engineer)

@dagooglenet No problem heating that brick house at -20°C or less. Our houses usually have a very good insulation and hold the temperature well in summer and also winter.
I'm so freaking impressed with you two putting those up on your own, holy cow. And not to be weird but I am positively *yearning* for the ultimate footage of you two in front of that fireplace, wearing your bombas and under some blankies with some tea, doing 100% nothing while rain happens OUTSIDE the house for a change. French architect here : we do have wood buildings, except we have some parts in concrete mixed in for stability and water resistance (usually the bottom floor and a couple walls). The interior walls, not structural, are plaster boards screwed on aluminium structures (never wood). It’s very interesting to see how it’s done in other countries ! I actually learn a lot and I can use it to improve my practice. :) Thank you, and the best of luck to you !!
Not all Europeans are confused. In Sweden we use wood, and probably in Finland and Norway too. We have a lot of forests... It all depends on where in Europe you are, what the climate is like etc. We are not all the same.
can confirm it's normal in Norway as well. Honestly it's very weird not to have a wood house here, not unheard of, but very unusual. Pretty sure that goes for most countries with lots of forests.
Yeah strangely enough it's people from Europe (often central parts of Europe) that make those comments, you'd think they would know better, that everything in Europe is not the same as their neighbourhood in their town, in their European country.
In the last two decades wood frame houses have become more popular, still a lot of house are brick built too. Considering the amount of rain and damp we have in Ireland though, you cannot blame us for sticking to brick.

Nick, everyone can’t build. It takes practice and real work. You are doing a great job. There was a time when I could not build anything, but I learned and have built and rebuilt many homes. I am still ALWAYS learning. Keep up the great work.
Nick, I am no expert, but my ex husband was a licensed contractor. We built our dream home in 1982 to 1984. We worked together to build it. I think you are doing a fantastic job. I also was a district manager for a build on your lot builder. You both amaze me! Keep the fun going. I love watch every video!

Um you need to do a couples relationship book next. My hub and I 21yrs in still niggle even at painting or DIY. My attitude has now changed. You two did that in that weather... I have tremendous respect for the two of you. I started renovating houses with my dad when I was 12 and have continued on with my husband into my almost 70's. Because of this I have a really clear reallity picture of what you both are doing. You do it with grace, respect and humour (and off camera there probably times when teeth grinding goes on) with each other. Bravo, the end game is going to be absolutely spectacular. My house in South Australia was built in 1937 and is solid brick and sandstone. When I say solid brick it has two brick walls with an air gap between them. It still has all its original features including some wonderful ceilings and solid jarra floors. As well as a huge mirror above the fireplace. The only thing that we have done is the electric wiring needed replacing and the plumbing. But it is still standing after nearly 90 years.
I just admire how you two have taken on this huge project with such positivity! Also, dig that cool house in the background! That whole neighborhood must be kickin’ ❤

Fun fact: we use wood for our roofs in Europe, too. Peace ✌️
and for walls concrete or wood. Some have bricks but that's mostly for the outer wall not the inner wall. If you want to change the floor plan you need to replace it metal beam or a pillar (if its load bearing), but that's mostly the same for all materials. The only thing that changes there is the amount of time and tools needed to break out the wall.
And we use moisture barrier materials too because lots of Europe is damp and cold. Also my last house was older than either the Irish state, or the United Kingdom.
I love this series so much. To know that it could come to an end is a bitter-sweet feeling, but obviously I want you two to finish the house. You deserve it. So wholesome.

Super random but tricks I used as a field geologist to keep your hands warm is 1. (Cold dry days) Use a hair band to secure a HotHand to the top of your wrist under your gloves to super heat blood into your fingers. 2. (Cold wet days) layer thin runner gloves, nitrile disposable gloves, utility gloves so your hands stay dry for work breaks. Keep up the amazing work y’all!

Im from Switzerland and was growing up in a almost 300 years old Farmhous. its build with woodframes of solid wood and filled with diffrent materials. the outside is shingled and my dad rebuild all in 1986. on the upper floor he remove all walls and rebuild it with his plans, but on the basement he has to watch out to let stand the walls who are holding the whole hous. Today i live in a apartment out of concreed, missing our old farmhous....

In western and southern Europe the trees are longer to grow and fewer in numbers, so wood is used only for roofs and floors, the parts that work in flexion. All the compression parts and made with stones, bricks or concrete because it is local, our workers are skilled in that, fits the climate but most of all cheaper!
I don’t see why. In our house we broke the walls through to connect 3 rooms into one big one. With the right tools no problem, you just have a ton of dirt and it may take a bit longer. It’s really difficult to find affordable housing so I would always prefer to adjust my own home to my liking and style.
Love your videos!! Just a tip from someone who worked outdoors for a decade... wear nitrile gloves under your work gloves in the cold. It'll keep them from getting as cold and dry!!

Hi from Portugal! Jenna was saying our brick houses can't be cost efficient but we don't need a heating system for instance. If the house was well constructed we don't need insulation like you do ( so we don't need the space for it in our walls). So, long term speaking, it's more expensive at the construction fase but most of us don't spend on heating. Also, we can't change our floor plans without special permisses and licenses from the city witch are usually too expensive to even dream about. Love you
@@alyp.3909 if good materials were used to build, the house maintains itself cold in summer and warm in winter, yes :) no need for ac or heating. Not everywhere in Portugal tho! I guess in most cities. In rural Portugal you'd better have heating for winter 😀

Norwegian here, our houses are made of wood for the most part so this is all completely normal to me. Europe is a big place with different climates throughout, I'm just as confused as you guys when it comes to brick houses lmao

My husband and I have got 18 years married and we’re pretty strong. We just got through a bathroom addition and laundry renovation, along with replacement of our windows with double glazing, all done by contractors and we did it without a cross word but I wouldn’t jinx it by working together on anything. I’m the handy person and my husband knows to just leave me to it. These guys work together beautifully, while working together beautifully 😜
I noticed they communicate a ton when they work together. They give instructions constantly, and are always praising each other as well. But they are really good communicators.

Oh, i wanted to tell you something cool. (this isnt the cool part) I am a tad underhoused, so to speak, and live in my workplace. It has no shower or kitchen and so I have to go to the local high school to shower and the organization that arranges the use of the showers at the school (this is the cool part) must be a partner with the Bombas sock folks because I have been receiving a wonderful pair of warm socks every time I go there to shower. It is a comforting feeling to receive such a great gift. Like mom got me something nice to wear or something like that... Thanks Jenna and thanks Bombas!!!

i hope you are able to be housed soon! we got housing in January 2023. the recovery process is long and slow but it sounds like you have some people/organizations looking out for you.

@@dianner5148 actually, its not zoned residential and if Im discovered then I risk losing my business. its been a rough ride here in SF area for artists who work full time in their trade but cant afford a workplace as well as a home. all the tech bro's rented all the artist live/work loft spaces or they are $6000 a month and so many of us are just hanging by threads... im a goldsmith for the last 20 years. most of my clients have no clue i shower at the local high school and cannot cook or have guests in my home...
I was born in Vancouver and have lived in the Lower Mainland for almost sixty years. From October through March the rain is cold to the bone and can be a challenge both physically and emotionally. You two are perfect examples of Canadian spirit...tough, resilient and just as important, maintaining your sense of humor and kindness.

lol as a Brazilian (houses are made of concrete and bricks here) it’s sooooo funny to me hearing you guys talk about brick houses. Cause the thought of living in a house entirely made of wood gives me anxiety and I can never understand why wood would be better in any scenario (and I’m a civil engineer)
Try to heat a concrete house in -20C or -30C. Plus wood is cheap and easy to work with. We don't build here houses for the next 500 years.

@dagooglenet No problem heating that brick house at -20°C or less. Our houses usually have a very good insulation and hold the temperature well in summer and also winter.

French architect here : we do have wood buildings, except we have some parts in concrete mixed in for stability and water resistance (usually the bottom floor and a couple walls). The interior walls, not structural, are plaster boards screwed on aluminium structures (never wood).

Not all Europeans are confused. In Sweden we use wood, and probably in Finland and Norway too. We have a lot of forests... It all depends on where in Europe you are, what the climate is like etc. We are not all the same.
can confirm it's normal in Norway as well. Honestly it's very weird not to have a wood house here, not unheard of, but very unusual. Pretty sure that goes for most countries with lots of forests.

Yeah strangely enough it's people from Europe (often central parts of Europe) that make those comments, you'd think they would know better, that everything in Europe is not the same as their neighbourhood in their town, in their European country.
In the last two decades wood frame houses have become more popular, still a lot of house are brick built too. Considering the amount of rain and damp we have in Ireland though, you cannot blame us for sticking to brick.
There is literally nothing more miserable than a cold, wet, rainy dark BC day when you have to work outside. You guys are an inspiration!

Nick, I am no expert, but my ex husband was a licensed contractor. We built our dream home in 1982 to 1984. We worked together to build it. I think you are doing a fantastic job. I also was a district manager for a build on your lot builder. You both amaze me! Keep the fun going. I love watch every video!

I have tremendous respect for the two of you. I started renovating houses with my dad when I was 12 and have continued on with my husband into my almost 70's. Because of this I have a really clear reallity picture of what you both are doing. You do it with grace, respect and humour (and off camera there probably times when teeth grinding goes on) with each other. Bravo, the end game is going to be absolutely spectacular. My house in South Australia was built in 1937 and is solid brick and sandstone. When I say solid brick it has two brick walls with an air gap between them. It still has all its original features including some wonderful ceilings and solid jarra floors. As well as a huge mirror above the fireplace. The only thing that we have done is the electric wiring needed replacing and the plumbing. But it is still standing after nearly 90 years.
I just admire how you two have taken on this huge project with such positivity! Also, dig that cool house in the background! That whole neighborhood must be kickin’ ❤

Fun fact: we use wood for our roofs in Europe, too. Peace ✌️
and for walls concrete or wood. Some have bricks but that's mostly for the outer wall not the inner wall. If you want to change the floor plan you need to replace it metal beam or a pillar (if its load bearing), but that's mostly the same for all materials. The only thing that changes there is the amount of time and tools needed to break out the wall.

Super random but tricks I used as a field geologist to keep your hands warm is 1. (Cold dry days) Use a hair band to secure a HotHand to the top of your wrist under your gloves to super heat blood into your fingers. 2. (Cold wet days) layer thin runner gloves, nitrile disposable gloves, utility gloves so your hands stay dry for work breaks. Keep up the amazing work y’all!

about houses. Im from Switzerland and was growing up in a almost 300 years old Farmhous. its build with woodframes of solid wood and filled with diffrent materials. the outside is shingled and my dad rebuild all in 1986. on the upper floor he remove all walls and rebuild it with his plans, but on the basement he has to watch out to let stand the walls who are holding the whole hous.
Today i live in a apartment out of concreed, missing our old farmhous....

In western and southern Europe the trees are longer to grow and fewer in numbers, so wood is used only for roofs and floors, the parts that work in flexion. All the compression parts and made with stones, bricks or concrete because it is local, our workers are skilled in that, fits the climate but most of all cheaper!

I don’t see why. In our house we broke the walls through to connect 3 rooms into one big one. With the right tools no problem, you just have a ton of dirt and it may take a bit longer. It’s really difficult to find affordable housing so I would always prefer to adjust my own home to my liking and style.

Love your videos!! Just a tip from someone who worked outdoors for a decade... wear nitrile gloves under your work gloves in the cold. It'll keep them from getting as cold and dry!!

Hi from Portugal! Jenna was saying our brick houses can't be cost efficient but we don't need a heating system for instance. If the house was well constructed we don't need insulation like you do ( so we don't need the space for it in our walls). So, long term speaking, it's more expensive at the construction fase but most of us don't spend on heating. Also, we can't change our floor plans without special permisses and licenses from the city witch are usually too expensive to even dream about. Love you
